After a quick search there is nothing for Battery Life? Care to share please?

    %? Usage? Life left?

    • +1

Just put it in the description :)

  • cheap enough for impulse buy ? already have android phone and tablet (tablet usage is like twice a week for few hours)

    • +37

I got the exact same model on eBay for about $280 with keyboard. I have a S23 Ultra, and have always had large Samsung phones. I do most of my work on my desktop and phone, but there was a gap I needed to fill and I went through iPads, a Galaxy Tag S5e, Lenovo tab, 2-1 laptops, ultrabooks, Lenovo business laptops, a high-spec Chromebook and sold all of them.

I got this because it's cheap so I can just chuck it around. I don't even attach the keyboard 90% of the time and it's not in a case. I bought a Surface pen but returned it because I didn't need it. The touch controls on Win11 (you can upgrade and I'm getting updates) are good enough. 8/256 is plenty and it has a micro SD slot. It has native streaming apps except Stan. It's light and thin for a full Windows machine. I can do work shit, I can stream, I can torrent, I can video conference, I can waste money on OzB.

The screen is excellent. Battery life is good; I get about 6-7 hours. And I think this one is fanless. Only cons are I/O and propriety charging port but you can buy an aftermarket USB-C adapter for under $20 so I don't even use the OEM charger. This is 45w, but even a 20W powerbank can charge it slowly.

If I break it, idc, I'll just buy another one. It's $200 bucks

      • You do kinda what the keyboard with trackpad for these. But I guess for $200 you can't go wrong, it's already six years old so you won't lose sleep over it if it suddenly breaks.

        • +4

I have the keyboard, I hardly use it. Only when I have to type long angry emails.

          • @rosebank: Maybe I'm just too old. Even my iPad I've become accustomed to using the keyboard and trackpad. Young people today grew up with tablets and phones, some don't even have a normal computer.

            • @AustriaBargain: It probably depends on whether you are using it for mostly media consumption, huh?
If using it for Disney+, Netflix, Spotify etc, you probably don't want or need a keyboard, for everything you probably do.
For this price, I think I might grab one of these, I will only use it for media consumption when travelling, such as plane or hotel.

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: No you have sense and taste, smearing your greasy fingers over a touch screen and blocking what you can see is an inferior control method for anything besides very simple things. I can do things a million times faster and more productive with a mouse and keyboard.

          • @rosebank: angry emails and that wall of text above? :P

            • +9

@wellzi: A lot of my comments on here are walls of text. I bought a mech keyboard with blue switches just for typing comments here and angry emails, because if I bang on the keyboard it's really noisy and feels like I'm yelling.

              • +1

@rosebank: It just doesn't feel right if you don't have adequate click. I understand!

          • @rosebank: I do have a keyboard and I always use it.
Not to type but as a screen protector.

            • @easywallet: ooooo.. I see what you mean now. Took me a while, perhaps u should practise typing simpler jokes on your keyboard.. ;)

      • +1

Cant agree more. I love a good old disposable sometimes. Cheap and cheerful

  • +3

    CPU not win11 officially upgradable

    • +7

obviously the CPU is like 6 years old but if u loaded Win11 urself it will probably be fine

      • -3

Don't do doubt it, also only 8gb ram..

        • +1

Just put linux. Itll be blazin.

          • @ozchobie: Perhaps a homelab server with a built-in display? Mount it as a home assistant dashboard?

        • +8

pretty sure Win11 works on 8GB ram devices

        • +10

          You could try AtlasOS
          https://atlasos.net/

Which is a lighter build of Windows 10 or W11 with some features stripped out.

Linus Tech Tips did a vid on this recently

          • @scrimshaw: is that official supported from MS? or just a hack?

actually looks like a hack, i heard that MS was releasing a lite version of windows 11 soon?

            • +3

@hippyhippy: It's fan-made project. There are lots of caveats with this sort of thing, since it's not "official", any Windows updates you apply may actually undo some of the tweaks made to it.

It is most likely that Windows Updates will revert changes from Atlas, so you might have to re-run the AME Wizard on updates (there might be a tool to check the integrity of the tweaks).

For those that don't want to go through this trouble there's also Google's Chrome OS Flex (which unfortunately doesn't have Android appstore). This is less troublesome, more secure, and maintenance-free, but understandably ChromeOS is not for everyone.

              • @scrimshaw:

                … there's also Google's Chrome OS Flex

Interesting. So this Chrome OS Flex is free with lifelong security updates, unlike their chromebook that has end of support expiry date ?

            • +4

@hippyhippy: You probably mean LTSC version of Windows 11 that was announced.

