@WookieMonster Can these be used to buy the coles MasterCard gift card and vice versa

    • +8

In terms of using Perfect EFTPOS gift cards as a payment method at Coles for Coles Mastercard gift cards, I honestly have no idea what the situation is right now.

I have not used a Perfect EFTPOS gift card to purchase a Coles Mastercard gift card since the October 2022 deal, so I have no idea if Coles has blocked it recently.

Additionally, when I tried using these at Coles over the past month or so (both on purchasing other gift cards and grocery items), some payment requests were approved and some were declined, even though I had sufficient balance on the Perfect EFTPOS gift card every single time and I selected Savings and entered the PIN correctly. I know a few other OzBargainers have seen similar errors, so something strange is going on.

I think it is safe to say that Perfect EFTPOS gift cards are currently an unreliable payment method to use at Coles.

In terms of using Coles Mastercard gift cards to purchase Perfect EFTPOS gift cards at Woolworths, it worked last month, but again, I honestly have no idea what the situation is right now.

      • I tried using it last week to purchase Coles MasterCard with EFTPOS gift card from WW, transaction got declined

      • Sorry to hijack this, would you know if I can use this to buy Woolies branded gift cards in store?

        • +4

          Woolworths

If you have a Perfect EFTPOS gift card starting with 502125, I highly doubt it. When I tried to purchase a WISH gift card using such a Perfect EFTPOS gift card in late 2021, I triggered an Items Not Allowed error, which is where Woolworths is refusing to process the gift card. I’m not sure whether the block is still in place, but I strongly suspect it is.

If you have a Perfect EFTPOS gift card starting with 638947 (which is the version pictured in the catalogue and is most likely the version available at your local Woolworths), I’m not actually sure, because when Woolworths selling such Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, there were no blocks at all, which meant you could even purchase Perfect EFTPOS gift cards using Perfect EFTPOS gift cards. Blocks were only introduced on some gift cards a number of months later, and I have no idea whether Woolworths decided to put in blocks when trying to purchase Woolworths Group gift cards.

          BIG W and EG Ampol

It should be fine using any Perfect EFTPOS gift card as a payment method for Woolworths Group gift cards at these stores, as these stores are less likely to implement blocks than Woolworths. However, this is something I have not ever tried…

The only blocks I have ever trigged at these stores are:

          • BIG W: attempting to purchase an OnlyONE Visa gift card using an OnlyONE Visa gift card.

          • EG Ampol: attempting to purchase a WISH gift card using an AmpolCash physical gift card. (As a side note, it looked like Ampol - the gift card issuer - was declining the transaction after I entered the gift card PIN, which surprised me. I do not remember what the error was, but it was something along the lines of the goods being ineligible for purchase.)

I don't think so as i tried it last month when I tried to buy coles master gift card / coles Myer group gift card

However I can use it to buy restaurant choice gift card

So I guess 3Rd party is not impacted yet

      • Good to know

  • Related, but slightly off topic, - it does work the other way around…ie buying a Perfect EFTPOS card with a Coles Mastercard works at WW did it a few days ago

    • +1

      ohhh nice nice

      • Less than a 2% discount on $250 Perfect EFTPOS cards though, so hardly worth (especially considering these can't be used online).

    • can you add a perfect eftpos to card shopback ?

      • +3

No it's a physical EFTPOS card only can be used by swiping

        • Safe for inconvenience. It is like cash if one loses It.

  • +3

So it seems at max you get less than 3.50% discount for the biggest card ($17.05 of $500), at the cost of carrying a separate card which may or may not be used for purchasing other gift cards, and maybe other limits.

Thanks OP for the effort but it does not seem to be a very attractive deal to me.

    • +1

      Nope

Last time with Mastercard I had bonus 10x points in my flybuys, so it worked out to over 10% savings.

But i aint dropping $500 to save 3.5%! its more effort to keep track of these discounts than the saving but i know some people go to extreme lengths to save $70 from 2k saving :|

  • 3.41% discount on the $500

  • 3.41% profit … less than the Coles Mastercard

    • The profit is lower than the interest rate so better keeping the cash in the offset account

  • +6

Btw they make money from people like my mum. She got me $100 GC FUEL for christmas…and paid like $6 or whatever for the fee. Im like why would you give me $100 which cost you $106?
I dont understand people at all! Just give $100 cash!

    • +1

she could mean you want to drive more ;)

    • +9

She knows if she gives you the cash you'll just spend it on soda pop and orange sherbet, or whatever it is the kids are wasting their money on these days.

