What's Your Dream Watch?

I've long been a fan of Longines watches. Other watch makers have their own fans but my heart belongs to the Winged Hourglass. Specifically, I want to own the Ultra Chron - I don't know what it is but this timepiece just speaks to me. It's surprisingly affordable, too, considering it's a high-end Swiss brand, so there's actually hope I may get to own one at some point. If I had to aim lower then the next best would be the Master Collection L2.909.4.78.3, which is such a handsome watch in my eyes.

What's your favourite? Let's see what OzBargainers would buy if money wasn't an object and they didn't have to worry if it was on sale or not (although, that's still a nice idea…)

    • Very nice! Fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet plus motif dial.

Casio F-91w, still the best watch you can buy, MVP that just works properly. Mine was 'acquired' by a sticky fingered bogan in the change rooms, who steals a $10 watch!?!

    • Sticky fingered bogans, that's who!

  • +5

Probably a Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 in pink gold even though I would never wear it with my lifestyle lol. I just love the design.

I recently picked up a Vacheron Constantin Overseas black dial which I waited two years for and really wanted. I can tell you after getting it that it is just a watch and your life won't change. You can jerk yourself off over how great the workmanship, history and all the other crap is but at the end of the day it's still just a piece of man jewellery lol. I think the thrill comes from wanting something and the anticipation of getting it, once it's on your wrist the excitement doesn't normally last. Also, nobody cares or notices what watch you wear unless you are wearing some gaudy, iced out monstrosity.

I wear my Seiko SPB143J as a daily and love it.

    • While what you say is true. I do appreciate workmanship and history.
I wouldn't wear a watch for others but for myself. And the overseas is really nice but if be happy with patrimony or traditionelle . As they both have a history behind them

  • Breitling Navitimer which I have so I'm happy. Trying to build up my collection!

  • +3

    F-91W
    Accept no substitute.

  • A good flieger, mainly Stowa or even Laco. Not the most expensive but still more than I would ever spend on a watch.

  • If I was going to buy another watch I would definitely consider
    https://www.swatch.com/en-au/mission-to-uranus-so33l100/SO33…
So many lines possible with this….l

  • Breitling Navitimer 41cm black and white.

Wish they somehow magically make it more water resistant though!

  • I was thankful enough to buy my dream watch - Cartier Tank Basculante mecanique for my 25th birthday.

If I had stupid money though - I would buy a PP Calatrava in Rose Gold or one of their perpetual calendars

  • Unobtanium: Richard Lange Minute Repeater

Maybe one day: JLC Ultra thin Moonphase

I have legitimately been on the hunt for a Sub ripoff/fake, but has to have "LOLEX" as the brand…

  • G-SHOCK MUDMASTER GWG2000-1A5 & Dreamcast watch.

Can't justify it. Have too many watches.

  • I got a Longines spirit titanium 40mm as an early 40th birthday present about a week ago. I'm still firmly in the honeymoon period and absolutely love it at the moment! My earlier watches have been seikos so it feels like a big step up.

  • Rolex Sky-Dweller!

Also, my recollection of the evolution of dream watches since I was about 20 has been:

    1. IWC Portugueser
    2. JLC Ultra Thin Master Perpetual
    3. Rolex Daytona
    4. Patek Annual Calendar
    5. Rolex Sky-Dweller

The model colour and config changes.

Very happy to say I own my Dwelly and it a very nice daily driver and travelling watch. I don't have much desire to get another piece now. Although I do like buying fun watches too, like the Moonswatch or other cool swatches (alternate the SD with these!)

Perhaps a Daytona, or maybe I'll wait for that same feeling I had when I saw the IWC Portugueser on my colleagues wrist all those years ago!

    • Jesus that's a collection

  • Retro rip curl blue analogue. Steve Irwin used to wear one. A true classic. https://imgur.com/a/Ca6Orbm

    • RIP Steve

    • Interesting choices and thanks for the links. I find every one of those watches fugly as hell though lol.