I personally wouldn’t use any version of Windows besides LTSC. Zero bloat.

Windows 10 LTSC IoT is supported until 2027.

Even though LTSC isn’t officially meant for home users, it can easily be “sourced”. Much better than using some hack like AtalsOS.

              • @PainToad: ltsc is a support model if you ring ms under your enterprise agreement, …..no new features or patches …… no defender updates, etc …..idea is if you are air gappped it keeps in running , after most home are end of support and want features and updates and defender updates …..none win 10 or 11 or office versions stop working ……they just don’t get new features or patches ………

                • @garage sale: All completely wrong.

LTSC version do get new features, just a lot more delayed because the priority is stability. Most “features” are just bloat anyway. The Windows 10 version won’t get anymore features, but neither will any Windows 10 version. Windows 11 LTSC will get be features added in future updates.

                  You still get security updates.

I suggest you do some more research

Bought a second hand surface pro 5 a few months ago.
          Came with window 11 installed.
          Works just fine.

    • +3

Been using this with Win11 for about a month and still getting updates

    • Win 11 runs on my Surface Pro 2 just fine with the CPU check disabled when upgrading.

      • For some reason I can't get this to work on my Surface Pro 2. One of the drivers wasn't compatible and so the install didn't want to progress.

    • +1

i recently brought a second hand pro 3 and was able to install win11.

    • +3

I have installed win 11 on many various older unsupported i7 and i5 with fresh install. Download wins 11 iso > use Rufus to create bootable USB and strip off other unnecessary options + allow to install smaller ram machine

  • +8

If you treat this purchase like a crappy Chinese tablet, rather than an upgradeable Windows laptop, then your expectations should be met. $200 is a good deal.

I like the idea but the difficulty in upgrading RAM & SSDs on these is as much of a turn-off as the proprietary charger.

    • +3

yeah same with any other tablets and ipads, no way upgrading inside, already good this surface has micro sd. some xiaomi tablet doesnt have sd slots anymore

      • +2

I think the recent model MS Surface Pros have a removable cover to replace the SSD.

        • +1

          They do.

        • +3

          Surface Pro 7+ and newer

      • +1

I still have the surface pro 4 and still use it from time to time. Does all the basic stuff I need.

You can get a SurfaceConnect to USB C adapter. I can confirm that it will work off a 45w USB C charger

Also it was running fairly well for what it was. I had it docked up to 2 monitors running 1080p on each with no issues.

    • +1

Crappy Chinese tablet? Lol , SB!

      • +1

That's pretty much what $200 gets you these days

    • I agree, It's better than the Chromebook Duet in every way and competitive to Clear's Chinese tablet deals.

  • +1

    Impulse bought!

    • what will be your usage scenarios ?

      • +2

I impulse bought for note taking while studying.
I tend to smudge the ink when using pen + paper, so this will be nice.

        • +2

lucky im not student anymore but yeah, i dont even know how to write with pen now. everything is typing and typing on keyboard or screen

        • +2

Are you left handed? Cos its a real left handed problem haha

          • +1

            @CodeXD: Indeed.
the curse of being left handed.

      • No idea yet. I have some expenses i can claim from work that expire soon so i had to buy something. Probably will use it for ultimate guitar website

  • What is the condition of the unit like? Does it have scratches on the screen?

    • +4

They might have a minor mark or scratch, but these are Grade A units.

      • oop I forgot to choose +keyboard & mouse
        where can I pay $10?

      • +3

What kind of keyboard and mouse for addition $10?

        • -1

Rep said this on page 2

It’s a keyboard and a mouse. Not a type cover

  • -7

"This is for the table only, so there is no keyboard" Does the table come with legs?

  • Can you stack this with $10 OFF first purchase code?

  • +2

Note that battery replacement and other repairs are notoriously difficult, to the point that these should be considered disposable.

    • So the battery replacement is like iphone when needs a techi to do it? How much are replacementts

      • +1

There are no less than 54 Steps required to remove the battery. Then you have to put the device together which is basically the 50+ steps done in reverse.

        https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Microsoft+Surface+Pro+5+Battery…

        • Hrrmmm the battery may be deal killer. of it cost $200 to replace and has to be done fairly soon to have proper use of it, probably not worth it

      • +1

        It's much harder than iPhone.

  • Still use my Surface Pro 3 daily without any issues, but this seems to be a cracking deal, especially since I've already got the docks/type covers for it

    • daily? for what ? note taking at class?

