How does it compare to the Breville Barista Express?

    • +2

The grinder is a "Push and hold" style grinder rather than a timed one. This means you have to make sure you're filling it to the right amount, and will need to change and remember this when you change beans.

You get used to it. I think at this price it's a good deal though, not at RRP.
I won mine in a work raffle.

As someone who owns both, the Breville is a lot better. My Sunbeam is currently sitting in a box.

      • +3

Downvoted for being one of the only people that knows what they're talking about.

        • +2

I think it's because the comment literally below says the same thing.

@Zondor: I've purchased both machines and have used both of them to make hundreds of coffees. Thanks for the upvote.

Search the previous post for this deal. I covered both machines. In summary, this machine has a proper 58mm portafilter (so should make a better coffee in the right hands). BES is easier to make a good coffee (53mm). Both have build issues/ seal issues. Breville have recently finally upgraded a known flaw. Both are relatively easy repairs.

    • I have both. The Sunbeam has a pretty bad flaw that makes it leak internally and lose pressure after about a year of use.

In terms of details, Breville Barista Express will be better

On the plus side, this is almost back to early 2020 pricing, I paid $369 in April 2020.

On the negative side, the machine barely lasted 2 years, started tripping the power every so often before giving up completely within 2.5years.

  • +1

Checking some reviews online, there's been plenty reports of leaks , particularly from the right side of this machine.

    YMMV.

    • I never had any leaking problem. I sold it after couple years for a Breville Barista Pro upgrade and within a year, the Breville already had issue.

      • +1

I think it's just luck of the draw with these things. My Breville had an issue early, which was fixed under warranty. My parent's Breville has gone 10 years and never skipped a beat. Still going strong.

    • +1

I had the right side leaking issue, but it's nearly a year still in the warranty, got a replacement with a new machine. The new one is working well so far.

Chiming in, got this pre-pandemic and still going strong getting used daily (2-4 cups per day for 4 years).
There's leak from the steam wand but that happens when the rubber seal gets old which is normal.
Complaints would be the steam wand is pretty weak, but still decent for frothing (provided you need to wait a bit longer).
Otherwise for this price its decent
If you can spend a bit more for Breville I would recommend doing that

  • Amazing value, under $400 for a machine with PID.

No doubt there are different kinds of PID controllers, some are more precise than others , the prosumer machines are charging a premium for the feature.

  • I bought one of these for around $400 in January. No complaints and no leaks (yet). There are better machines out there but not in this pricerange

Finally almost pre-pandemic pricing on this unit. Bought it for $349 wi th cashback.

Have owned it for about 2.5 years. As others have noted here's my quick take:

    1. makes a decent coffee with fresh beans if you devote some time to learn the process and enjoy the coffee-making process.
    2. Yes the Breville Barista Express is better but ~ $250 better, not sure of that.
    3. The steam wand has started leaking when the coffee shot is pulled, but haven't noticed a drop in shot quality -yet.
    4. You WILL need to descale the machine regularly and run the cleaning cycle like every other machine unless you want terrible tasting coffee.

In short, if you can stretch for the Breville do so, if not, this is a decent machine to pull some nice shots too.
    Hope it helps.

I've also had one of these for 2.5 years and had no issues and I can make a great coffee with it. Grinding directly into the portafilter can get messy so I weigh the beans for each shot, pour them into the grinder and then grind into a dosing cup which fits directly over the portafilter. Most of the time, I have the grinder set on 15. For a single shot I use 13 grams and a double I use 21. This generally gets a pretty decent coffee depending on your beans. I don't know if the Breville is better, but I'm very happy with my Sunbeam

  • Between this machine, the Breville barista express and the Breville bambino plus, is there a clear winner?

I've seen the Breville as low as $500 in the past, so I wouldn't mind waiting for the next sale if those are clearly better?

Never had a coffee machine and have no idea how to use them, but I love good coffee and if I can have it at home that would be great!

    • +1

Check out some youtube videos on these machines. All can make good coffee, but like all manual machines there is work involved. My advice is to weigh the beans for each shot so you get consistency.

    • +1

You will be happy with any. Bambino has a very quick heat time if that makes a difference. All can make very decent home coffees provided youvuse freshly roasted beans.

    • being able to grind your own beans does help produce better coffee than using pre ground coffee. If you are using pre ground coffee, get a machine that has pressurised baskets which are a bit more forgiving for pre ground coffee.

  • Does anyone know if this promo will continue until Prime Day?
Just wondered if it will be best to hold back to see if another coffee machine comes up in the prime day specials.
Also, is there any way to search for an item on Pre-Prime day promo (or on the day itself when it comes)?

  • Does it come with the assessories listed (or are they optional)?

ACCESSORIES : 58mm café size group handle, Café Tamper, SS 460ml Cafe Milk Jug, 2 x Single Floor filter baskets, cleaning pin, grinder brush

    • Mine came with these accessories

  • worth noting the other machines dont have the grinder, so thats going to add more costs

  • It has served me well for over 2.5 years.