  • Let's see what OzBargainers would buy if money wasn't an object and they didn't have to worry if it was on sale or not

Apple watch, standard size and standard band.

    ——

Other watches seem rather fashion statements than for function which I don’t really care even if $ isn’t a problem.

'Attainable' dream watch is a simple Explorer 36mm ref: 124270.. honestly if I ever get the chance to buy this retail, I'd be satisfied for this to be my one and only watch.

As for aspirational dream watch.. honestly I never really thought about it, flavour of the month really.. Would love those typical popular ones.. like a Royal Oak, Daytona, Patek Annual Calendar, Sky Dweller.. etc but something thats grown on me a lot recently is the VC overseas.

    • From the trinity VC gets the least love but imo is the nicest of them as it's more traditional in design

  • casio
    with the calculator

  • +2

    AP Royal Oak

  • A smart watch I didn't need to charge would be mine.

  • My dream watch is the Breitling Navitimer https://www.breitling.com/au-en/watches/navitimer/navitimer-… . So I bought it around 10 years ago and it sits in a draw full other unused stuff.

    • Why not wear it? It is not a personal favourite of mine but it is handsome enough looking watch.

      • I still like to look at it once or twice a year, just find wearing a watch uncomfortable in Brisbane's humid weather. Once I got used to going without I couldn't put it back on… also the steel band always pulled at my arm hair too. Previous watch had a leather band which would soak up the sweat but was quite comfortable to wear.

    Omega Worldtimer
    Brietling B01 Navitimer Ice Blue
    Chopard Alpine Eagle
    Grand Seiko Skyflake

    • Chopard Alpine Eagle

Always liked the Mille Miglia range

  • I don't wear/need jewellery.

    • But do you want jewellery?

      • As investment yes, but I don't stick them on my body when they serve no real purpose anymore.

  • I’d love a NTTD seamaster.

  • +1

First was a Seiko SKX007j, which I now own.

Then a blue Tudor Pelagos, which I now own.

Now I want a Tudor Pelagos fxd.

    Eventually a Snoopy Speedy.

    • When did you buy the SKX? I bought my SKX007K in 2015. I was shocked when I found out Seiko was going to stop making them.

They have gone up in value now.

  • -1

Seiko vh31, sweeping quartz, 42mm to 44mm size, 22mm strap, sapphire with a nice blue/green/red dial, no complications and some good lume.

I can find everything so far except the coloured dial in a big size (I can find big black dial or a small coloured one).

  • Stowa Antea is my pick. I have the 390 and it's the perfect Bauhaus dress watch. Great value for money.

  • Got gifted a longines. Wore it less than 10 times and sold it within 5 years.

  • Rolex Daytona Platinum (Ref 126506-002) for me https://www.rolex.com/en-us/watches/cosmograph-daytona/m1265…
Rolex Daytona Rainbow (Ref 116595RBOW) for my wife https://www.chrono24.com.au/rolex/rolex-daytona-rainbow-blac…

  • Seiko railway pocket fob SVBR003 - https://japan-select.com/products/seiko-rail-road-pocket-wat…
The black cotton rope fob I actually prefer to a chain and would be more manageable for daily use

    • +1

That Seiko is actually quite a handsome watch. I’m really attracted to how legible it would be.

      • +1

Yes, largely unchanged since the 1929 original. They have a reassuring heft to them. I can't really explain it but it feels more visceral to actually hold time in your hand. Memento mori and all that.

  • I love watches from Parmigiani Fleurier. Not a brand that is well known yet, but wow they are starting to make some great look watches. If money was no object, then I'll have a Tonda Chronor Rose Gold please!!

  • +2

I've always wanted a Panerai Luminor.
A bit more gawdy than before but I love them

  • Patek 5711/A or 5811/G.

  • Fenix8

  • A Piaget Altiplano thinnest watch in the world.

  • I am about to buy longines hydroconquest
But my holy grail is rolex gmt master ii (batman).

