I believe that this is the first time this kindle has been on sale!
This is the kindle with the largest screen, 9.7" diagonal, which makes reading an absolute delight.
Best of all, this device has free, global, unlimited, lifetime 3G so that you can download books at any time or surf the net (it's not ideal on Kindle but it's pretty good.)
This is a 1 Day deal from Amazon so don't miss out.

You've got to go to a specified page to get the deal shipped to Australia, so here are the instructions:

  1. Go to the product (use this affiliate link or the one at the top): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002GYWHSQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?…
  2. Scroll down to "Live outside Australia"
  3. Select "Click here to see important information specific to your country."
  4. Select "Australia", then click the "this separate page" link
  5. You're set

Pretty niche product in my view. Larger screen for dual pages / text + image, but very few textbooks available.

Might be good for those with vision problems? Rather have a Kindle 3 + cheap android

  • +1

Good deal. but isnt it a discontinued model?

  • +4

Depends what you read. Most of my books are PDFs, which simply aren't suitable for the small Kindles. The Kindle DX is the only e-ink reader that makes sense for me.

  • +1

It's got a bit of weight with its size - ~535grams compared to ~246gms for the kindle keyboard.

And less than half the battery life of regular kindle too.

    • a lot lighter than an iPad, though

  • +1

I bet comics and manga would look good on this.

    • +2

Comics are pretty much unreadable on 6" Kindle, so the extra screen estate does it great justice.
But the price increase is massive going from 6" to 10"
Wish they came up with a slightly bigger version (8 inch or 7.7 inch).

      • Yeah manga on my Kindle 3 is just readable and zooming is a pain.
        Can't really justify a $281 manga reader though :(

Can somebody tell me how does ”free global unlimited 3G" work ?
Does Amazon have a tie up with every mobile provider in every country ?
    Curious to know.

    • I believe our model has vodafone uk sim embeded. You roam on whatever network vodafone uk has a roaming agreement with.

Free International roaming is handy but browsing the web is not easy with these things.

    • +1

It is no longer unlimited. There's a *50MB 3G cap when accessing from outside the US.

      http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/amazon-kindle-50mb-limit-…

EDIT: *Well, for the experimental browser and sites besides Wikipedia, Amazon and Kindle Stores

  • +1

Are you sure you can surf the net on this? The video makes it sound like the 3G connection can only be used for the Amazon store. (As opposed to the Kindle 3 with built in experimental web browser)

    • yes, you can but the browser sucks

  • That's a very useful link! It also allows me to buy a white Kindle Keyboard 3G for my friend. She was upset she missed out on the half-price Kindle deals at Woollies and was considering paying standard retail price AU$219 but with this, it's under $200 and she can get the white one she wants. No dealing with third-party shipping companies either.

    Thanks!

I'd love a Kindle DX for viewing PDFs of user manuals (the 6" Kindle is just too small for most PDFs) but still can't afford it even with this discount. Pity.

EDIT: I just noticed Dick Smith are now selling the Kindle 3G Keyboard for $199. It's not white though so I might still buy this one from the USA.

  • Has been US$10 cheaper, but was for a short time only, late last year.

Does not support non Latin based fonts (e.g. Chinese). Pathetic.

    • It does.
I read English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese ebooks on it.
The only problem is that some Japanese/Korean/Chinese characters of the book name might appear as squares in the home page. The contents are fine.

      • so, it means that wikipedia is wrong.

        • +2

Which shouldn't be surprising at all…

I think 3G is a waste or battery and time!

    • +2

      waste:
"to consume, spend, or employ uselessly or without adequate return; use to no avail or profit"

It does consume more battery but it does NOT waste battery.
You exchange battery life with the convenience of 3G.

It does consume more time as you spend time on 3G internet on top of ebook reading.
You exchange your time with the pleasure of browsing the internet.

Since you got adequate return, it is not a waste (according to dictionary….)

Last black Friday, it was $259.

  • I prefer Kindle or 3 than DX (I got all of them). DX is too heavy to carry. And Amazon charges you for "pushing" anything from the cloud storage to DX. But it is perfect if u got lots of PDF to read.

    • Agreed on the PDF aspect.

Looks like a clearance sale… for discountinued model

    • But it will no longer be e-ink screen?

Btw does anyone know how the DX performs with large PDF's does it struggle?

      • Pretty good, even excellent performance when dealing with scanned PDF files. I got one and quite happy with it for reading.

    • I was about to get DX, thanks for your information, I'll still wait then, cheers

    • The author ignored the very fact that DX , in its first place, wasn't made for the mass. It's for an niche market. A 10-inch Kindle fire isn't really as exciting as the author puts. There are heaps of other 10-inch iPad like devices around Kindle fire won't be the best and after all, they are not eink which is precisely why people , who enjoys reading, will buy Kindle-non-fires. I personally can't stand reading on LCD(or whatever you name it) screen for longer than 30 minutes , no matter what's the size.

      • I think you need to so some more reading to improve your grammar.

        "in its first place"
        "an niche market"

        • who cares? LOL! this is not a grammar school but thx anyway. BTW, u had a typo yourself, hope it's not a grammar problem

    • That's what I thought when it was on sale last April. Time proved me wrong

If you are thinking about buying a kindle, I recommend you try it before you buy it. I thought that it'd be great since its so lightweight and portable. However, what I found was that it removed from the experience of reading. You'll miss the page turning, the smell of the pages, the ability to easily flick back and forth from one page to another. I bought one and didn't enjoy reading on it. If you're interested in buying it off me, inbox me. It's the 2nd generation model. I barely used it, and comes with original cables, manuals, and box.

Yes it is still best to read an actual book. But when you have hundreds of pdfs and you do not want to print them out, Kindle DX is the best option available.

  • This tech is old and rumor has it that they're announcing the new kindles this week.
