Figured might be worth it if you are planning on switching.

This is kinda the standard JB hi-fi deal,

Last week they had a $1200 gift card on the same plan.

ahh so nothing really special. i just read more and you don't get telstra loyalty points either so I guess its a trade off. Im looking to replace my laptop soon so might wait for that bigger offer.

      • It's not really a trade-off. The loyalty points and the rewards they offer are a waste of time.

        • +9

Just bought me 2 years of Amazon Prime on Telstra points. Not a waste of time for me!

          • @ayoole: So like $120-150 worth of savings over a long time vs a $1000 discount every other year? Yeah, this really isnt changing my mind on the JB Hifi deal being way better.

        • Speak for yourself - I’ve redeemed rewards for products that I have wanted. I’m with Telstra anyway, so may as well get something out of it.

        • I needed a webcam urgently then realised I had Telstra points sitting there - saved me $150

      • +3

I did get the Telstra points last time I signed up for one of these plans (just out of contract now)

  • With the 24 month contracts, is there any option to opt out early ?

    • You have the pay back the voucher.

    • +1

You have to be in a known black spot and complain hard
I used to have work telstra which would not work inside the house which I could not change and just used home wifi
When i needed my own phone did one of these deals 3.5 years ago, when we were in lockdown rang and just said this was not good and got the ‘known black spot’ response and was let go without charge, Vodafone and Optus were perfect
Telstra had tried to install a micro-cell but the NIMBYS down the road complained and it never went in (their Telstra was fine…)

Seems like a really expensive loan…

  • +8

So, assuming you use the $1000 gift card fully, the real cost of this plan is $57.33 per month, over 24 months. ($1376 total).

    • +1

With boost $150 plan, I can use the amount of $1376 for 9.17 years instead of two years. I am lease concerned about 300 GB a month.

    • The real cost is a lot less for those who are able to tax deduct the cost of the phone plan though

      • Or expense it through their work

  • Tesltra

Are they a new telco ????

    • +10

Yes. Tesla purchased Telstra last week in a hostile takeover.

      • +1

You gave me a good laugh - thanks 😂

        • Thank you. I hope it was worth it. Elon has a contract on my head now for fake news. 😂🤣

  • +4

This is actually great to the extent your workplace might reimburse your phone bill.

  • All these big voucher and big discount (Apple Store) to lock you in in a contract for higher price is only good for those who can claim mobile from company expenses.

Same plan from Vodafone is $34 cheaper, so basically your are paying off the $1000 gift card over 24 months with a $7.67 discount.

    • +4

Except Telstra actually has a usable service almost anywhere inhabited in Australia.

      • +2

        Not where I go….

CBD everyone is the same, Burwood all garbage and where I live Optus and Vodafone within 500 meter, Telstra refuse to put a station on that tower. I am at least 3km to other Telstra tower! So painful!

  • +3

I got the $1200 one 8 months ago. Still have $950 gift card burning a hole in my wallet. Don't just want to use it on useless shit. I wish Telstra just makes their plans cheaper instead of doing all this crap.

  • +1

    $69 yes $99.no 24.months lmao this aint 2000s

    • The $69 plan is also 24 months these days

      • There is a 12 month and 24 month option for the $69 plan

        • That used to be the case, it looks like they are now both 24-month plans.

Nice apple, check out this orange.
    $150 BOOST 140GB 12-Month SIM
Blows my mind that some people have unlimited NBN WiFi at home and still spend $99/mo on data

Edit: thanks for sharing btw OP

Great deal if you live alone and can use this also for home internet. Also many people can probably claim half or more of the $2,400 on tax.

  • How is this a deal in anyway? The plan still comes down to about $57.33/month.

    • Claiming $99 per month on tax for someone who is at the highest bracket would effectively give a $45 discount. Making this only $12.33 a month. Not to mention the residual value of the phone which is sold off at a higher price post $1000 discount thereby making a two yearly (or yearly, if subscribing to the $500 gift card 12 month deal) upgrade free/profitable every time.

      • +1

That's why we should support Stage 3 tax cuts, to cut the marginal tax rates of the wealthy and therefore cut out this almost scam ;-)

      • So you're attempting to turn a not si much deal into something of a deal by bringing in tax? Thanks champ! Wonder how many people look it that way.

        • +1

Not attempting. Simply stating how it can be good for those who use their phone for work purposes and are eligible to claim it against their tax - which they would claim the regardless of whether they get a gift card or not. The gift card is the offset against the cost here, not the tax claim.

If you don't use your phone for work purposes at all then quite clearly this would present itself as less of a deal (if any) as @thousandsuns has mentioned.

Supporting tax cuts has nothing to do with offsetting one's income with eligible tax benefits. Also, in our inflationary environment (which has not proportionally scaled with tax brackets btw), the "wealthy" that you're referring to isn't the person earning a little over $180k anymore. As I'm sure you're aware, earning 180k 15 years ago (which has been the highest tax bracket), is vastly different to earning 180k today. But sure, let's all support tax increases on middle income earners to feed the lower income earners, all the while leaving the highest income earners to frolic in the meadows.

This age old strategy to make dumb lower income earners fight with hardworking and somewhat successful middle income households is clearly alive and well today.

Just be mindful that you are no longer able to bring your old number into new plan and then cancel the old service with keeping the gift card.
Telstra and JB make it hard, and they will try to hand ball you to each other until you give up.

  • Any other decent mobile plan + gift voucher deals that aren't 24 months at the moment?

  • For this amount of data usage I will just burn more boost / go for felix.

  • I received a $1200 GC last Boxing Day for 24 months paying $89/month.

There are saving because I sold the GC for $1000 ending paying about $48/month.

  • -1

Claim tax + $20 vcb discount. Worth it for me.

Just $1200 being the norm for a voucher…

If you’re clever, they’ll do a better deal on a purchase eg. Need a tv, they’ll likely discount it more and you use the voucher.

If you need something it’s worth it.

Otherwise not a deal esp at $1k

  • +1

Who uses 300GB per month on their phone? That's crazy.

    • Just leave wifi off.

    • +1

People who use a hotspot as their home broadband?

    • Used 450GB data on my phone as i don't have a home broadband.

    • If you buy a new phone every year, you could try tether the data to replace your home internet, although that would ruin your phone. lol

  • $99 and no international calling.

  • I think 1000 is the new 1200 as inflation forces telco like jb/telstra decide just how much they can charge and still offer a discount

plus ask for the port in monthy credit, $10-20 off the $99 post plan, your luck may vary but,,, its ozb where you just persist for the deal!

    • As I said above, you won’t get any credits on these new plans. They’re upfront (prepaid) plans similar to Telstra’s standard plans.

  • anyone wants to sell the giftcard in Melbourne?