  • My dream watch would be a mobile phone which can have its time/ watch function ON even when it's out of battery.. may be solar driven, like the good old Casio watches. I have been rarely wearing wrist watches for many years now.

  • Buzz Aldrins missing Speedmaster

  • +1

Already have my dream watch, a Casio Men's Vintage CA53W-1 Calculator Watch

  • Mine is this one from Jacob&Co.

Sadly I only see that in dreams. When I wake up I dont remember about that watch So unfortunately cannot tell what watch it is

  • +1

Grand Seiko SLGH005 or if I had more money than sense - Rolex Daytona ;)

    • That Grand Seiko is amazing!

  • for me
either a Sinn U1 or a Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 68 Extreme or a Pelagos FXD.

    To impress
    GS SBGH273

  • Any vintage omega.

  • I'd say a movado

  • F91W

  • Invicta and the Perrelet Turbine Erotic (Swiss)
    /s

    • That thing just looks like a Thargoid

  • A Cartier Crash

  • Breitling Superocean Heritage II. Wife got it for me for our wedding. One and only watch I’ll ever need.

    • That’s a great story. It’s really nice to see it has so much more meaning than just an object to admire.

  • Rolex Submariner Starbucks or Omega Speedmaster Snoopy

  • Rolex Explorer or maybe something from Grand Seiko.
Dream dream - something with a Tourbillion - maybe a Jacob & Co. Astronomia

  • Anything from A. Lange & Söhne but if I had to choose would be the tourbillon. Sadly there cheapest models start at the mid 30’s 😔

    https://www.watchswiss.com/brands/a-lange-sohne/richard-lang…

    • A tourbillon from a Lange and sohne for $30ish K not a chance More like 200k. But if meaning base models. Then yeah they are the German version of the holy trinity

      • +1

Yep, worded that confusingly. Basically can’t afford 30k let alone 300k for a tourbillon.

  • So it depends if it's something we can realistically afford or not.
Unrealistic is Vacheron Constantin Les cabinotiers this is a $2 million dollar watch https://www.vacheron-constantin.com/dam/ric-import/vac/aeba/…
Realistic probably Rolex GMT master 2 Pepsi. I would really like a Vacheron but they are all on the too high side. Cheapest watch I'm interested in is $36k

  • Omega Speedy man on the moon. Should of gotten it like 10yrs ago when it's was like 2.5 k new

Guess I'll just get a poor mans Swatch Speedmaster…cheap plastic fantastic

  • I have a small wrist and it hurts whenever I wear a watch so my dream man's watch is something that is small and light.

  • Dream watches that are possible:
-Tissot PRX powermatic. These are so great for the price, only issue is I can't decide on the colour still.
-Seiko Presage Limited Edition Matcha. Crazy cool for the price. Beautiful auto caseback, great strap, 10/10 dail (looks nuts in the sun). I got this for myself but rarely wore it due to size. My gf took a liking to it and now wears it most days, looks so much better on her. If you have tan or brown skin and small wrists you should definitely buy this.
-JLC MUT moon. I genuinely think this is the perfect men's dress watch. Arguably should be in the unjustifiable category due to price but since getting it I've never encountered a realistic watch I'd rather wear with a suit.
-Seiko Arabic Dial 5 SNK063J5. Love the arabic text and red Friday change from the usual Sunday. I've been trying to get one of these for a couple years now but can never find a reasonable price. Can't justify 500+ for it yet on principle. Searched around when I was in iraq, yemen, egypt etc and even they didn't have them :(

    Possible but can't quite justify:
-Rolex Rootbeer/Hulk. I hate everything about Rolex, which makes be even more annoyed that these are still two of the most aesthetic watches I've ever seen. I got a high quality rep of the hulk and it's so beautiful. Such a shame about the brand.
-Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake Viridian. I planned to buy one as an investment but chickened out, really should have. I'm certain this brand will continue to succeed. Love their casebacks even more, the phaaatt rotor is so cool.
-Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. I saw these drop into the 30k's which would have been a great deal/investment. Current prices are unjustifiable though. The reflective gold case back door is so damn beautiful.

