UPDATE 29 Aug — while the coupon code "WSAU2925" (15% off) no longer works, you can still use code "TELEVIP" to get 10% off which comes down to $1,121.40.

Credit to where credit is due — thanks to hachiroku who posted it in the forums. ThinkPad X1 Carbon — the "World's Lightest 14inch Business-Class Ultrabook" is $1,059.10 delivered with a bit of trick.

  • Go to ThinkPad X1 Carbon's page
  • Click on the middle option at $1719
  • Under Base, change
    • from "Intel HD 4000 Graphics in Intel Core i5-3427U Processor with 8GB 1333MHz DDR3L On Board"
    • to "Intel HD 4000 Graphics in Intel Core i5-3427U Processor with 4GB 1333MHz DDR3L On Board" [subtract AU$352.00] — which makes it $1246.00
  • Use coupon code WSAU2925 to bring down the total cost to $1059.10

What you get is this carbon fibre 14" ultrabook with:

  • Intel Core i5-3427U Processor
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
  • 14.0" Premium HD+ (1600x900) LED Backlit Display
  • 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3L
  • 128GB Solid State Drive
  • Integrated mobile broadband
  • Less than 1.4kg

The problem though, however, is that the RAM is soldered on so would not be possible to upgrade later (like most ultrabooks). And the step to downgrade from 8GB to 4GB to take away $352 — not sure whether it's a cart issue and how long would take Lenovo to patch it…

  • -1

Damn , I wanted to buy this but was confused last night. Only to come back in the morning to see it expired.

I called lenovo and they confirmed the 1121.40 price. But as an ozbargainer, I can't make up my mind to get it as i can see it was $62 cheaper last night.. Urgghh
Come on guys , find another coupon or something please !!

  • $1054 Done Deal !!

    • cant get 1054 :(

      • +4

        thats true.

        Can only get AU$1,054.13 :/

        • How? TELEVIP drops it to $1,121.40.

select the model in the middle.

during custmised, change 8G ram to 4G

at checkout use code : TELEVIP

          Give it a try.

        • Ahhh thanks, an education deal. Fortunately I'm buying it for an .edu.au .. I just don't know if all edu.au qualifies. I'll find out soon I guess. :)

  • How do they check if you were really eligable for the education deal price?

  • dammit, idk to get this or build a new computer for the same ammount of money, portability vs performance?

  • +1

lol haha, Our apologies, the page you're looking for can't be found. oh well

    • yeh getting that too damn
and the official site doesnt even list the middle model anymore

      • Who is the mole this time?

      • Hmm, it's still listed in both the regular and edu site for me.
edit: oh .. it's listed, but the link doesn't go anywhere!

  • Wonder if they will ship the current orders that were placed..

    • +2

They had an error last time and still honored the deal.

  • TELEVIP no longer works with edu.au site

  • +1

It looks like they've removed the middle option from the site entirely.

Looks like a "quick job". http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/ultrabooks/ << clicking on the picture of the ultrabook or the text: THINKPAD X1 CARBON will give you an error page.

    • So sad I couldn't get a 8GB ram lenovo X1 carbon in Australia

  • I ordered one with direct deposit and I am still thinking about going ahead with it. But I am nervous about the direct deposit for $1059. What if due to the unexpected high demand they can't supply for some time, then my money will be tied up.

    • +1

Your money will be refunded as they told me they are cancelling all orders as its a managers coupon code for staff discount and cannot be applied to a 2 day old model.

      • is this the Televip coupon code?
sad if its true :( was looking forward to this little laptop

        • I dont think its about the TELEVIP coupon code.

As this code was given by online sales rep when I talked to him online and ask for a discount then he asked me to try this code.

My only concern was the memory downgrade trick

Anyway I did not order one as at the first beginning my wife did not honor the purchase and asked me to finish the two barely new laptops at home first… :\

      • Seriously? Did you receive cancellation email or ?

  • The middle deal is back!

Removing 4 GB ram only save you $121 though

    • So it's true that it's a Lenovo stuff up with their cart configuration? We'll see whether they'll honour all the purchases.

      • I actually got a confirmation call yesterday regarding my order. She said i should be expecting received it around 3 weeks.

        • … thats weird got a confirmation phone call with id verification etc and told delivery by middle next week.

    • Is that still an error? It makes it cheaper than the base model but comes with a faster CPU and 3G

  • I received order cancellation email

    • called Lenovo post sale.

