    Awesome deals, thanks again @beatthatflight!

Assuming your flight doesn't get cancelled

      Good luck…

      • Qantas is only 1.8% more reliable. At this price, I can book several flight Jetstar flights for cost of one Qantas flight 🤣

        • Jetstar are 34% more likely to cancel than the next worst…

          • @jv: Your understanding of statistics is all wrong.

Yes, if you flip 3 coins, and you need to get at least one heads, then you are more likely to receive at least one tails than if you had flipped one coin, but you're 3 times as likely to receive a heads, which is what matters.

Surely you can wrap your head around this one, @jv

            • @besttraveltech:

Your understanding of statistics is all wrong.

              I don't think so…

If one airline has 5% cancellations and the other 10% cancellations, You are twice as likely to get cancelled with the second airline, not 5% more….

              • +1

@jv: That's an inverse way of looking at statistics, especially reliability.

If you're asking how reliable Kia is vs Toyota, and 95% of Kias don't experience issues, while 90% of Toyotas don't experience issues, then the more accurate measure would be that Kia is ~6% more reliable than Toyota, not that Toyota is 100% more likely to experience issues. That's ridiculous.

I recommend the 1954 book How to Lie with Statistics, though if you have been granted a pen licence, then I'm assuming you may have already read it.

                • @besttraveltech:

                  How to Lie with Statistics,

Let me put is in a more basic way for you….

If there are 200 passengers flying today. 100 flying Jetstar and 100 flying Qantas.

If 5 Qantas passengers got cancelled and 10 Jetstar passengers got cancelled.

You are twice as likely to get cancelled with Jetstar…

                  • @jv: Let me put is in a more accurate way for you….

There are 14,869 flights in May 2023 between Qantas (8,516) and Jetstar (6,353).

If 213 Qantas flights and 267 Jetstar flights got cancelled…

Then you are 1.8% more likely to catch your flight with Qantas….

Gold Coast to Sydney - 18 July 2023

                    Jetstar from $29
                    Qantas from $295

You will pay 1000% of the price for 1.8% more reliability with Qantas.

Thank you again, @beatthatflight, for your posting these bargains despite having to put up with sooks like this.

                    • @besttraveltech: JV's analysis of the statistics here is spot on.

If there are 14,869 flights in May 2023 between Qantas (8,516) and Jetstar (6,353), and if 213 Qantas flights and 267 Jetstar flights got cancelled…

Then you have increased your risk of not going anywhere by 68%.

I remember looking at the stats last month - here are the published stats - Jetstar had an 8.1% cancellation rate which actually disguised an even worse cancellation rate on key city pairings, e.g. Melbourne-Sydney 13.3% cancellation, Melbourne-Brisbane 18.3%.

On the April numbers, looking at your Gold Coast-Sydney route, Jetstar cancelled 12.1% of flights, compared to 2.2% for Qantas. So if you were to book a Jetstar flight for April, the risk of it being cancelled was more than 5 times the same probability on Qantas. For every seven Jetstar flights with happy travellers on the route in April, there was one flight that didn't go ahead at all.

Whether passengers are prepared to take the risk of a cancellation for a saving of around $270 on the flight you've suggested is the calculated risk they take by flying Jetstar.

                      • @Ultrablue: Out of interest, should you take into consideration the difference in types of flying qantas does compared to jetstar?

Example. Qantas operates Gold Coast to Sydney / Sydney to good coast. The plane gets parked up for a few hours and the change staff

Jetstar operate Gold Coast to Sydney / Sydney to Melbourne / Melbourne to Sydney / Sydney to Gold Coast (so to speak) the plane is parked up for an hour and they change staff.

The odds of something going wrong on jetstar is much higher then qantas as the row is double on jetstar then qantas due to the nature of how they operate .

Would this then make qantas less risky or more risky or none of this affects it ?

                        • @letmethefuqin: Good question.

I think the operating model probably impacts why Jetstar are more prone to cancellations than other airlines.

I recall someone telling me that Jetstar doesn't have any staff based at their far flung destinations - i.e. they have limited 'hubs', compared to Qantas. So if something goes wrong at a city that doesn't have local crew, they need to either fly in replacement crew/plane or cancel the flight.

                      • @Ultrablue: As per the book I mentioned, Lying with Statistics, what JV says is technically true, but it's a completely inverse way of representing reliability. What people care about if how reliable each airline is objectively.

Like I pointed out with my car example, if 95% of new Kias don't experience a warranty claim, while 90% of Toyotas don't experience a warranty claim, it's true that there is a 100% difference in warranty claims, but that's a ridiculous way to think of things. There's only a 5% difference in pure reliability, and only a 6% difference in relative reliability.

And none of those accounts for 900-1000% difference in price in this case.

The fact is, Qantas is only 1.8% more reliable than Jetstar. You can try and spin the narrative however you want to make it appear like there's this huge difference, but the difference in objective reliability is only 1.8%, even if the difference in relative cancellations is 34%.

        • At this price, I can book several flight Jetstar flights

And increase your chance of cancellation even more !!!

          You must be a masochist.

  • +1

So flight tickets are cheap but airport parking isn't

    • airport parking is less likely to get cancelled though…

    • Correct.
