  • Does the second gen pencil die if left too long inactive? My first gen died this way.

    • +1

Both my 1st and 2nd gen was ok though when I left it out too long.

    • +1

It can still happen. I bought a secondhand one that arrived dead, was advised it had been off charge for several weeks. That said, one of my own was left off for probably even longer than that and was fine.

      • All batteries can die in that way.

        • We had a gen 1 go without charging for week over a year without issue. I suspect if you leave it already fully discharged and then leave it for a long time it could lead to battery failure, but a few weeks or a month seems like it's manufacturer problem.

          • @Felixrising: but if the a month leaving as fully discharged after using 1 year is quite…… possible. not all I think 10% of pen would die / last less than 30 mins

    • +1

Perhaps, but the magnetic charging on the side of my Ipad means it's never far from 100%.

    • My first gen died this way.

      This one?

      • Is that like what happens inside jv's mind .. that prompts your OzB comments!!??

if your first gen apple pencil is dead because of inactivity
you can go and get a battery replacement in Apple store (they most likely will give you a new one) for $45

      • Thanks for sharing this. Curious, if anyone has had success with this? I went to a MyMac store and they said nothing could be done.

When you compare it like for like for other styluses it is competitively prices. It detects the pressure you draw with, it detects the tilt of the pencil which is useful for fine shading. It doesn't have a button but if you tap the pencil it'll let you switch to the last used tool, or other functions depending on the app. The pencil also has minimal delay between drawing and the line appearing on the screen. And charges magnetically.

      • And gestures and hover.

        • +1

Yeah. Hover was long overdue, should be a basic feature of a stylus imo.

        • A pencil that hovers for $158 . That is unreasonable.

    • +1

Sounds like you haven't used one. I never enjoyed drawing/designing until I used an Apple Pencil 2 on an iPad Pro. There is no comparison. I also use it for signing forms (saves me having to print out a document to sign it and then scan it), marking up PDFs, handwriting recognition (convert to text), note-taking/mindmaps, and precise photo editing.

      • Adobe has a free app on Android. You can use that to mark up PDFs and sign them as needed.
Of course this pencil does a lot more, but just highlighting that there are other options for PDF markup than buying a stylus.

    • +2

Completely agree. I don't really care if it technically is a good retail price because a mere stylus being that price is such a scam

    • create art worth millions

    • It's not a 2B pencil…

      • -1

You are right it. It is a 'trying' 2B pencil.

  • Damn, I bought one from Apple two weeks ago. Does anyone know whether I can get a pricematch at Apple and get some money back two weeks later?

    • Only if your credit card offers price matching protection.

      • They have this? How do I check if I have it?

    • +3

If less than two weeks ago you can refund it and just buy one of these now instead.

  • Which one of you stole my Apple Pencil 2? I had to buy a new one.

    • -2

      3 apps.. so extensive.
Let me go pay 158aud to have access to 3apps πŸ˜„πŸ˜

    • Absolutely love GoodNotes. I use it constantly for a bunch of things, it’s a fantastic replacement for paper notebooks.

  • Harvey Norman and Domayne have also dropped their price to $158

  • thank you, OP.
    I purchased two.

  • Thanks op got one, and yes so much better than the $30 generic I had haha, $158 worth.

Will be a bit sad if a gen 3 announced soon..