      • +1

Yep Nan always gave me $100 for Christmas and said spend it on whatever you like as long as it’s not beer. That’s why I drink so much rum!

    • +1

It’s the idea you need to give something physical for it to be a gift. It’s silly. It takes time but my family all know me as very annoying to buy presents for and do give cash. The flip side is I also do not receive gifts at times where I may have if I was known as appreciating physical gifts haha.

    • -3

You generally cannot ship CASH. i think its not allowed to be shipping CASH straight up

  • Can u buy woolies egift cards from their discounted portal with these?

    • +2

No, because the gift cards in this deal only operate on the EFTPOS network, and Woolworths Online does not accept EFTPOS as a payment method… and that is pretty much because EFTPOS can only support card-present payments (aka in-person payments).

  • -1

woollies doesn't understand maths I guess.. who in right mind set invest $500 to get $3.41% discount when banks gives you around 4.6% … lol… :)

    • +1

The only reason I posted this deal is because I believe the loophole it's still there and you can buy discounted gift cards with this for further savings. However I am not sure if the loophole it's still there. I can't see a reason not allow you to pay with this cards, there are EFTPOS cards so it should be allowed.

      • +4

I also use this deal to get Qantas FF points, and earning towards Qantas Points club

    • +12

Who in their right mind holds onto these, they are not an investment.

To get 4.6% you need to keep your money in the bank for an entire year

To get 3.41% you can buy and spend this card in the same day.
That's equivalent to 1,245% per year.

      • If you need to $500 same day then your calculations work but most people buy this to pay for council, electricity, health insurance fees which you are paying for 1 year in advance so doesn't make sense at this rate…. Coles deal is far superior…in my opinion.

        • +3

That's true but you also need to consider tax.

The interest you earn in your $500 is taxed at your marginal rate so you get less than 4.6% in your pocket.

The 3.41% has no tax impact.

          • -2

@spaceflight: Definitely you can add tax to Saving rates but then add hacking risk to 3.41% card while cash in bank 100% guaranteed upto 250k … 😂 .. lol

            • +1

@SydBoy: Can't hack these cards. Can't use online

              • +1

@benwaffle: They can be cloned and used in-store. They're also susceptible to barcode tampering.

                • @JIMB0: Yes, JIMBO was tampered to another similar looking name.

                • @JIMB0: Can't all cards be cloned? Would still need the pin inside.
Barcode tampering is when they replace the barcode with another gift card right? I've only heard of that being done overseas.

These seem like high level hacks rather than the online mastercard brute force hacks

                  • +1

@benwaffle: Correct they need to have had physical access to the card and any spending needs to be done instore where there are cameras, so much safer than visa/mc giftcards. There was a report on here about barcodes being replaced. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11047931/redir

                  • @benwaffle: the point being that there is no guarantee on the money you put in to the gift card while bank deposits upto $250k guaranteed by Australian government…. not sure why keep arguing with the facts .. lol … :)…. 😂

      • +1

More accurately, we should not count it as done in the same day. Better to consider the time you before you finish spending the $500.

        • That's correct if you don't have plans to $500 straight away at another shop as this can't be used online as other said above then don't use it…

Also remember many physical shops do have 2% discount gift cards available at shopback so why tied-up your future spend at Woolworths only unless you are converting it to QFF ?

      • There is no tax on this 3.41% & it's instantly.

        • I know, I even said

The 3.41% has no tax impact.

    • 4.6% taxed at marginal tax rate so only really 3% and that is per annum. If you had to buy something tomorrow for $500 you would be getting an instant 3.41% discount as opposed to having to hold onto that $500 for 1 year to obtain the interest. If you bought this card and held onto it for 1 year, then yes, it would be a bad investment.

      • Plenty of card left in every Woolworths I went even today… That says it is dumb deal and not buying will only send message to woollies to stop making fun at the time we have high inflation and high bank savings rates

  • No extra fee when use in Aldi?

    • +4

No fees at Aldi as its a SAV transaction.

P.S. I'm associated not working there so no hard questions please.

      • Thanks.

      • so what do you do at Aldi?

        • Someone I know works there and I can get info from them.

          • @Sheng: can you find out when they will have 10% off Amazon gift card?

            • @Poor Ass: According to him. It wasn't popular and there are cards still in the office untouched. He doubts they will do it anytime soon as well.

              • @Sheng: Nah bro all stores I went sold out

  • I guess its a good way to convert some coles mastercard to prevent hacking.

