usually the processor with 't' on the end is alott worse than the normal non 't' processor if you do the comparisons.. but im just after more speed, even if its abit more power consumption… had a little old 't' processor nuc and it would throttle and fans would be super loud whenever trying to do intensive stuff… and in summer it would overheat and the computer would freeze.. but then again, that is a nuc, the airflow on those old ones are terrible.
SFF is also the perfect size without going full blown tower size and uses the least amount of power whilst utilising non 't' processor for max speed.. thats why i like SFF mainly in my own opinion.
just upgraded the office nuc to an i5 whatever SFF refurb and the difference is night and day.. and its super quite too which is awesome.
I agree here - a nuc or thin clients usually make major concessions for workability, cooling, upgradability (is that even a word? but thing soldered ram or hdd)
If you are after a bit more speed Im not sure 4th gen is the way to go
This deal is quite cheap but if it's not a good experience what's the point, Id pay the extra $100 for an 8th gen
Yea an optiplex with an i7 and windows on an m.2 will be fastest probably… can find refurbs with both. Windows on ssd will take longer to login etc and load things than with m.2. Feels more snappy. I've bought 5 refurbished optiplexes so I know. In the past 2 months
$23.60 delivery to Vic
Anyway i can game on this? What video card would i need to play reasonably modern games? been so long since i did pc stuff
I'm still using similar for the kids' games with a gt 1030. Plays plenty of games from Steam.
e.g. https://www.umart.com.au/product/asus-geforce-gt-1030-2gb-gd…
onboard gfx would handle windows solitaire, the older win95 one, maybe not the latest
Looks like a gen 1 pci expansion
https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/Optiplex-90…It won't handle the latest Solitaire? Looks like the new one is a bit more extreme… https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/888118474643317/
this will play RIMWORLD without any problems so you can war crime with piece of mind
heard of this game
These have tiny power supplies, no
This processor was released in 2013 and support discontinued in 2017.
Just don't.Even the e-waste centre would reject such equipment.
I wouldn't. I've scrapped a few of OptiPlex desktops in recent times for pocket money.
Interestingly the i3 variant was popular last year
Wrong. The processor was discontinued in 2017, however support continued until 2021.
My bad. We are, however, in 2023.
So what's wrong with that? You're not going to notice a difference in most tasks between this and a newer CPU.
@Mondorock: most people think they need the newest i5 or i7 with 16gb ram to facebook, and these people vote
@Sinnerator: U do need 16gb RAM - anything less far too low.
I have this PC, bought some years ago. Still goes alright. I did chuck a LP 1050 Ti and another 8gb of Hynix ram into it. I got these parts second hand, prob not worth doing in most cases, but it was fun.
It also can be configured with apple ios, which I did once for fun. Without delivery cost it isn't that bad of a machine.
AGreed the other i5 7500 deal was much better.
i still have one of these i bought a few years ago impulsively and never booted it up lol
if anyone wants it dm me
I have put a RTX A2000 in this.
I have been running one of these as a plex server 24/7 for the last 6 years, has been fine. It will struggle with any serious transcoding but can handle several simultaneous direct streams.
Only recently added a much more powerful server to handle all the 4k transcoding (the dell is still in operation with original content library).
For a simple plex setup i can recommend (you will need to add an extra data drive)
Keep in mind that you can buy thin clients with the same specs if not better for the same price, the same or better performance and lower power consumption.
The other day here, there was a Lenovo thin client, newer i5 4c/4t, 16GB, 246GB NVMe for just $133
Personally, I wouldn't buy this SFF anymore, just not worth unless you are looking for GPU expansion for those after Plex for example.
