What's Your Dream Watch?

I've long been a fan of Longines watches. Other watch makers have their own fans but my heart belongs to the Winged Hourglass. Specifically, I want to own the Ultra Chron - I don't know what it is but this timepiece just speaks to me. It's surprisingly affordable, too, considering it's a high-end Swiss brand, so there's actually hope I may get to own one at some point. If I had to aim lower then the next best would be the Master Collection L2.909.4.78.3, which is such a handsome watch in my eyes.

What's your favourite? Let's see what OzBargainers would buy if money wasn't an object and they didn't have to worry if it was on sale or not (although, that's still a nice idea…)

    Random dream watch
    IWC IW3719

    Money no object watch
    Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona

    • That is a very random dream watch. IWC did some very cool stuff 20 years ago! I love that era’s 354803

I saw that PN in the flesh went it last went up for sale. Happened to wanted by the auction house at the time of sale where they had a mass exhibition for it

My favourite PN is the 6263 RCO dial

      • That is a very random dream watch

Movie nerd watch choice. Lucky Number Slevin.

        :)

      • Why the daytona?

        • well, its a Daytona, so that's a classic, and if you look what Paul Newman's Daytona sold for you'll understand the 'money no object' reason for that selected vintage version :)

          • @SBOB: Yes but (this is just me thoughts) I feel like people gravitate towards Daytona just because of the resale price and perpetuating the hype. As oppose to picking a no money object watch because you just love the look or the story, etc.

            Just my 5 cents.

        • Love the
          - concentric circles on the dial
          - art deco font
          - Black with white sub dials
          - aesthetic of the RCO on the dial

I'm actually not a chrono guy, GMTs and dive watches are more my thing. The PN Daytona (well the 6263 reference in general) and the 116500 are the only two Daytonas that have appealed to me

your dream watch if money was no object is a $1200 computer watch?

      • +5

I’ll never win the agreement but I’d rather have a $1200 computer watch which tells me more than the time, than a dedicated watch only for $3k+

I always want to work smarter and not harder.

        • +5

Fair call, everyone is different. I wore an Apple Watch for nearly three years and loved the functionality at first, but once the novelty of it wore off I found the regular interruptions became more of an irritation and I wasn’t using even half the features it provided. I’m now at a point in my life where I appreciate a carefully crafted object that does one thing exceptionally well rather than something which offers a multitude of functions. I guess I could sum it up by saying I want to wear a Swiss watch in my wrist, not. Swiss Army knife.

          • @Chazzozz:

I found the regular interruptions became more of an irritation

With one button press, you will never be interrupted again.

I use my Apple Watch mainly for the step counter. But the weather, stop watch, heart rate, and messages come in handy too. Saves me having to pick up the phone.

When I exercise, I like to get my heart rate to a certain level and keep it there for a while. The Apple Watch is just a simple way of checking that I'm doing that because it has constant heart rate tracking during exercise.

          • +4

@Chazzozz: My most used function on my Apple Watch is to find my phone 😂.

Mechanical watch is a good jewellery. It sucks at keeping time and I can't think of anything else that mechanical watch does exceptionally well.

        • No hate, you want function and mechanical watches are more statement/art pieces nowadays than function and I get that.

I always want to work smarter and not harder.

Comes down to what you want out of a watch. I had a smart watch (Garmin Venu) and I'm so glad I'm back to mechanical. I'm not constantly looking at it or feel like it's judging me for not getting enough steps. The notifications that constantly come in feel like you are tethered to your phone.

With one button press, you will never be interrupted again.

This is true, but also the fact that it's "there" is enough to distract people. It's like the whole putting your phone on the table at lunch vs in your pocket, just the act of it being there means it's a distraction (for some)

          • @coffeeinmyveins:

I'm not constantly looking at it

I have this problem with my analogue /mechanical watches.
I'll stare at my watch for several seconds and have no idea what the time is. Some of them just look so damn good.

        • I like that you and most other people adopt this logic. It gives me even greater enjoyment in my interest in mechanical watches

        • Don’t forget to charge it nightly

    • +4

I’m with you. I spent most of my life wearing watches that told the time and dreaming of my Dick Tracey wrist phone. Now I can have it and much more. To me a watch is a practical thing not a piece of jewellery.

More than happy for people to have their statement timepieces, and I love a well made watch, but i just need more than that. I have a pair of cuff links that are the insides of a couple of old watches.

  • A round, rugged Apple Watch, that maybe looks like a diver's watch. With solar power.

    • Out of curiosity why would you want a round-faced smartwatch? A round face is only useful for an analog dial, and that's it.

      • +1

I guess because they like mechanical watch aesthetic but functionality of a smartwatch

    • Unfortunately solar wouldn't come close to generating enough power to be useful, not in regular watch form factor anyway. Maybe you could have a solar backpack or hat accessory with a wire down to the watch for charging, haha.

A lange & Sohne zeitwerk. But yeah, never in my lifetime. Couldn't justify it no matter how much money I have.