She said she canceled it by mistake and will fix it

however due to they still waiting for accessories from manufacturer my X1 will be delivered at end of Sep or begining of Oct

      • That's a relatively long extension, considering it doesn't sound like they are sure about it… It just makes me wonder more if I should give up and go back to the old desktop setup…

        • the website said ships in 2-3 weeks at the start, so it's only about one week extra.

    • Same here. Shame on you, Lenovo

      • Our orders are not cancelled just a mistake by operator and she will fix it

  • I just got the order cancellation.

  • I called Lenovo and spoke to someone about my order being cancelled.

I understand this can be taken the wrong way, and I mean no offence, but, I simply could not understand what she was saying.

From what I could gather, she said that because the X1 was a new product, they had to take action on it (?) and that triggered a cancellation.

She then said (I think) that the orders will be reactivated.

I'll call again tomorrow and see what's what.

The poor soul, though - why put someone who, for lack of a better phrase, can't speak English well, in an English call centre? She must get abused :(

    • She is not in a English call centre she is in China and she speak perfect Mandarin as good as her colleges.Don't worry about her

      • I understand she was in China, but put her on answering calls for English speaking countries?

Anyways, beside the point - let's hope the orders get reactivated.

I am puzzled - I ordered the docking station, and that is listed as 'Released to manufacturing' - I think they're still charging me for it even though the laptop is cancelled?!

  • My order got cancelled just now :( soooo sad

Update: lenovo call me back and said the order is still valid at 5:40pm.

  • +1

I just came back from a late meeting and the centre's now closed. I'll have to call tomorrow morning.

    • +1

check your email - > order status, if it is still there, the cancellation email was just a mistake.
That's what the lenovo staff told me. :)

      • When I click Order Status, it says Order Received. Yesterday, it said something like Released to Manufacturing. Maybe by going backwards in the process, it triggered a cancellation e-mail? I'll still call to check tomorrow anyway.

        • Called up this morning. It was just a system error. Order is still valid. The girl sounded like a robot when she spoke. Did she learn English or the FAQ answers using Microsoft Sam?

  • I hope so uccoffee I was looking forward to my new purchase :). My "order status" says "Released to Manufacturing" I guess that means it is still all Green :D

  • TELEVIP is no longer working (just in case someone wanted this in the 8Gb edition).

Good luck to everyone who was keen enough to place an order. I hope that deliveries begin soon.

  • Damn it! Missed it again. :( My X60 was dropped on a cement floor and not worth fixing. Hope it comes back soon!

  • Just received this.

"Your order is currently on hold. In order to proceed, you have the option to purchase the product at the correct price. Our sales specialist will be in contact with you in the next 2 business days to confirm."

Looks like they will not be honouring this offer.

  • Dear Customer

Thank you for your recent order.

We recently experienced a system error that prevented us from displaying the correct component price on our ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop, specifically the model with Intel Core i5-3427U processor when downgrading from 8GB memory to 4GB memory. This impacted your order.

Your order is currently on hold. In order to proceed, you have the option to purchase the product at the correct price. Our sales specialist will be in contact with you in the next 2 business days to confirm.

If Lenovo has reserved an authorised amount on your credit card, Lenovo will not process your credit card payment. If Lenovo has received your direct deposit, Lenovo will refund your direct deposit to your nominated bank account for the amount paid.

We apologise again for the inconvenience caused to you on this matter. We appreciate your understanding.

    Yours sincerely,

    • same here, damn it lenovo

      • why cant they just honor the order, it is NOT that cheap compare with oversea's lenovo X1 carbon price….

        • Has anyone tried to contact them yet? As this is a bizzare for them to do this? False advertising and as the product got sold out, they put the price up?

        • I'm awaiting a confident OzBargainer to contact them…

        • +1

          I will do that now…!!!

      • Yeah basically Lenovo has turned a good deal to "pricing error" :(

it is NOT that cheap compare with oversea's lenovo X1 carbon price

When you take away the GST, it actually IS that cheap comparing to X1C price in US.

        • compare with Hong kong / china price, NOT USA.

for AUD1750 , they have 3 years international warrenty, 256Gb SSD and windows 7 Pro X64.

      • I think we should contact them and report this to Fairtrading… Cheaper then US or not, it doesn't matter.
They took the money off my Credit Card and promised to deliver the product at that price. Does't matter if ot was a mistake or whatever. This is very low of Lenovo to do this…

        • how many get we get, I think around 10 people should be good enough to do ACCC & fairtrading. fairtrading is for each state thou, seems harder to get 10.

