Yeah the gold was still $350 when the silver went on sale, I wanted this colour as a gift i would be getting the pro personally or even waiting to see what watch 6 offers.
Not sure W6 will be 40% better to justify the upgrade.
Samsung Pay on Galaxy Watch is overrated. I no longer user it. If you take the watch off you need to put in a pin code which is a pain to draw. Plus if you use more than one Galaxy Watch… you can only have Pay set up on one watch. Not a huge selling benefit for me.

I like it, i only put the pin# in once then it works without for a while (not sure how long).

Why not use google pay?
Just used to Samsung pay i suppose as GP wasnt available on the watch 3. It is well implemented so no reason to change.
I wish that I could use Google Pay. My credit card (Coles) only supports Apple and Samsung. It's been that way since 2016.
You can use Google Pay with Watch 4/Watch 5..
I have it on my Samsung Watch 4 because I have one card that's google pay only and another that's samsung pay only.
You just need to download the Wallet app on your Samsung Watch 4/5

I get 2 days from watch 3 but i dont use the always on display.
Watch 5 takes 75 minutes to charge so not a big issue really.

Yeah a good choice if you dont use all the features os a samsung watch.
Picked up one about a month ago for a bit less. My first smart watch and it's not bad. Great for fitness tracking if you're looking to be more active. Beyond that, it doesn't offer me anything my phone can't manage. In short, should you buy a smart watch just because? Nah, probably not.

can anyone tell me when you pair the LTE model watch with a samsung phone … can it make and receive calls and messages if you leave the phone at home? can I use my current mob number? and will it work with a S8+ or do I need to upgrade my ph too?
All you need is an esim, an electronic sim for the watch and you can do it. Your phone is fine.
You end up paying for 2 sims though (1 in phone and 1 esim for the watch).
