Nice to see Google putting some effort into tablets again.

    • They will not ignore tablet space for next 5 years

    • +1

Good luck on that. I'm not buying google tablets again. They will abandon them in the future and you'll be left with a product with no new features and on life support. I prefer samsung on that. Google behaves like it's a start up

Riiiiight, just like they're going to abandon their Pixel line of smartphones?

Stop living in the past, Google and their devices aren't going away unless the sun explodes.

        • I am sure nexus had similar fate, and there had been limited supports from Google in tablet space for a very long while until 12L (even that i feel like is more because foldables are being pushed). We had Pixel C and look at the state of Android tablet 8 years later.

Frankly speaking, while I am genuinely thinking about getting this (more as something to use at home as i use my tab s7 at work), Google have been neglecting tablet space for a very long while.

Huh… I'm surprised there is still a market for $900 tablet's that aren't iPads. I thought this got left behind last decade.

    • +2

I am looking at buying a tablet, and yeah, my budget for an Android tablet is like <$300, if I'm spending more than $400 then I'm probably buying an ipad :S

      • +4

If all your apps are android it makes it hard

    • +1

I have an Ipad pro and its not the greatest if you are full Google with email, calendar etc etc. Even if you have google stuff as defaults Apple still does certain things and point you to their apps.

And no matter what, the facebook app crashes and reboots the ipad when you are on it for more than 5 minutes looking at FB marketplace. Seems kinda common but no fix works.

  • +1

Something of a silly price, considering a $200-300 tablet can do virtually everything this can. Google really have lost the plot.

Oh, and note you don't actually get anything till 20 June

  • Does the speaker dock come with every Google Pixel?

Tensor G2 is built with the most layers of hardware security in any tablet, making it even more resilient to attacks

At the same time, Google is sucking all your information behind the scene. That's just Google's business model.

Knowing Google's history of shafting their Assistant Smart Displays, wouldn't be surprised if this Pixel Tablet met a similar fate, even if it does run normal Android apps.

As much as I find iPadOS too simplistic, just get an iPad instead for a better tablet experience.

  • +3

Having had (cheap approx. $400) Android tablets in the past, and now having an iPad pro, it's a much better experience.
Would have to expect that though, 3x the price in this case, but it is a very well thought out UI, seems to be a lot better than Android IMO.

    • This.I have an Ipad Pro M1 11-inch and even though I don't like iPadOS, it's miles better than Android in terms of optimisation for apps, and the whole media consumption experience.

      • +1

Interesting, what don't you like about iPadOS?
It annoys me a bit that you can't run apps like VS Code, and no good options for a terminal that I could find.
It seems like it should be just as capable as a macbook, but it's not quite the same.
This is my first apple device, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

        • +4

Sharing stuff like simple stuff you can do on Bluetooth on Android, you have to jump thru hoops on iPad. It's just not as seamless a process for me as what it is between apps on Android. I know i'm not a power user, but yeah it still shits me.

Its a media consumption device for me and my kid, and i want to use it for things like Final Cut / DaVinci / Logic, but i'm too old and too lazy now to fiddle around with that stuff like I used to years back :(

    • +7

My hope is that through having a viable first party product in the market, Google will place some more emphasis on developing Android for tablets and pushing developers to do the same.

      • +1

They've been there and done that several times, but still nothing of significance haha after all these years #facts

        • +4

They tried with the Nexus line a while back, with limited success. But I really liked my Nexus tablet, and I'd love to see a new emphasis on tablet experiences with the vanilla Android experience from the Pixel line.

Besides, it's not at all healthy for consumers that iPadOS devices own so much of the tablet market. Strong competition breeds a better product for everyone, and Apple needs a good shove occasionally.

          • @klaw81: Well Samsung has been making great tablets for years…. Google honestly hasn't cared at all, and still shows they don't care since no real software changes at all. If Google made the software, Samsung and other tablet makers would benefit instead of doing it all themselves. But here we are yet again, Google made a tablet, and the software hasn't really changed. Apps support big screens, but nothing specific for tablets.

            • +1

@onlinepred: Samsung make great hardware, but their software experience is pretty terrible compared to vanilla Android IMO and every time I pick up a Samsung device I'm immediately annoyed by the mess of duplicate apps, and all the "features" they add in that just get in the way, or make things more complicated. I cannot understand how people put up with it, let alone advocate for it. But I guess everyone has their own comfort zone - maybe they all blend into the background after a few weeks?

Google has clearly put some work into the tablet interface for the Fold device too, and apparently they've updated 50+ of their own native apps to work better in tablet mode. They've also done some nice work on the multi-tasking interface, which is really welcome. I look forward to trying them out, although I really have no need for a tablet.

              • @klaw81: To be fair, Samsungs software is what pushed Google to make better features. Most of their features are inspired or derived from Samsung.
Samsung and Huawei made tablets with split views many years before Google, and allowed it on phones.

I do understand that people like simple phones though, and for sure that's why I bought an iPhone, coming from 11 years of Nexus and Pixel, the current pixels are so dumbed down and lack real power user features anyway, not much use hanging around for the hardware and software issues. After getting a work S23 though, I really notice just how much the PIxels are lacking in software features. I think most power users will obviously move towards Samsungs for their features and customisations.

Given how long Google takes to upgrade their own apps, I think it will be many years before you see most Google apps fully support it. They only just updated the Home app to the old theme haha.

It is good that Google are putting effort into though.

          • +2

@klaw81: loved my nexus 7! what everyone forgets is its big selling point was stock android. Every other android tablet and phone was an OS dogs breakfast.

            • @shroomish: I have a Nexus 9 (HTC) and a Pixel C that still work. Both still have more than 3 hours screen on time too.

  • +6

Not sure I could go back to 60Hz displays…

Lenovo Tab P11 Plus 128GB Productivity Tablet (Slate Grey) $319.20 2 available digiDirect if anyone interest

    • Running out of support soon, 12 months max, some rumours it's even getting cut off before the end of the year.

      • If it can be unlocked and supports treble so it can have GSIs flashed onto it… support will only end when you decide to turf because the battery is a gone-er.

  • Would be nice to be able to get Google to match this deal, and use the store credit of $400 from buying my Pixel 7 Pro….

  • Having used ipad Pros and several Android tablets in the past going from Sony all the way to Samsung, the number of properly tablet optimised apps on the ipad is vastly superior to Android.

    • It will improve. How much I don't know but with the Fold and now Tablet developers will start developing for that form factor.

      • I don't have high hopes. The tablet market is basically the ipad market now.

        • +1

For now. Once foldable phone tablet becomes the norm. Android tablet experiences will rical ipad os

          • @ChickenAdobo: We've heard this with every tailed half baked attempt Google has tried for tablets. The selection proper tablet optimised apps on iPadOS is so much better, Android just doesn't hold a candle. Ipads are also entrenched now with schools using them.

            • +1

@twister292: Yeah i get you school and enterprise are using ipad but in the consumer market the galaxy fold and pixel fold phones will make a dent in ipad os marketshare in the not too far future.

              • @ChickenAdobo: I don't think so. Galaxy tablets and Pixel C was supposed to catch up to iPads in 2015. They have fallen further behind since, not closed the gap.