      • +1

Pretty much anything I've thrown at it has worked. Used Photoshop on it for quite awhile without any issues, web browsing, emails. Even have an old one (cracked screen) setup as a media server. Albeit I don't use either of them unplugged so couldn't really say how the battery life goes

        • +12

Your old one with a cracked screen…. You might throw too many things at it…

    • Same OEM battery? OR have u replaced it? What did it cost?

      • Have never replaced the battery, but as above I never use it off battery so obviously everyones milage will vary here @Gavman

        • Quick OzB side note - do replies not drop down below comments now or have I done something weird
        • do replies not drop down below comments now

If I correctly understand what you're asking, I think it stops at three levels or something like that, and just adds @someone at the top of the reply instead.

          • @pjetson: Thanks for the reply @pjetson, I think it's actually a problem me switching to Chrome, instead of having the replies laid out like normal under a "sub comment" (sorry, don't know exactly what it's called" they all just look like they've been made as new comments. Will try fix it up today but everything looks fine on Edge or mobile. I thought I was going bonkers!

  • +2

someone said for laptop buy minimum of intel gen 8 if possible (the 7 and 8 differences are massive), is that the same rule applies to this tablet thing?

    • Wondering the same

    • +6

yes, 8th gen i5 mobile CPUs are 4-core, 7th gen only dual core.

    • Gen 7 is fine for most use cases

    • The best way to look at laptops is how long you'll be able to use it for, how much it'll cost you per year based on the price, and whether that meets your weekly budget for having that capability available to you.

My own budget is about two bucks per week. Buying second-hand or refurb devices, getting 2-3 years usage out of them, then once they have zero residual value repurposing or selling, has worked out pretty well for me for the last decade. Prior to that, generational differences in CPU and software requirements made that approach infeasible.

If you don't want the hassle then yeah, buy an 8th Gen CPU or higher.

    • +1

This literally is the price point at which you would say just farque it and spring for the 7g. Just pair it with your favourite BT mech KB and you will be golden.

  • +1

I wouldn’t touch it. I have surface pro 6 with the same spec and windows 10. CPU is constantly running at 80-~100% with nothing running except window. The CPU load doesn’t decrease over time stays at 80~100.

    • +2

CPU is constantly running at 80 - ~100%

Nuts! I assume you have scanned for malware, etc.
How is the battery life before having to plug in the charger?

      • There’s no malware. It was running fine till sp2 upgrade. After that it’s constantly running at 80-100 with host service diagnostic policy service taking 40% and anti malware another 30

        https://imgur.com/a/S7P1o25

        https://imgur.com/a/YRuVTKZ

        • +4

          That's definitely not right.
As others have suggested, I would do a fresh install, something else is working that CPU.

        • Yeah, nah, you’ve got crappy drivers or something perhaps.

        • +1

That's an issue with Windows and with Office 365. I would check event manager to see if there are critical errors appearing for the Diagnostic Policy Service. For the Office click to run, make sure you turn off any fast or convenience features for Office 365, other than file associations and standard shortcuts on your start menu.

    • +2

      Have you formatted it?

      Doesn't sound right

    • +1

Wow, even my pro 4 ran better than that. Something wrong with yours? Tried a fresh install of windows?

    • +2

Have you formatted an reinstalled Windows? Sounds like malware.

    • Something is definitely not right… do a Windows reinstall after backing everything up. Then make sure all Windows updates are installed.

I have 2x Surface Pro 5's… as I write this I have one open on my desk playing music on YouTube via Edge, and it's not going above 3% CPU usage.
Great tablets that have full Windows functionality, nice hi-res screen.

    • I have an HP Elite 1st Gen with an M-series CPU - inferior in every way to your computer - and it runs everything just fine. There's definitely something wrong with your specific computer, as others have said you should do a completely from-scratch reinstall of Windows as a starting point.

    • I suspect this is a device specific issue, not general surface pro 6 issue.

    • But you also atleast paying 50% less than new. So 20% less power is just fine. Not every device has to be best at everything. For 199$ delivered i got zero complaints

  • +6

Would be cool to turn this into a portable monitor at this price

    • Tried to connect to my surface pro 5 as a wireless display from my dell laptop.
      Couldn't get it working.
Could be just me not doing it right.

      • Same couldn't get it working with my Pro 4

  • Anybody recommend if this would be a considerable upgrade from the Pentium Surface Go from this deal and would the same keyboard be compatible?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/703207

    • Can confirm that it will be a very noticeable upgrade.
Can't comment on the keyboard because I don't own a surface go.

      • Keyboard would not be compatible. The devices are different sizes.

  • Does it come with a stylus pen?