    Money No Object:
-Rotonde de Cartier Mysterious Hour Skeleton. Love the simple but brilliant engineering in this, that's the whole point of watches right? 75k last time I checked though, bit much for a novelty..
-AP Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar 26579CB. One of the only full white ceramic watches. Always been in love with it but half a mil its crazy.
-RM055, very guilty pleasure, but it was the first heavy hitter I ever liked before getting into watches. Looks so cool but could never respect someone who's paid the price tag for it.
-Rose (sedna) gold speed master. The case back is sex. Not auto though.
-Anything from Lange and Heyne they look great and love the company history for personal reasons. Prices are absurd though.
-Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5650G Advanced Research. Similar to the Rolex in that they are so hyped the price is ludicrous, but the aesthetics are undeniable.

  • Really impressed with the watches you ozbargainers have!!

  • For those of you into ultra high end luxury marques (VC, AP, JLC, Patek etc.) - just curious to know, are you into them for their craftsmanship, or for what they represent? It could just be my ignorance, but according to my reasoning, unless someone's able to strip down and reassemble the watch (or at least the theoretical knowledge), they won't have the requisite appreciation for its mechanical intricacies and I do wonder whether they're just in it for the cachet.

Having said that, my own watch is $600 and lots of others here are equally happy with cheaper Casio's, so I suppose what's considered a reasonable purchase would lie at different points along a continuum for different people…

    • +1

when you are too rich and afford a luxury watch, you just buy it. regardless of you are a classy person or an illiterate drug dealer.

    • +1

Who here goes five-figures on a watch? This is Ozbargain!
Oh wait, think I have a candidate.

There's some Frasier dialogue about a Milanese cobbler that's along similar lines. Others like driving something much fancier than anyone would need.
Comes down to personal choice, needing to park money somewhere and a pinch of insecurity I'd say.

    • +1

That Jacob&Co link was quite the trip, so have a +

  • +1

Money no object? Pretty much anything by MB&F. They are ridiculous and impractical but I'd have one in a heartbeat.

Achievable: the better looking Daytona - the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Sport.

Will happen: Edox Neptunian Skydiver, in orange.

  • I really love Fossil ES4177. But can't afford it rn :(

  • Blancpain 50 Fathoms Chronographe Flyback

  • +1

If I had a zillion dollars I have of course a large list of watches that I'd like just because I could afford it.

But here are a couple of 'sensible' watches that, if I had the cash in my pocket and walked past them in a store window I'd go inside and purchase there and then, and wear them regularly.

    Zenith Chronomaster Sport
In real life, it looks great. I love the overlapping, multicoloured subdials. If anyone says "Booo Daytona clone", Zenith provided the movement for the original Daytona, so there is a moral argument that the Daytona is actually a clone of this.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Paris 2024 Special Edition
This didn't get much love amongst Omega fans, but I've always liked the Seamaster divers and this one has about the perfect amount of bling that I like. And Paris is a special city for me.
A close second would be the Summer Edition, the photos don't do the blue justice.

And one that can only be earned, not bought:
Tudor Black Bay Chrono Pro Cycling Team exclusive
I've actually seen this one in the flesh, when I ended up staying around the corner from the team hotel when they were competing in the Tour de Romandie. I did stake out the hotel a bit hoping to catch Cancellara and get him to sign my bike helmet but didn't manage that, but I did manage to score a squizz at the watch from some of the other team members. Ordinarily the BB Chrono is a bit 'meh' for me, but in this iteration with the black coating and pops of colour, damn it looks fine.

    • Wow I’ve never seen that BB before, but it looks awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Love your choices too - although not really a fan of the Paris SMP 300. I’d need to see the summer in person first too. I’d love the black SMP 300 someday though…

    • the black coating and pops of colour, damn it looks fine.

I dropped a righteous twenty bucks on this bad boy for that. Oh, and the phantom red LED in the dial.

      Speckly wrist shot:
