So really it's up to 4.05% off? Activation fee is a nice little rip.

    • +8

I think someone at Westfield is having a laugh, because if you purchase a $50 Westfield EFTPOS gift card through this deal, the gift card will still cost $0.95 more than its face value (and that is before factoring in any Visa/Mastercard surcharge charged by ALDI).

      • +1

Aldi website says no extra charge by eftpos or cash

        • Activation fee has nothing to do with payment surcharge at checkout.

  • Be careful with expiration dates, they don't give any leniency if you are past the expiry date of the gift cards.

    • +1

Who would give leniency? It is their take for getting people buying gift card.

  • +3

I did not realise that ALDI sold Westfield EFTPOS gift cards! Maybe I should visit ALDI more often…

    Anyway, a couple of thoughts:

    • I do not know how long it will take for Westfield to activate a gift card once it is sold during this deal. In my previous experience of purchasing these at Woolworths (over a year ago), the gift cards were not activated until either later the same business day, or the morning of the next business day. That means if you purchase this on a Saturday morning, the funds may not be available on the gift card until the following Monday morning. Hopefully things have improved since I last purchased Westfield EFTPOS gift cards…

    • Westfield EFTPOS gift cards can actually be redeemed at merchants across Australia that accept prepaid EFTPOS gift cards as a payment method. The redemption of Westfield EFTPOS gift cards should not restricted to just Westfield shopping centres (even though that is a commonly-held belief).

    • Interesting, so do you think you could use them at Aldi, though possibly not on the same day?

      • It’s a big unknown.

        • I have no idea if ALDI’s payment systems are capable of automatically blocking cards based on BINs (bank identification numbers).

        • If you have an ALDI staff member who sees you swipe a card on the EFTPOS terminal, they may stop the transaction until they are satisfied you are not trying to use a prepaid gift card as a payment method.

        • Additionally, Westfield could set up their payment systems so that any payment requests for $95.95 from ALDI stores during this promotion are automatically declined. You never know. That would suck if you were trying to pay for groceries at ALDI during this promotion and the amount owed happened to add up to $95.95…

        • +1

In the past it's been approx 1.5 hours for activation. I've used Westfield cards at ALDI before with no surcharge. The ALDI system does block ALDI gift cards from purchasing other gift cards.

          • @JIMB0: Yes, only report what you can't do, not you can do in your logic.

          • @JIMB0: Did you specifically mean only ALDI-branded gift cards? Their own website says that "Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase other Gift Cards" ( https://www.aldi.com.au/en/about-aldi/customer-information/p… )

Anyway, it would be good if ALDI accepts these Westfield gift cards for EFTPOS payment, and without any surcharge/fee.

            • @dlee: I know someone who works there. They said a guy tried to buy a gift card with an ALDI gift card and the system wouldn't allow it. The Westfield gift card is accepted with no surcharge as it's EFTPOS.

              • @JIMB0: Ah. So "ALDI gift card" means "ALDI-branded gift card/issued by ALDI", not "any gift card sold at ALDI". I understand now.

    • +1

time to get on the Spirit?

  • +5

Paying $50.95 for a $50 gift card is not a deal. The $100 gift card has more merit.

  • +3

Plus you need to factor in the surcharge charged by aldi as WookieMonster stated in the above comments,

  • +1

Bought a $50 Westfield GC from this deal $2.95 activation fee, said can be used in Westfield wide and any other retailers with eftpos except some

  • Not worth the effort IMO.

  • +1

    Not worth it for $4.05

  • +1

Paying money to use money that you have already paid for….what a joke

  • +1

Wait. What? Is this "activation fee" a new thing for gift cards? So you end up buying date-limited, surcharged, unsecured credit and pay an "activation fee"? Nice little rip-off they got going on there.

  • So $100 card costs (paid by cc):

    (90 + 5.95) + 0.48 surcharge = $96.43

    About 3.5% discount

    • Buy it with bloody cash .

      • +3

I'll buy it with my Coles MasterCard's, like everyone else!

