Is this good as a main single router, or is it designed more for mesh use? I'm coming from an RT-AC68U with Merlin, but this looks like a good price.

  • It’s great as a single router. I run 2 in a mesh setup but when I needed to return one for a repair, 1 unit worked fine.

Is it better than rt-ax86u? This seems cheaper but with a higher model number.

86U has the better hardware apparently. But this is a great mesh router. Note this doesn't support Merlin firmware.

      • Thanks.

RT-AX92U is supported by the gnuton fork of Merlin.

Man this high model number is misleding Only 2x2 mimo for whats meant to be 'high end'.

They're fine routers, but why the premium moniker?

    • Tri band: 2x2 2.4GHz, 2x2 5Gz, 4x4 5GHz for AiMesh backhaul or unlocked for clients.

      • Very fair call, thats not bad.
Though, high end for users who will use said features; not as amazing for people who just have a 'single router' in the house.

        • Buy high-end when it's discounted ;)

It was high end when it was released in 2019.

      • No it wasn't. My AX88U was high end in Jan 2019, and it's higher spec than this in every way. 4x4 WiFi, 8 LAN ports, double the cores, double the RAM.

Only thing this has 'better' is tri-band, but that's moot when it's only 2x2.

ASUS model numbers have never made sense.

  • Have been tossing up between this and the TUF AX 5400 for $229 - https://amzn.asia/d/3FIKs2U. Or even just the Ax56u posted recently. Just want for a single router, good coverage, decent speed (not running any NAS, etc), not a big house.

  • I just bought the ax56u yesterday and was wondering these two would make a good mesh combo
We have a largish double storey L-shaped townhouse with solid brick walls and 6 people with about 30 devices
I was thinking this downstairs and the ax56u upstairs might be good
We are currety using Tenda Nova MW6 and they are struggling, we think due to so much brick and all our neighbours now work from home and stream at night and wifi analyzer shows a lot of competing signals

    • Should be okay, if not just Amazon return within 30days

  • Can this mesh with TP-Link Archer AX6000?

    • Short answer: no.

Long answer: Almost no hardware from different vendors work with another.
TP-Link seems to be the biggest supporter of EasyMesh, but even that is half-hearted, and that Archer doesn't support it.
I think Asus have some routers that support it, but I highly doubt they would enable it on such an old model.

      • Tis a very sad day…

  • OOS

  • Why all these routers going on special but no modems?
    Sigh…
