The update Eve Energy with Thread is on sale for A$55, which is pretty common, but there is also a 15% off promotion when you buy 2, bringing the price down to $46.75 each.

This is a HomeKit device, but because it speaks Thread (and will be updatable to support Matter later this month), as long as you have an Apple device to INITIALLY put it on the Thread network, you can then pair it with Home Assistant afterwards if that's yer bag.

  • AU?

    • From the image, could also be China… 🤔

I was referring to the title. Should be Amazon AU, Au

        • Got it.

I was, uh, referring to country of manufacture… 😑

    • AU?

      Me ?

  • Would it be possible to extract raw data from these. Ie. If I wanted to work out for tax purposes what the cost of running the back office power outlets/ charging my car is. Also, something like how much to charge someone for power renting a spare room (obviously would need to be on its own circuit)?

HomeKit won't have access to history. The Eve app does have some history features. I use it in HomeAssistant, so I have statistics stored in perpituity.

The problem with using it for a spare room is you'd have to have the entire room running off the one plug. It has a 10A limit.

    • I don’t know for sure, but I doubt these would be able to handle the amperage of charging a car

      • Granny chargers only suck up to 10 amps. If you do have a variable evse that goes higher than 10 amps then it would have the larger ground pin and won't fit on the standard plug, or have a 3/5 pin plug.

        • I'd like to know this too. I have a Meross switch capable of 10amp, but is it 10amp sustained? A lot of electrical equipment isn't designed for sustained use but with duty cycles in mind. My EVSE goes up to 10amp too, but don't really want to run it at 8amp and take a 25% hit on charging time.

Meross Smart Plug allows your to enter kwh price and calculate spend based on usage

      • Yes, I was looking at it as well, but the power monitoring version is the non-HomeKit version and does not have Matter support
i.e. the Meross Smart Plug with power monitoring feature cannot enter into a HomeKit environment (by itself)

@frkino i have created a shortcut to control it from Siri to Google assistant for on demand use, I am using it with room fan heater which i need to turn on / off on schedule if home kit use is critical than its not suitable for you.

      • The Eve does the same from the Eve app.

  • How do these Ev Energy compare to these Meross plugs https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08DTT3LQZ/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0…

      I'd say there's two angles:

      1. Eve stuff is pretty highly rated, and correspondingly expensive. I haven't observed the same level of satisfaction from the Meross plugs.

      2. The Meross is WiFi, and the Eve is Bluetooth/Thread. Before Thread, I'd say avoid (BT range sucks), but Thread, like ZigBee is a mesh, so the more you have the better it works, and the Thread/BT/ZigBee stuff IS NOT on your IP network, so no hacking concerns.

      • Thanks

      • The other big difference is these Eve devices are useless if you don't use Apple

  • eve door sensor is also on sale. Still double of what I’m looking to pay for for a door sensor

    • +1

Yeah, I find it hard to get past the value of Aqara stuff for all of those little various sensors (contact, motion, temp, etc.)

      • I tried one Aqara product, the camera with the built in hub on it and I don’t think I’ll consider it again. I tried blocking an area on the camera app to try and it permanently blocked that area on view even after several hard resets. Saw similar experiences so I got traumatised :))

        • I’ve admittedly not gone past the Zigbee sensors, and I don’t even use their hub. It’s a lot easier to cover your home in temperature, door and window sensors when they’re only A$15 each. They’ve performed perfectly.

      • I love Aqara. I use it with Home Assistant.

The little buttons are amazing. Can program functions for single and double presses, and hold. And they’re so small!

  • Am i reading this right. To migrate these to Matter and use them on Google devices you need an Apple device? https://www.evehome.com/en-us/upgrade-to-matter

    • +1

You will definitely need the Eve app (iOS) to upgrade the firmware. My reading of that page, is that if you want to use the device in HomeKit AND another platform, it seems to imply that you need to add it to HomeKit first, in order to use the HomeKit UI to put it in pairing mode.

However, once it's upgraded, and you have a Matter code, I don't see why you can't directly add it directly to any Matter controller. Unfortunately, I can't run the HA Matter beta, so I haven't been able to personally test that yet.

Update: I've just updated one to Matter, and ironically, now I CAN'T use it in Home Assistant. Before doing so, I could at least use the Home Assistant → HomeKit Controller integration and control/view it over Thread, but now I have to wait for better Home Assistant Matter support. I would definitely NOT recommend these if you don't have anything Apple. You'd be swimming upstream, and I'm pretty sure there are plenty of non-Apple-dependent alternatives.

      • Damn

Thanks for the detailed response and going through the hassle of updating. Looks like I'll be putting these up for sale somewhere or trying to return them

      • Once the firmware has been upgraded I should be able to connect to them using Google devices though, correct?

        • Not an area I have experience yet, but my understanding is if you have a Thread Border Router that Google can connect to, you should be fine. That’s the point of the standard.