        • -3

          hacked Coles MasterCard

        • Smart of them to not discount the activation fee. Hopefully Coles doesn't catch on and do the same with future promos of their GC.

        • Picked up 2x $100 and paid with a $250 Coles Mastercard this morning, no issues. Shame that the Coles MC is so prone to hacking, otherwise it's arguably a better card as can for online purchases vs the EFTPOS card.

    • +2

Using hsbc 2% cash back for each card will give back $1.92 and in this case cost would be $94.50 about 5.5% discount

  • You could stack the discount from Coles Mastercard prepaid and go to Aldi to to buy Westfield. So it would be:
Coles Mastercard $90+$5 activation fee. You earn 200 flybuys = $10 Coles credit
Use the Mastercard and buy Westfield gift card and earn 3.5%.
Total discount is 8.5%. I just bought a Dyson V10 using the Mastercard prepaid CC to buy physical JBHiFi gift card at Woolworths. I tried to stack it with discounted gift card with NRMA blue and BUPA but they won't accept the prepaid CC. So I only save an extra 5% but got the Dyson for $645 after using the welcome perk of $10. So after the discount it will cost me $645-$32.25=$612.75~

I'd say not too bad when considering it was already discounted from RRP ~$1000 to $699 and then to $613.

Edit: Damn I could have done that too and earn another 3.5% discount bringing the Dyson sub $600. Too late I tried it out already

  • EFTPOS cards i.e. ones with logos on it have no surcharge. Westpac debt card has no surcharge as well. If you have an enable visa card on iphone you can opt for "EFTPOS SAV" as default payment.

    • That's interesting. If I use this Westfield eftpos card at ALDI, do I have to SWIPE and then enter the PIN (I assume I cannot tap/pay by NFC)? Also, after swiping, do I select SAVINGS instead of Credit?

      • Actually, I'm asking about how to use this Westfield gift card anywhere, not just at ALDI. Is it something that needs to be swiped + PIN, and what do I select (SAV or Credit)? Thanks—anyone who knows!

      • Just looked on a card I have. It swipe and SAV and pin.

        • Ah thanks. Just hope that it works at most other places too, because the Westfield web page warns that some merchants may not accept prepaid gift cards. Why would that be, I wonder? Isn't money just money?

          • +1

@dlee: The problem is that no one can know for certain who is the legitimate cardholder of a prepaid gift card, and there is no way to verify who that is.

The purchaser of a Westfield EFTPOS gift card (for example) does not need to provide 100 points of ID before purchasing it, and their name - or the name of the recipient - is never recorded against the gift card at the time it is issued. That means that when you go to a merchant and attempt to use the gift card, the merchant has no idea whether or not the gift card was:

            • purchased using stolen funds (e.g. stolen cash, stolen credit card, stolen debit card), or
            • paid for using cash as part of some convoluted money laundering scheme, or
            • stolen from the person who originally purchased it or received it as a gift, or
            • legitimately purchased and is being used by the cardholder.

At least for a debit/credit card, the cardholder’s name is recorded on the card, so a merchant can simply request for ID if they are feeling unsure as to whether the debit/credit card belongs to the person who is attempting to use it.

  • Does anyone know if this prepaid credit card will have the same "dangers" as the Coles Mastercard—-I'm not entirely clear about it, but people have talked about the credit card numbers not being secure?

    • +1

Westfield EFTPOS gift cards do not have as many dangers as the Coles Mastercard gift card for one very good reason: you cannot use Westfield EFTPOS gift cards for card-not-present purchases (which includes online purchases).

The issue with the Coles Mastercard gift card (and really any other prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift card) is that they can be used at any merchant around the world that chooses to accept prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift card. With that in mind, someone guessing and checking multiple combinations of card numbers, expiry dates and CVNs can check these at many merchants around the world, so it is only a numbers game until that person finds a merchant that does not block someone after making too many unsuccessful payment attempts.

