I've got the FR245 Music and I rate it. If all you're after is a sports watch with running metrics it's the one to go for.

Great battery life. It's pretty shit from a smartwatch point of view though.

    • +1

Spot on - the battery life on these is immense.

      • You'll get up to 7 days of battery life in Smartwatch Mode

is that it? Or how much would one expect in "normal" / non-smart mode?

My current tracker does 7-10 days & it includes Constant HR, detailed Sleep tracking, app notifs, used heavily as timer / step tracker.

Previous tracker did 35 days, so 7 days is far from impressive.

        • My Coros does a month easy which is about 150km haha

          • @drprox: Yeah, I think I need to look elsewhere…

I think lots of people have experienced watches like "Samsung" and I heard stories of "daily" charging so the bar for these people is pretty low.

Might go back to an Amazfit (currently have Huawei Watch Fit from 18 months ago.)

          • @drprox: Agree that Coros is just another level in terms of running watch battery life. Garmin is still great if you want to get into its ecosystem, but Coros did manage to get Kipchoge to move from Garmin…

            • @scotty: Does Corros have an online platform yet like Garmin Connect?

              • @chrisandrew: Coros is pretty much app only from what I've seen. However you can push the data to other platforms like Strava.

                • @scotty: Yeah, same last time I looked into them. But I heard murmurings of a web platform over 2 years ago now. Bummer.

    • +1

Same. I use it just for running metrics, and it does the job. I have no use for the smartwatch stuff when my phone is always in my pocket anyway. I wouldn't be able to stand a watch with a one-day battery life.

    • agreed - this is perfect for me as i wasn't looking for a full on smartwatch (i don't fancy another phone on my wrist). The widgets and notification syncing are smart enough for me and it is lowkey enough to be worn for sleep tracking etc.

    • Does it connect to their Chest strap heart monitor?

      • +3

Yep, I run a Garmin HRM-Pro and it hasn't skipped a beat with it.

I've also used a Tickr with it without issue.

    • I have a Garmin 245, is it worthwhile to buy a Garmin 245m? I want to listen to music while running but I am concerned about the quality. I've read some comments that the bluetooth is spotty.

      • I've never had issues when I've used it. That being said, nowadays I usually run with my phone so it doesn't really matter.

  • got $99 venu sq from last deal, is this FR245 better than venu sq for running?
    thanks

    • -2

I don’t think there is much difference other than the round vs square shape and few minor things.

    • +3

Venu sq doesn't have the more advanced metrics (stride etc). It also doesn't store music or control music playback.

  • I have the 245m, it’s great for exercise and listening to music. Had it for about 2 years now, maybe longer and still getting 3-5 days out of it, and that’s while training for a marathon. If you’re after smart watch functions, really all it does is display notifications, so don’t get it for that reason.

    • Is it good to listening to music while running? I read some comments that the bluetooth is spotty and just if it is worthwhile to buy one since I have a 245 already.

      • Only had issues with one run, and I think it was the headphones not the watch. Just turned them off and on again and it was fine.

  • Anyone got good suggestions for replacement band for Forerunner 245? Not really liking the white but seems like that's the only one discounted.

    • Amazon is likely your friend there but I don't know who is quality vs cheap rubbish unfortunately!

      • I got Ancool ones for my 7x . Looks the same as AliX ones but the buckle does not fall off on theirs and the buckle material seem to be not made of nickel or whatever metal am allergic to.

    • +1

I’ve bought a few different colours from ebay and all have been good. Any band that’s 20mm will fit.

    • +2

As an example, the black stainless band I have this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07F29V7JN/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Looks great, but it's not as comfy to run in since it's a bit heavier and is either a lil loose or a lil tight compared to the stock band which has a bit of give because of the material, so I don't leave it on all the time. I use the stock black band for that.

As others mentioned there are a bunch of other styles on amazon, anything that's a 20mm will do.

    • found plenty on aliexpress for $3-$4 shipped.

    • I was sent a white one a few years ago as a replacement for a dead black one.
I put the black band on the white face and it didn't look great if I'm honest, so stuck with all white.

      • My thoughts exactly! Easy to change the band but the white face is going to make it hard. Black face on the other hand looks great with other band colors.

    • I think this is a good idea. I find the stock band can rub against the skin and cause a rash. I have alternate wrists when wearing it multiple days.

