Am I the only one that finds "free for donation" things silly, I can also get a free big Mac at McDonald's with a $6.60 donation

If it was free coffee with purchase of cookie sure but it's a donation directly to the charity and not to the cafe or McDonald's in your case. And coffee is around ~$4+ usually.

Nah, you are not alone. I find it silly too

My guess it’s to doge tax, ie. GST so more goes to the charity. They’re not selling you something, you’re making a donation and just happen to be giving you something at the same time.

Not sure how the ATO would feel about this…

      • what makes you think it's inherently illegal?

They can claim deduction very legally.

What stops a plumber doing the same? Give me $200 as an early birthday present and I’ll just happen fix your blocked toilet so I don’t have to charge you GST and I won’t have to pay tax on the “present” you gave me.

          • @PainToad: Reason for the vote down? Too hard to actually form a counter argument?

          • @PainToad: errr, you actually still have to because it forms part of your assessable income lol. Should you get audited ATO cares more about the idea than the actual transaction itself lol.

All i'm saying is, businesses use these "charity" to claim deductible, which is legal under our tax regime.

This is not free, you are paying for a coffee, they are just choosing to give that money to charity. If you got the coffee regardless of the donation, then yes, that is free.

Can get a better* coffee for $1.50 at any coles express (every day, even public holidays)

    • hit the 'strong' button on the machine
    • The machine doesn’t charge extra for strong/extra shot?

      • +2

Nope. The ones at Coles let you choose between weak/regular/strong without altering the price.

    • You should have read where the money goes before commenting.
100% of the donation goes to Chris O'Brien Lifehouse (a cancer hospital)!

  • how's the coffee?

  • +1

Coffee at just $1 would be more honest.

I still pay $1 at Metro Petrol, and free with my seniors card at some places