The kicker is that you do not always have to provide a CVN in order to process a payment at some merchants, which means people guessing and checking multiple combinations may only need to guess the card number and expiry dates. Considering there are a limited number of expiry dates (because InComm produces Coles Mastercard gift cards in batches) and InComm does not employ the same sort of fraud detection systems as a traditional bank to analyse whether a transaction request seems unusual, that is how you end up with heaps of Coles Mastercard gift cards being used at “massage parlours”, TikTok, Google Play, etc without the cardholder’s knowledge or permission.

Meanwhile, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards can only be redeemed for card-present transactions (aka in-person transactions), so it does not suffer from the aforementioned problems with prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift cards. In other words, if you cannot redeem an EFTPOS gift card online, you are not going to have the same problems as prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift cards.

I will mention though Westfield EFTPOS gift cards are not completely immune to fraud. Two examples:

      • I dealt with an OzBargainer last year who had $490 fraudulently spent on their $500 Perfect EFTPOS gift card at a merchant they have never visited, and this transaction took place a couple of months before they scratched to reveal the PIN on their gift card. After they assured me that their gift card was not stolen or used by someone else, I strongly suspected either a freak error happened at the gift card issuer (where their gift card was mixed up with someone else’s gift card) or someone stole the gift card from Woolworths, duplicated the gift card and grabbed a copy of the PIN before returning the gift card to Woolworths and waiting for the OzBargainer to purchase the gift card. This is far more sophisticated and laborious than simply guessing and checking card combinations on a website…

      • Someone once reported that a random person stuck the gift card activation barcode of a different Perfect EFTPOS gift card on top of their Perfect EFTPOS gift card, which meant the gift card they paid for and activated was not the one they physically got from Woolworths.

      • +1

Thanks very much for your wonderfully detailed response. There is a wealth of information in there—all very illuminating. Fingers crossed that all the different card issuers can put their heads together to find some way to better secure their cards against fraud, otherwise we consumers suffer!

      • +1

hey wookie, did the OzBargainer who had their Perfect EFTPOS gift card fraudulently spent manage to get a reimbursement from the card issuer?

        • +1

They only got a reimbursement after lodging an AFCA complaint.

They were lucky, because they had an older Perfect EFTPOS gift card where it was issued by Indue, but that type of Perfect EFTPOS gift cards is really hard to find these days.

The Perfect EFTPOS gift cards shown in this week’s Woolworths catalogue are all issued by Blackhawk Network, which does not show up on AFCA’s website, because they are not a member of AFCA. If the problem I mentioned before happened on one of those Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, Blackhawk Network would probably wash their hands of the issue.

  • I got two and notice the expiry date is 06/23 - one month left.
    Watch out.

    • GC should be valid three years from date of issue and not a pre-determined expiry date.

    • The two I purchased today have an expiry of April 2026, which is in line with the gift card terms and conditions (i.e. three years from date of issue), and I saw this expiry date on the balance check website.

If you saw the June 2023 expiry date on the balance check website, I would suggest contacting Westfield for assistance, because that is not normal.

Out of curoisity, does the balance check website show the funds credit date (aka the date of issue) as today?

      • +1

Yeah, the expiry on my card is also April 2026, as expected, 3 years from date (month?) of activation.

  • I used eftpos card (bought from Woolworth) to buy this morning, it was ok, i went again this afternoon, eftpos card is declined, I think ALDI stopped this loophole too.

    • +1

Inception with the westfield cards worked 1 hour ago..

Westfield card didnt activate straight away.

      • Perfect EFTPOS from Woolies worked as well 2 hrs ago.

        • +1

EFTPOS gift card worked for the 1st transaction for 2 cards , then failed the 2nd time for 2 or 3 cards. Not sure why but seems like it declined after 1st transaction

    • It worked 2 hrs ago. I bought it with a physical item.

I bought a few on Wednesday and almost no one bought it in my local store after that, according to the stock level.

      • You can just buy the cards. As long as you don't buy 5 cards it will be fine.

        • Does that mean you can’t buy 5 cards in 1 transaction?

          • +1

@kelasen: Maybe the above reports are right. I made two purchases for two cards each time, without knowing such issue. I always prefer to be on the conservative side.

