In this film Donnie Yen plays a kung-fu (wing-chun) hacker, a bit like how Neo learns kung-fu in the Matrix. A historical film following the development of the TCP/IP protocol.

A more modernist reading of the film in the context of recent events has revelead a subtle subtext challenging the role of intellectual property in a world with high speed internet and instant communication.

Rated 8.1 on imdb, won 8 awards. Fun even if you don't speak the language (which I don't)

    Where is IP Man 2?

  • Excellent movie - probably one of the best Hong Kong Kung Fu movies since the 90's… though this might be Region A only.

    • Says under description:

      Region: All Regions

      • I didn't see that, I went straight to Asian Blu-ray Guide:

        http://www.asianblurayguide.com/index.php

Where it's listed as Region A? It then also has a link to the item on yesasia.com where it lists it as Region A only.

WTF is up with your description of the movie?
    Think I'm missing a joke.
Also the movie is showing up as $18.75 USD.

Have you linked to the right movie?

    • Yeah, on the right hand side of the page there's a button to buy it from Amazon directly for $7.88

      • Sorry, missed that. Thanks!

Pretty good deal, waiting for 3rd instalment of Ip Man

    • Interesting, I thought Donnie Yen said he wasn't going to a third movie, but looking on the internet it seems he changed his mind and it might come out next year! There was also this movie which was trying to bank in on the name, but was a rather average movie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_Is_Born_–_Ip_Man

      • these people never learn from hollywood…

always stop at the second installment… because the 3rd one tend to go down badly.

they should stir the plot into a new tangent and do a ichi-okoto instead :P

        • There are plenty of examples to show the opposite, too.

  • Great movie, the second one is equally as good.

    我要打十個!

    • "I want to fight with 10 of them!"

      Kick-ass…….

  • Amazing movie.. I already have it but worth buying if you don't.

  • Great Movie.

Makes me want to build a Wooden Man just to break out some Fu.

  • Ip Man 2 was on SBS a few weeks ago. I caught most of it. The story reminds me of Rocky 4 (the one with Ivan Drago in it). Good movie though. Havent watched part 1 but definitely will soon.

  • Great movie. Another must have is fearless

    Awesome movie.

On a side note, for a bit a LOL in the office with the recent clash between Apple & Sammy

I.P MAN = Intellectual Property Madness and Nonsense

Killer moves = bounce back kick, rectangular and round shaped fist punch

Ultimate Killer move = 100 Billion cents crushing weight

    feel free to add more

    • If only that made sense……if only.

    ^ What?

  • Together with Spiderman, Superman…Ipman should be recruited as one of the Marvel Heroes :)

    • +4

Last I checked, Superman was DC.

  • i really love this movie, but i think i'll make do with a high quality rip until i can get it for under $10…(my mental barrier for buying blu-rays!)

man, i want free shipping back! my blu-ray collection exploded during those times!!!

    eye pee man

  • Ip Man != IP Man

His name is Ip Man (not man as in male in english)
Lots of people say it I P Man :)

    • read: eep man

      • According to some of the crappy HK DVD subtitles I've seen, it's translated as "Leaf Ask". =3

    • Yeah I'm chinese, I'm just screwing around.

      • +1

lol. i do "IPv4 man" instead… nerd joke.

        • they should have learnt from hollywood and stopped at IPv2!!! ;)

"I want to fight with 4,294,967,296 of them!"

          Wait until IPv6 Man comes…

    • Yes that annoys me too when peopel refer to him as I. P. Man. He is not an intellectual property man!!

      • Inflamed Prostate Man?

Pronounced eep mon with how you say mon in jamaica

    • +3

Some english word are bit inconsistent.

      Like how to pronounce Nikon
It should be Neeh Kon (Japan), but more popular with Nai - Kon
In US, those yanks call Ai-raq and Ai-ran, also Ai-pod BUT!!! not Ai-talian ?????

      • it's not inconsistent, it's accent. (though many english speakers refuse to admit it.)

case in point: subaru. it's called 'sue-boo-roo' in this country…

too-meh-toe, too-mah-toe… same thing, depending which side of the world you are in.

I believe, Nai-kon came from Nai-kee (nike), thus the 'Nai'.

i guess the japanese aren't too fussy about how people call their brands as long as they buy them. ;)

but you try to pull this with the french… oh my. You'd probably get an earful. :P —- "it's qua-sonn you uncivilised brute! " (croissant)

  • Should have called the movie Master Ip

  • I noticed that the entire Ip Man series advances an almost militant line of Chinese nationalism against "foreign invaders" throughout the movie length and then tries to pull it back at the end of the movie by saying "Ok…moving forward".

    • You "noticed"? Dude, the films were practically screaming patriotic nationalistic propaganda (maybe too strong a word, but you get the idea). Which is not to say the films themselves are bad (they're fantastically entertaining), but you have to be able to swallow the pro-Chinese views of the creators.

BTW for those who have seen the film, did you know notice in both films:
      Antagonist comes in
Ipman's rival kung-fu master gets beat down
      Ipman takes up the mantle
      Ipman beats up foreign menice

Not very original, but I guess it works. When I watched the second film in the cinema, the audience (mostly Chiense) were clapping and cheering when Ipman defeats the baddy. Which I guess was a bit awkward for the few Aussies sitting in the corner ;]

      • I thought the director did a very good job.

patriotic nationalistic = yes, propaganda? No. But certainly the film is more than that.

Pay attention of the mindset of the Japanese challenger. He wanted a fair fight with proper honour because he saw how well IpMan did against 10 opponents. It was the jap assistant who is extremely arrogant and abusive. That led of a lot of rage built up among the civilians/refugees. So Ip Man who was on a mission of revenging the Japanese invaders came and show the Japs about REAL kungfu. In many ways, it was justice from the Chinese point of view. But it created even more tension and violence.

Then, in Ip Man 2, we really see a true master: one with proper wisdom.

      • Not really, there's that part with the Northern chinese against the southern chinesel

      welcome to chinese cinema…

  • I am big fan of Donnie Yen. I think the best fighting scenes that I have ever seen was in Flash Point. Worth having a look if you like this genre.

    • i don't remember if i've seen flash point…will have to check it out again…

donnie yen vs jacky/jing wu in Killzone/Sha Po Lang was pretty awesome!

    • I like the other movie he did with sammo hung and he flips him over the bar. One of the most outrageous kung fu moveive ever seen.

      • I believe you mean killzon /spl, the one I mentioned above.
