  • Thanks for the tip. :)

  • It was $700 last week

    • I went in to Harvey Norman at Moore Park a week ago simply asking whether they had any. They didn't, but the guy immediately said he'd order one in for me for $550. Although I know they were overpriced at $700, I was amazed how quickly he dropped the price without me even asking.

  • Only $5.95 shipping (Syd metro).

  • It doesn't have quad record which is a pretty handy feature, also not sure if it has "skip" - however, if you are after a very easy/user friendly PVR it's good for that.

    • Doesn't have ad skip, just a simple fast forward on the remote with different speeds. However, I think they've programmed it really well - when you hit play after fast forwarding it skips back X seconds/milliseconds depending on what speed you're fast forwarding at. The reaction timing means that most times I would end up right at the end of the ad break just in time for the show to start again. I had a Topfield before my TiVo with ad skip and I think I preferred the TiVo's fast forwarding. It was more accurate (for me).

+1 Quad recording and ad-skip are hard to live without.

Grab something like a Topfield 24xx, with better hardware and a lower price. You can record up to 4 channels from 2 muxs at once. You get the broadcast EPG which you can update as often as you feel the need to, so it's 99.9% accurate. You get TAPs (user installed apps), so you can auto-schedule recordings and create season passes (though series link recording is built in anyway). You can transfer recordings to and from it without any restrictions, via USB or Ethernet. You can use it as a networked media player and the higher end models come with Internet connectivity/apps and DLNA.

What you don't get is a PVR that removes or misses recordings all the time, for no apparent reason.

      • Hi Bazza. I'm still deciding between models but the TAPs do sound interesting and sound like they will help if I get a Topfield. Can you let me know which TAPs you use to auto-schedule recordings and create season passes? Any other TAPs that you can't live without?
        Thanks.

I loved my TiVo for the brief (18 months) time I had with it before it blew up. I've had foxtel since, but I've been wanting to cancel that for a while now. I would love to get another TiVo. I just hope Hybrid don't go under. I think there was a recent comment by a Hybrid rep in the TiVo Whirlpool thread saying something like the TV guide would be supported for years to come even if they went under.

    • Given that their EPG is so inaccurate, that's cold comfort.

      • I never found it an issue. I've been without a TiVo for the last 12 months so I can't comment on that period though.

  • It should have been this price and have this much capacity from the start to get some decent market share.

    • Yes, if they'd done that (even a 500Gb) 3-4 years ago (instead of the piddly 160Gb), with the money they were throwing at promoting the thing they'd dominate the market. Trying to get big sales numbers in a market new to PVR's priced over $600 was never going to happen.

  • I would have jumped on this in a second in the days before netflix, hulu and bbc player.

Now days i never watch normal tv, cause got so many things qued up online, i still cant believe i missed the olympics, didn't watch even 10 minutes of any event!

    • Any Bargrin VPN's for those purposes?

      • unblockus is the best service I have found for netflix. Transparent, fast non VPN solution.

        • Yeah thats what i got

  • This is the best price yet. Got mine for $555 a few months back from HN.

The season pass is handy for recording full season shows.

Tivo genie is handy for recording from your smartphone and computer.

Only the US has the quad tuner model but requires you to subscribe.

  • What are some alternatives to tivo, there must be a competior out there doing same thing for cheaper ?

What about icetv and the boxes they sell?

Factor in the cost of IceTV subscriptions over the life of the device in your calculation.

  • BeyondWiz DP-2P was $238 last week on OzBargains (Normally $399-$459)
does heaps more than this Australian "restricted" TIVO.

    • +1

      does heaps more

      such as?

        1. AV-in
        2. Can transfer recordings to PC.
        • The TiVo can transfer recordings to PC with an optional purchase of the Home Networking Package (RRP $99, although Hybrid have let this go for as little as $5 in the past).

I've bought 4 Tivos in the last 5 years - had 2 then lost them in the divorce so bought another two.

They are very easy to use and they are very reliable.

The only complaint I have is that they have no AV input - if they did you could record external sources such as Foxtel with them.

The thing I'd say about Tivo is it just works out of the box - no fiddling around with IceTV or any of that stuff that is required with most other PVRs…

  • Recently bargained JB Hi-Fi down to $429 for my Topfield 2400 Masterpiece; much better unit, allows me to record Foxtel…TiVo's local support has all but diminished sadly.

    • A better unit (except the remote). Only if you really want the series record (without paying for IceTV) would I recomend Tivo.

  • Been looking for a second TiVo for a while, perhaps this 320gb model will come down under $400 now?

    http://www.eljo.com.au/audio-visual/categories/video-recorde…

    • If you checkout Ebay they come up from time to time - I picked up an unused, unopened unit for $250 buy it now about 6 months ago…

  • Good price for the 1TB Tivo.

Note that TiVo requires connection to the internet in order to access the electronic program guide.

Dick Smith sell the TiVo WiFi connector for $49.95 - so if you need this then try to barter Harvey Norman down to throw one in for a total package price of anywhere below $550 and you will save having to source one from Dick Smith.

An alternative for tech-minded would be a "wireless client bridge ethernet router" and cheapest option for this is to istall "dd-wrt" into any the compatible wifi router. Reason I want to do this rather than just add the wifi dongle is so I can also connect a media streaming device into the dd-wrt so that I can watch ABC-TV iView on my larger TV plus other catchup channels. I have a Blue-Ray player Sony BDP-S185 that has iView and nother programs built in. THus, given I want to stream video from the web, I will look for a faster "802.11n" router rather than "802.11b" or "802.11g".

I would avoid "WDS" wifi 'bridging' solutions because, although they may offer a somewhat simpler set-up, they will slow down your wifi network and they require that both ends of the wireless connection be wds capable.

I'm new to the world of dd-wrt - so very pleased to stand corrected if I hold false assumptions, or if I have any of this wrong…