Considering people said it did not work on Coles PMC, this EFTPOS card may decline a big purchase over $200 easily.

            • @Neoika: Ok makes sense. How about 2 separate transactions of 2 cards each as it will be below $200?

              • +1

@kelasen: That's what I did, without knowing such issue.

                • @Neoika: Perfect. I might try that tomorrow and revert.

              • @kelasen: I tried this today with perfect EFTPOS and the 2nd transaction was declined, not sure why

                • @hoyanikon: Because your total number of cards attempted to purchase is more than 4.

            • @Neoika: You can buy 4/2+2/1+3/3+1/1+2+1, as long as the total number is less than 5. And it is the same even if you use 2 different perfect Eftpos cards.

          • @kelasen: Doesn't matter how many transactions. You just can't buy 5 within a short period of time in a single store. Not sure about different checkouts, you can give it a try and let us know.

            • +1

@truetypezk: Same store, same check out, perfect eftpos card declined and used normal bank card, it was ok to buy all 5 card at once.

              • @R n b: Blackhawk will decline the transaction if you try to put through a large amount at supermarkets. Just do 4.

                • @truetypezk: No wonder i tried to pay for 5 cards yesterday but declined and tried for 1 card abd it was accepted. So from now onwards im paying 2+3 cards. Thank you.

                  • @R n b: 2+3 won't work. You can only do 4 unless you are talking about having a break in between.

              • @R n b: So it is a setup by Blackhawk to limit big purchases at one location in a short period. The amount over $200(or higher figure) is very likely not a grocery purchase.

                • +1

@Neoika: But in Costco specially $400-$500 easily i spend as i can buy bug bulky and costly things ie alcohol, clothing, jewellery, appliances, electronics etc… blackhawk should not limit, time ti complain with them….

                  • @R n b: Have you experienced the same issue at Costco? I am not aware of that. I think they are only doing it at the 3 major supermarkets and sometimes Auspost.

    • The issuing banks have tightened up on instore giftcard redemption in the last week. Westfield inception at Aldi wouldn't be worth the effort for $4.05 a card. They can't even do split payment.

      • Sorry, but could you explain "issuing banks", and "inception"? The issuing bank of the Westfield GC, or do you meaning something else? Are you (and the others above) talking about buying the Westfield GC using EFTPOS cards?

In terms of savings, some people will still find $4.05 worth saving—-if they buy the Westfield GC with cash, not a credit card or any other card—-I think? I got lost reading the last few comments above (I didn't understand what the fuss was about).

  • +1

I tried to buy a $100 card using my perfect eftpos card but it didn't work. I wasn't able to pay at self checkout either so had to wait in line again.

    • Thanks for the report. Aldi does not allow gift card purchase at self serve.

Make sure choose "Saving" after swipe. I used a card that was bought a few weeks ago. Maybe due to too recently activated issue?

  • I tried to check my balance and it says "invalid card details" . Hopefully this means my card hasn't been activated yet. How long has it taken for others to show up on the website?

    • I think it is about 1-2 hours during usual business period, but much longer out of it. See here.

    • +1

I had the same message the first time, until I realised I had entered the PIN rather than the "Reference number" at the back of the card… not sure if you made the same mistake?

  • Thanks, that's a relief. Lots of stock at my local Aldi in Carnegie, VIC if anyone wants some. Can people let us know what places you have successfully used it in. Has anyone tried Costco?

  • I tried again at Aldi Bentleigh and the perfect card worked for payment so it may vary by store. Unfortunately, it looks like I got the last $100 card.

    • The next person trying to redeem a perfect card would have got declined.

      • Is that how it works? Every other one gets declined?

    • How many Westfield cards u pay for at once???

  • +1

If using Coles Mastercard Gift Card to buy these is their a fee ?

    • +1

      O.5% credit card fee.

    • Go to Woolies first to get the $500 perfect eftpos then use it to buy the westfield cards.

  • So I went back to Aldi and bought a few things, paid with my westfield card so I was very happy.