    • Just note the watch face will still be white

  • Damn that 245 is cheap.

I purchased my 55 for $250 last year.

  • Great price for 245

  • +1

I had just arranged to meet someone tonight from Facebook Marketplace to buy a second hand aqua Forerunner 245 for $160 when this offer came in. Just bought it and going to pick it up at lunchtime! Thanks OP! Going to be hard to make up a good excuse for tonight though…

    • I have a similar scenario, in the middle of negotiating a purchase on marketplace for a $600 Apple Watch series 8 - which I didn't really NEED, just want something to listen to music to and map my walks - $400 saved!

    • +6

Tell them your watch arm fell off.

    • +7

Just apologise and explain? Like, I get that it's inconvenient for them, but surely people can't hold a grudge for that kind of thing…

      • +1

She said she "put it as pending as a gesture of good faith for this sale". Online reputation rating is like a gun to my head!

  • Hey great price :) I use Samsung Watch 4 now for exercises, occasional gps quirks but overall pretty happy.
    Would 245 be better?

    • +2

IMO for $199 you cant go wrong!

I used to have one of these but gave it to my mum and never got another, the screen isn't as vivid because its MIP - however its perfect to view outside, plays music easily once you get your spotify playlist on there (need paid spotify account for this) and battery lasts over a week. The Garmin connect app is also really intuitive and easy to use.

Only thing that isn't great about these watches is that they aren't really smart watches - not good for notifications etc, but we are all usually stuck to our phones anyways

I just purchased - and am actually really looking forward to using a 245 again

  • +5

$199 a good deal for a Garmin watch but claiming it’s a $400 saving is probably stretching it. They need to be selling them at full price to do so, and I highly doubt anyone is paying $599 for it these days considering the 255 and 265 have both superseded it.

    • Ignoring sites like Catch and Kogan - the cheapest I can see for an authorised Garmin seller is Highly Tuned Athletes for $435

Either way $199 is a steal compared to the 255 for $699 or 265 for $769

      • 255 has been going for 499 (bikebug) and might be worth it for the better gps, better battery life, and Garmin Pay.
That said I'm sticking with my Fenix 5 until it dies hopefully there will be an LTE or 5g garmin watch by then.

        • bikebug seems to be out of stock and I haven't received notification for new stock for > 1year.

          • +1

@Scouttman: Keep an eye out for the different colours, picked one up a blue one for my dad at the end of March from bikebug.

  • great deal, was wondering how this would compare to my Forerunner 55. cheers

  • +5

Note, the EPIX 2 that is on sale here is not the same as the previous offer.

The previous offer was the Black Sapphire for $1199, MRP $1699.
This features Sapphire Crystal glass and 32gb memory, meaning all the maps are pre-loaded.

On sale now is the Slate Steel version for $999, MRP $1599
Only 16gb memory, so you need to choose what maps to load.
    Screen is still Gorilla Glass.

I've had an EPIX 2 for about a year now, and it's awesome. Would recommend it to anyone who is into sports, fitness and outdoor adventure.
I use it as a bike computer when cycling, and for climbing, running and hiking all the time.

    • Thanks, I'll fix that up in the description.

    • As the current Fenix 6X owner, I'd be interested in an Epix 3X at around a grand some time in the future. I'm mostly using it for indoor weight training and prefer the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic for my day-to-day smartwatch need, so not in a hurry.

    • Does the Epix 2 cope with rowing??? I have a Venu for simplicity, but it doesn't cope with HIIT Rowing. I hate chest straps because I have a barrel chest and they shit me to tears.
My previous galaxy watch sucked at rowing and swimming and died 2 mths after warranty.
My previous Suunto sucked at swimming laps and died 2 mths after warranty.
The Garmin is the only one that has survived > 2 years but sucks at rowing…

    • Hows the battery life ? I end up with Fenix 7x solar over the modern oled display. Wish Garmin release an oled , solar and torch on their watch. Very useful on my evening walks so the bikes can see me on the share paths.

  • Thanks Op, got a 245, have been eyeing fitness watches recently and this deal was perfect!

  • Will this allow me to download a Spotify playlist on the 245 and go for a run without my phone?

    • yes, that's correct.

    • you will need a spotify premium account however

  • I mainly want this for music to BT headphones. Can you transfer a playlist to the watch or does the playlist have to be created on the watch?