    Casio G-Shock Classic DW5600E-1V

It's the watch your dad had in 1989. It is cool for this fact because you are now the same age as your dad in 1989. You never understood this basic watch in your younger years since you always wanted a Rolex or Omega. You always wanted a Lamborghini or Ferrari too but guess what? You are older and drive a paid off Camry and just like that Camry this little beauty is the most practical thing ever and can probably survive WWIII. It can get beat up, neglected, you can leave it on at the neighbor's pool party and it will always be there to tell you happily that lunch time is in 10 minutes.Yeah 10 minutes can you believe that the morning went so quick for a Tuesday? Also remember it is now March. Yeah February kinda flew by right? It is a certain confidence that lets the world know you aren't compensating for any lack of character. It's not even solar. Keep of the light button and the battery will last 11 years no problem but, you will probably drop it on a cruse before then and have a archaeologist in 3789 C.E. find it in the now drained ocean and think it is a ancient symbol of our god 'Casio'. Yeah it is tougher than nails. And yes button 'A' is recessed more than the other buttons so your grubby mitts won't accidentally hit it and engage the 'change time' mode and eff up you perfectly synced quartz Feng Shui. Casio has got you bro.

      +1 for the description alone!

    • Oh, it goes much deeper.

Sittin' on the train, just mindin' my bizness
when a fella sat beside me, and he looked so familiar.
He was tall, he was bald, and as God was my witness,
he said "Take out yo wallet, if you don't then I'll kill ya".

I thought: why does this guy seem a bit outta place?
Then I knew it was him when I studied his face.

I got mugged on the subway by Riddick Bowe.
I'm pretty sure that it was him, but I'll never know
He took my wallet and my watch, it was a Casio.
I'm gonna pick me up another when I go to the store.

You know I tried to get away but I was just too slow.
      You're pretty low, Riddick Bowe.

My ultimate dream watch would be a DOXA, favoured by Clive cussler

  • +1

My dream watch is the Longines Legend Diver. So I bought it! Glad I did, no regrets at all.
If you like that Ultra enough maybe buy it.

My favourite watch is my daily wear a Garmin G1 Dive computer watch. I absolutely rate good smartwatches now - but the Longines for style, looking good and getting to wear my dream watch every time I want to look decent.

    • +2

If you like that Ultra enough maybe buy it.

I'm waiting for when I can go to one of the Longines boutiques in Melbourne or Sydney to see one in the flesh, and maybe try it on. I really want to hear it ticking, too, 36,000 vibrations per hour would sound amazing.

      • I own a few 4hz watches and cant hear the tick tock, so be prepared to be disappointed .

      • Yes, take your time, look and try one first.
I dithered for 3 years before I bought my LLD, by that time I knew I wanted it, knew pricing etc and didn’t over pay.

  • +4

use your money to buy time, not look at it.

    • +2

A watch will help you make more money though because you won't be late to work.

      • +1

This works, the later it gets the faster I drive.

      • What's the best watch you own?

    • 8pm to midnight would be my dream watch.

    Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

    • Nice pick. I see these pop up on Antiques Roadshow occasionally and it's always fun to see some pleb's eyes bug out when they're told the watch they bought in 1968 for £300 (which was like two week's wages back then) is now worth something like AU$20K.

      • $20k in two weeks is the average ozbargain salary

But on the wrist it looks like an ugly mess of metal

      • Oh, you're under the impression I would actually wear it lol.

It's Grand Seiko's first mechanical complication. That in itself makes it very desirable.

    Realistic: AP Royal Oak

One day: Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar

    Dream: Patek Grandmaster Chime

    • Great choices. I have a Royal Oak, and had a chance to buy a PP perpetual calendar about 10 years ago on holidays in the US. Gave it a miss cos it was a time pressure decision. Bad call. Lol

      • How much did you pay for the AP?

        • +1

$13.5k 10 years ago when audusd was 1:1. Now they are selling for 4-5x that secondhand 😱

  • Any Richard Mille, then sell it and buy a house!

    • +1

Buy a house plus an actually nice looking watch!
Richard Mille watches look terrible, to me.

    • I've read that watch takes about 1min 10s to cover the usual 1 min lap :)

      • Don't care. I'd sit in the pits to stare at it and serenade it.

No dream watch i have a phone. If i won a watch i would sell it.

    • Lovely.
Simon from The Cook and the Chef would sometimes wear a Monaco on that show.

    • I hated the Monaco for the longest time but it's really grown on me recently.. not sure how much me getting into F1 in recent years has to do with it..

  • That Longines Ultra Chron speaks to me so much too - it's a stunner. I am a big fan of Oris and Alpina watches and currently have my eye on the Oris Chronoris Limited Edition.

    • I own the oris chronoris and love it, its a bit small but wears very well . I purchased mine on Chrono24 ….box papers as new $1100.

      • Nice one. Chrono24 or Jomashop are my go to stores. Got rolled on the Chronoris Date model on eBay (lost in transit), but I finally got my money back, so the money will go towards the Limited Edition model.

        • Ive bought a few watches from Chrono24 including a omega triple date, all arrived in perfect condition.
Have a look at the FB Australian watch buy swap sell group , its very good , i bought the Tissot Heritage 1973 for $1500, as new box and papers ,right now its $3500 on the Tissot site, easy purchase.