        • +2

Just got off the phone with them. They was $300 more to honour the sale at $1358. I have left my order as it is and told them that i will be contacting fair trading… Everyone who reads this… Please dont pay anything start an action on them by contacting fair trading. I am sure we can get more than 10 ppl here…

        • Please sign to this pos so that we know how many ppl are in for a fair trading report on them and we can do a combined action.

        • ok, i ll wait for them to call me to confirm this stupid pricing. I wont call them and waste my call credit and time.

        • But my credit card details have already been given to them (and authorised)? How do I not pay them and still have an order?

        • seems like at least 12 of us here if not using multiple accounts

There's got to be a way to make them honour the deal.

They debited our credit cards, etc. No?

    sadface

    • +1

On the e-mail it says they will not process the credit card transaction if you don't wish to continue. Maybe we can collectively contact them. People power! :P

  • Just got the same email :(

  • OMG i just got that email too! and im a student really needing this delivered urgently for my studies. how to fix this?

    • +3

The delivery wasn't going to happen until at least mid-September anyway. If you really need a laptop that urgently, I would advise to just go and buy instore.

  • Technically by not shipping the product they have the right to cancel the order "for any reason". I'm not sure how this would hold up, but it is super lame.

Lenovo accepts your order by 1) shipping the hardware product or making the software product available to you, or 2) providing the service. This email does not constitute Lenovo's acceptance of your order.

Lenovo reserves the right to refuse to sell a product to any customer for any reason, or to limit the number of units to a particular product that a customer may buy at any one time. If we do not accept your order we will notify you by phone or email; your credit card payment will not be processed or your direct deposit will be refunded.

    • Looks like they gonna win this time… lame.

  • Im keen for fair trading! They are also holding onto my money as well!

  • Pretty horrible business practice for not immediately refunding our credit cards when they noticed the error. That way we can choose to pay the extra 300.

It feels like a bait and switch since they took so long to fix the error and still enabled a second wave of student store/discount code to pass through.

    • Bait and Switch would imply dodgy business practices. I don't really think lenovo could orchestrate a move like this on purpose, or stoop that low.

This looks legitimately like a pricing error (multiplied by a discount code which shouldn't have worked on a 2 day old product) which they aren't honoring.

  • just got off the phone with lenovo, they are not going to honor it. I told them im going to take this to fairtrading, the salesman sounds like he doesn't give a shit.

  • AH! Bugger - I just cancelled my order.

    Good luck, folks.

    • Hopefully all of my contact details are out of date and they can't call to cancel mine!

I am totally shocked after checking how much these $%^# selling in HK. Maybe Australian prices are not that bad….

    http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/hkweb/Leno…

    • +1

you dont buy from their website in HK.
Check price.com.hk , which is like ozbargain for hong kong.

  • Lenovo is still holding my money in credit card.

What can they lose selling to us at 1000.

Our money is as good as American's

    • It's actually better :P

  • Hi, i have already lodged a complaint with ACCC as well as with Fair Trading. I believe they mislead us by showing the incorrect price though whatever the reason was, its their responsibility to display correct price. ACCC has all the confitions listed on their website which also states that it applies to advertising on public media (country wide) such as INTERNET sale. I would suggest everyone to lodge a general complaint to ACCC and Fair Trading and hopefully we will win as our purchase was legit and they should honour it. Also note that they WERE actually selling them knowingly as i did chat with the online sales team and their rep told me the prices himself with all discounts. Please update here as soon as u receive a call…

    • Good job mate, keep update please

    • they got my net order, CALL me up again to ask for credit card, then CALL me again to said the deal/order is still valid before they EMAIL me to say incorrect pricing.

I havent got the cancellation phone call, so i ll wait before accc

  • I missed a Private call today at around 12:30. Not sure if it was from Lenovo. Given uccoffee's account of the checks that were done with real people, this does give more justification to the case, if we were to go ACCC and/or Fair Trading.

    • There's a very good chance it was Lenovo. I received the same call at around the same time from a private number.

      • You missed it as well, or do you screen calls?

        • done my complain to ACCC.

    Reply from ACCC below:

"Thank you for your email of 31 August to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regarding your dispute with Lenovo Australia. Your reference number for this matter is 346301.