  • I have not received this deal from jb hifi, even though I am subscribed to their perk deals. Can someone please send me a coupon to be used, if they are not using it.

    • +2

The codes are generic, listed in the deal.

  • +1

Anyone know if the FR245 has kitesurfing activity profile?
Also, can you use it with YouTube Music instead of Spotify?

    • +3

I'm currently on the 745 and also a subscriber to YouTube Music. To my disappointment, there's no support for YouTube Music yet. I've used free trials for Amazon Music and Spotify which you can also consider!

      • Thanks heaps for the info! Bummer it doesn't support YTM :( I have access to Amazon music for free (from Prime) so that would be better than nothing I guess:)

        • Is it just me or has Prime Music changed to only allow you to listen to playlists shuffled? I was able to access some of the music before and not others, but it's changed for me a few weeks ago

          • @Jackson: It could be, personally I've never used it as I've been with YouTube Music for years.

I know I have some access to it (because of prime membership), but not sure what are the limitations when compared with the pay tier and how they would work out (or not) with this watch

    • +1

      https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/General/Kite…

Though it wasn't accurate for me when tried 6 weeks ago

      • Thank you for that! Even if not very accurate, it would be awesome to have some reference! I'll definitely give it a go
And can you also use this watch to record where about you've been riding and see that in a map with speeds etc? I would love to have that!

        • +1

Yep, tracks via gps your location, speed, heartrate etc. The elevation when kiting is useless (unless using an app(

  • Does this mean JB might eventually start stocking the 255/265?

    • +2
    • its not a smart watch. Its a fitness watch.. Some people really use those features that arent found on a $200 smartwatch

    • Don’t forget they are exercise tracking devices and if a $1,000 smart watch gets you more active than a $1,000 analogue watch, it’s probably not such a bad investment.

    • That beautifully crafted timepiece won't warn you your blood pressure is elevated. They have literally saved lives. Perhaps you should get one.

      • Thank you for your concern, I have a Samsung smartwatch, great for fitness, monitors my heart rate consistently and it wasn't anywhere near $949.

  • I love the look of the Epix but I really only need a ‘smartwatch’ and wouldn’t use 95% of the features/capability. I’d only use HR, sleep tracking, GPS, music, and phone notifications etc.

That being said, any suggestions for similar looking watches with less functionality?
    Cheers!

    • the other watch in the OP, the 245?

  • White 245 looks pretty weird.. any chance of getting discount for black one?

    • Didn't get one for the same reason. Initially I thought I can change the band but the white face does not go well with other color bands. After some research I came across this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOUNGtDvVis) where the white face was paired with a darker band. Looks weird to me.

      • Just get a protective cover that's the same color as the band

        • Good suggestion! Did not think of this one.

    Any deals on Vivomove sport?

  • How is the GPS on the 245 for phone-free running?

    • YouTube review say it's pretty good when it works except sometimes have to wait for a connection or need to restart the watch.

    • If you are wanting a GPS running watch and have not owned one yet then this would be a very good watch to try. It will do more than needed for the majority of runners.
Re GPS connection issues, I’d be surprised if that hasn’t been resolved with software updates by now.

      • I was thinking of pulling the trigger and your comment held me back.
Without a phone, these GPS watches don't work well? I'm looking for a watch mainly to avoid having a phone with me when running.
        Thanks

        • +2

You're over thinking it. The FR245M works perfectly without a phone. GPS is all on the watch. Music on watch.

          • @ausremi: Thanks. I had one from Garmin 6 years ago (Vivoactive something), and it took ages to have GPS data without a phone, that's why I worried

        • I use mine all the time for running, sometimes GPS takes about a minute to start locating, but that's the worst of it. Never had to reboot it, always tracked an accurate run when looking at the map afterwards. Such a great buy for a first fitness watch.

  • +1

The lack of Garmin Pay is a shame. Got a basic fitbit for my daughter and she uses the payment option all the time, especially for school tuckshop when the phone has to be in the locker, or when just out and about and decides to shop.

  • +1

thanks op got one for the gif

  • +1

    Mother’s Day sorted, Thankyou OP

  • +1

I finally have fallen on my sword with regards to buying a Smartwatch to track my runs. Personally this will be my second watch purely for running, so really appreciate the heads up on this as the discount makes it relatively cheap considering it will only be used occasionally. Great deal and great find! Thank you
