Coming from a Dell XPS 13 9630, below are what I like about this Yoga 7 Gen 8:
+ AMD Ryzen 7 7735U is more than enough for my needs yet still very efficient and cool. Also good for battery life
+ AMD Radeon 680M is one of the best integrated GPU out there
+ OLED display looks gorgeous
+ Tablet mode convertibility + Digital Pen
+ Still have both USB Type-A & Type-C
+ 71Wh battery is great
+ Lenovo's system management Vantage feels better to use than Dell's SupportAssist

What I don't like:
- Not as lightweight as its sleek design suggests. Even a bit heavier than a ThinkPad P14s gen 2 (1.4kg)
- Downgrade: HDMI 1.4b compared to HDMI 2.0 on last gen (Yoga 7 Gen 7)
- Downgrade: 2 x 2W speakers compared to 4 x 2W (2x woofers, 2x tweeters) speakers on last gen

Other notable points:
* Ryzen 7 7735U on this one is almost a rebranded 6800U from last gen so don't expect higher performance. This is, however, still a great CPU
* Maximum RAM config is only 16GB RAM (soldered). Still satisfy my need but might not be a some people

  • Is there, uh, any way of obtaining an edu email address without… ahem …being enrolled in an actual course?

This is such a great machine, but I can’t bring myself to buy it when I know it goes so cheap on the edu store.

Edu is meant for real students

    • No such way.
Edu is meant for real students.

    • Straight up phone lenovo and ask them if they will do it from an ordinary buyer that this price.

I've had varying degrees of success doing this, always getting some discount all the way to doing even better on price.

Do you have teacher friends? They have edu emails.

    • Just talk to rep on regular site, when he/she says that there is no further discount etc. ask them to talk to thr manager. I got my last ideapad price matched to edu site by this approach.

Does your OLED has a very grid like screen? My 9i OLED screen's grid are quite visible.

Yes it does, it's related to the touch screen.

  • Good deal, but waiting for a 7840u model.

    • Why u when you can have hs

    • At this point I feel like I am as well.

the 780m will take care of most of my gaming needs on the go when I'm travelling for work and away from my desktop.

Was going to settle for the 6800u but at this point with the 7840u around the corner might as well wait for it.

      • Am of similar mind on this - but considering it took so long to see the rdna2 CPUs into market, who's to say we won't be months still until we actually see 7840U…

  • thanks op for great description of the laptop, and your sense of strengths and weaknesses.

  • Thanks!

    • not flip, not oled, not touch. higher spec cpu lower size ssd at 256

Thinkpad X1 Carbon is more like "businessmen laptop". Compare to Yoga 7, the X1 is:
+ More recognisable, classic Thinkpad style
+ Much more portable (~1.12kg compared to 1.49kg Yoga). If you are likely to drag your laptop around, travel a lot, you will appreciate it
      + Surprisingly more port options with 2 x Thunderbolt + 2 USB-A + HDMI 2.0b despite its size
      + Overall better build quality
      - Normally use a low powered Intel CPU an the integrated GPU is inferior to the 680M on the Yoga. But that would be good for battery life.

However the X1 is much more expensive compare to this Yoga 7, even on sale. I would have choose the Thinkpad over the Yoga if it's not for the high price

*Note: All Thinkpad X1 use Intel CPU. If you want something similar but use AMD, have a look at Thinkpad Z series

  • Does the 10% cashrewards stack? As this would be an even more incredible deal if it did.

Watch out with these, I have one from last year and the keyboard driver error is horrible.
basically when you type random letters are omitted. it is some sort of check that you are not pressing the keys too fast - more than 1/sec

  • bought this. noice!

  • unfortunately they downgraded the touchpad from glass to glass like 'mylar' too.
however they may have sent this one with all the issues of the previous model fixed and there are 2 oled screens to choose from.