The ACCC is responsible for administering the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 which incorporates the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) in Schedule 2 of that Act. The ACL is a single national law which aims to protect consumers and ensure fair trading in Australia.  Under the ACL, consumers have the same protections, and businesses have the same obligations and responsibilities across Australia.

The ACL provides a range of provisions that protect consumers when they purchase goods or services. Under section 47 of the ACL a supplier who displays the same item with more than one price – ‘multiple pricing’ – must sell it for the lowest displayed price or withdraw the goods from sale until the price is corrected. This applies regardless of where the price is displayed – for example, in a catalogue, online or in a television advertisement. The ‘displayed price’ is a price attached to the goods or advertised in a catalogue.

The conduct that you describe risks breaching section 47 of the ACL. For this reason I have lodged details of your complaint in our national database. As the ACCC does not comment on matters we may or may not be investigating, we are unable to provide further details regarding what, if any, action we may or may not take in relation to the concerns you have raised. Please note that the ACCC will only contact you again in relation to your complaint if we require further information or evidence to assist in our enquiries.

While all complaints are carefully considered, the ACCC must exercise its discretion to direct resources to the investigation and resolution of matters that provide the greatest overall benefit for consumers and businesses. The ACCC’s Compliance and Enforcement policy describes in more detail how this discretion is exercised. This policy, which is available on the ACCC’s website [www.accc.gov.au], lists a number of factors that are weighed including whether conduct raises national or international issues, involves significant consumer detriment or a blatant disregard of the law.

The details of your complaint will be used in the context of the ACCC’s ongoing monitoring to determine whether there is a pattern of behaviour by Lenovo or a pattern within the industry that may raise broader concerns.

If you wish to pursue a remedy for loss or damages as a result of prohibited conduct, you should first attempt to negotiate this remedy with Lenovo. If you are unable to resolve this matter with Lenovo through either verbal or written communications, you may wish to contact NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20.

Local fair trading or consumer affairs agencies are best placed to assist with localised or individual disputes and can suggest a range of strategies that you may wish to explore to resolve your concerns. They can also provide information on how to make a claim through the small claims court or tribunal should this become necessary.

It must be emphasised that, ultimately, it is a matter for the Courts to determine whether the alleged conduct breaches the ACL and a private right of action is available to anyone who suffers loss or damage as a consequence of a contravention of this legislation. In any event, your private rights of action will not be affected should the ACCC pursue this matter.

Please note that your matter is important to the ACCC as it assists in determining whether issues with national or wider public interest implications exist. The ACCC closely studies the patterns of complaints that it receives to ensure that its enforcement and education actions are focused on the areas of greatest concern to Australian consumers.

Thank you for contacting the ACCC and I hope that the above information is of some assistance."

  • So, I'm interested in the practicalities of this.

Those who have a lodged complaint to the ACCC, how have you paid? Did you pay by credit card? If so, have you been charged? Do you expect to be "out of pocket" for now despite not knowing whether we will receive this product or not?

From the ACCC reply above, it looks like we could have better luck going to Fair Trading, but that is localised. I'm in VIC. However, ACCC said they will look into the "pattern", so time to write a letter! If someone has one drafted up already that I can use as a base, that will expedite my complaint lodgement ;)

I have not had a call from Lenovo yet, but I did miss a Private number yesterday around noon.

    • I do not thing we will get anything out of this, probably just a few warning for lenovo. So, please just complain. It is for the next generations. :D

  • Just received another Cancellation e-mail.

  • +1

Letter i wrote to ACCC and Fair Trading - i would really appreciate if we all make complaint to prove the pattern.

"I made a purchase on the Lenovo Online Sales website for the Lenovo X1 Carbon on 28/08/2012. The specific model i purchased costed $1059.10 and I made the payment through my Credit Card upfront. After making the payment I received an order confirmation email with order number and delivery date. Today I have received another email from Lenovo saying that they will not honour the sale due to a pricing error on their website and I will have to pay extra $298.90 for them to supply me with the product. At the time I made the purchase and supplied them with my Credit Card details, the money was already deducted from my account and now they won't honour the sale just because there was a pricing error on their website. I believe this is false advertising and the pricing on their website was misleading. As the transaction has already been processed and I have already made the payment, they should honour this sale."

I really believe this now that lenovo sold out of this product so they think ok we should jack the price and ask ppl to pay more… Sorry lenovo but i will never buy another lenovo product… They have turned out to be the lowest in their business practices… Shame!!!

    • Thanks Umar511986 for championing the cause. I will use your letter as a base and I will make a complaint.