    • -1

So you saying we can use Coles MasterCard to buy this eftop cards at Woolworths… ?

    • +1

Why not buy Westfield giftcard in your store?

      • +1

You mean up coming? 50-100 denominations only with active fee + surcharge.

        • Sale from 26th.

          • @Neoika: Do both. Go from the mastercard=>perfect then the Westfield cards. Save the 0.5% Aldi CC surcharge as well.

            • @truetypezk: The real trick is getting it back to perfect.

              • @JIMB0: @JIMB0 - Im assuming there must be an intermediary step ? - i.e. Westfield to some other card, then that card to Perfect.. for me at least haven't had time to investigate fully but havent been able to do Westfield back to Perfect - get an invalid product mix error straight up

                • @cheapfab: I dont think Coles has blocked any eftpos gc from being purchase any gc. However the card issuers have probably put a limit on how much can be spent at Supermarket in a short period of time. I think it should be fine buying just a 250 card.

              • @JIMB0: IIRC eftpos gcs can still be used to purchase non-cash equivalent gcs at Woolies? Maybe wait for the nexg Ultimate cards sale and use these $100 cards for that.

                • @truetypezk: To my surprise it didn't work during the last ultimate sale at Woolworths.

  • +1

I have not received the 20x points from two weeks ago. Has anyone got it yet? How to contact them?

    • The Everyday Rewards Contact Centre: 1300 10 1234

  • Limit of 5 cards per transaction and one transaction per day per Rewards Member. Card images shown may vary.

Did you perhaps copy this bit of text from a previous deal? Because, interestingly enough, the terms in the catalogue don't actually mention any transaction limits this time. It just states that there is a "Limit of 5 cards per day per Rewards Member."

    • Yes mate, that's what I done. I couldn't select the deal on Woolworths catalogue to get the terms and conditions and I assumed are the same.

      • Ah, I thought that might be the case. Hopefully this means they've scrapped the silly one transaction per day limit for good.

        • I am still trying to select the item on the catalogue to get the terms and conditions. Not working. I guess I have to wait. Unless there is an other way to get them?
Yeah hopefully they scrapped that silly rule.

        • the silly one transaction per day limit for good.

It's to drag people ass back in the store so that they can says "oh I may get that junkie since they're 1/2 price". It's a good business model.

        • +2

Nah just tried this evening, no good. No 10x bonus rewarded after the first transaction was done.

          • @feihong: Bizarre. Next week's promotion also has no mention of transaction limits so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out as well.

  • +1

My local post office recently say no to this card when I tried to pay my bills

    • Mine too. Very annoying.

      • Which state you in? My friend in QLD she told me work, but some other said no

        • WA. It worked last year in October. Not so lucky this time around.

    • Use self service counter, still working.

      • Can you do split payments?

        • Not a problem at all.

      • which self service are open? All seem to be shut at all the post offices I go to

    • Same story with Coles gift MC, but tried different post office and it was accepted.

    • -1

Worked for the Coles MC, but I learnt it from the hard way of you can’t go immediately to the Aus Post after buying the MC from Coles

Gotta give it a few hours to activate the balance

    • Same for mine, even tried to hide the card, back when churning Westfield XS gift cards to pay your credit card was a thing :)

  • -1

Can anyone confirm 100% if these can be used to purchase the prepaid Mastercard from coles?

    • Coles has closed the loophole already, so you cannot use them to buy Coles Mastercard gift cards. It was mentioned multiple times in other posts.

      • Thank you, haven't kept updated with the closures, appericate the comment!

  • These and any activation fees are a rip off… running at 12% for a $50 card. Dubious.

  • What if I have a payment terminal e.g Zeller which charges 1.4% fees. you can instantly cash out and gives you around $12 profit. Did anyone try this?

    • +1

Probably a ban in place from Zeller. Pretty sure someone tried to it something similiar but that was a promotion from Zeller themselves.

      • And the ATO might also be interested in knowing what you're putting through that terminal.

  • Can I use these for Sniip or directly with ATO?

    • You cannot use these prepaid gift cards on Sniip nor directly with the ATO, because these gift cards only operate on the EFTPOS network. Neither Sniip nor the ATO website (nor Government EasyPay) are able to accept EFTPOS as a payment method… and that is pretty much because EFTPOS can only support card-present payments (aka in-person payments).

    • You likely can use it to pay ATO accounts at Australia POST offices you'll need the payment reference numbers etc

  • Has anyone had any luck buying gift cards with a gift card?
