  • Only if you can find any.

    • $100 denomination is not preferred for 10% off deal. Thus, there should be some if not many left.

    • +1

Only $250 cards are limited during the 10% off period.
This is 2000 points, so I assume you easily get as many as you need.

      • maximum of 5. anything above 5 and you won't get the FlyBuys points for those.

        • no one will prevent u going back and forward into coles multipletime. but with only $5 off after fees, i pass. not worth for the troublesome

          • @jhsun74: I agree. I usually buy these cards but this reduced deal just isn't worth my trouble.

    • +1

Yeah that's for VIC & TAS different offer.

  • +6

2000 points for both? So better off getting the $100 card?

    • 2000 Bonus Flybuys Points with $100/ $250 Coles Mastercard Gift Card.

for this, the $100 is better.

      10% off, better go $250.

back-to-back offers on these cards. i am guessing they are dis-continuing the cards as many people have had problems checking the balances on these cards. also reports of fraud on these cards, zero value even when they have not been opened.

  • That is better deal $100

  • +1

Didn't expect to see two promos, back to back in qld, on these cards!

    • +1

Now that Cole’s have locked out the public that isn’t flybuys members they can afford to run these more often

  • +1

Is it a limit of 5 per day or account?

    • +2

      @nickl1986

Per account ( so only 5 total for catalogue week)

  • -1

    Remember it $104.50 at checkout.

    • So you’re effectively buying $10 worth of Flybuys for $4.50. For anyone wondering about the maths, that’s 55% off

      • +1

no. you are getting 2000 FB points ( which is $10 ) for purchase of either denomination cards.
        if you buy $100 card, you pay $104.50 - $10 = $94.50
        if you buy $250 card, you pay $257 - $10 = $247

        • Exactly right. So you’re effectively buying $10 worth of Flybuys for $4.50 (55% off) in the first instance, or $7 (30% off) in the second. Obviously 55% off is a showstopper of a deal, but 30% off ain’t too shabby neither

    • +2

      Isn't it $100 + $5 = $105?

      • +1

Might be right actually. $4.50 was always associated with 10%.

  • +2

I struggle to see how is this a good deal! Paying more than what the card actually is for and get 2000 points!?

    No

Does it count towards Flybuys bonus points?
    No

    • +4

It worked for me paying with coles gift card when they had 10% sale. Just make sure gift card covers the cost of the mastercard at the self serve checkout

      • Interesting…
Did you buy giftcard by itself or combined with groceries as well?

I had a mix success when combined with groceries.
Some gift cards went through, but never full amount

        • +6

I bought the $250 superswap gift card on shopback (with a coles mastercard) then swapped it for the coles gift card. I went to a self serve checkout and scanned one gift card without groceries and went to pay. Coles staff needed to authorise it and when they walked off I chose gift card as payment and used the coles egiftcard on my phone. I repeated 2 more times as I could only add 3 mastercards initially to shopback.

          • @attalisie: Can I use my $250 Coles Mastercard Gift Card to buy a superswap gift card on Shopback? If so then I can convert it to a Coles egift card and not have to worry about the Mastercard Gift Card getting hacked.

            • +3

@Chris T: Yes you can! Keep in mind you can only link 3 cards to shopback. I'm not sure how long you need to wait before you can add more cards, possibly a week? I've been allowed to add more cards now on shopback and that's 8 days after the first 3 were added. You can also link your mastercards to paypal and then use them on prezzee to convert to ww or coles cards. Also, I had no problems using mastercards directly on card.gift to buy the grocery gift card. I then used the grocery gift card to buy a ww gift card on the ww portal to get 4% off

              • @attalisie: Thanks for the info. I had no trouble adding two Coles Mastercard Gift Cards in Shopback (on top of two other non-gift cards already in Shopback), and I used them to purchase Super Swap Gift Cards of equal value. When I started the process of removing a card I got this message:

Are you sure you want to remove this card? … Any pending Cashback and progress towards loyalty rewards on this card will be lost.

So I aborted removal and I suppose I need to wait until the cashback is paid before I remove them.

                • +2

@Chris T: I remember reading about that a long while ago in a post on Oz bargain and from memory someone said it was fine to remove the mastercard. I have removed my first 3 but I already have the approval of the bonus $5 x 3. Maybe just wait a few days for approval before removing just to be on the safe side.

              • +1

@attalisie: I had a go at converting to a WW egift card on giftcards.woolworths.com.au (with 4% discount using RACQ membership). First I tried direct payment with the Coles Mastercard gift card but that failed with the message:

Something went wrong. Our system is temporarily unavailable.
Your card hasn’t been charged. Please try again later.

The failure was not unexpected, and I then tried the suggested alternative method of linking the Coles Mastercard gift card to PayPal, then using PayPal as the payment method. However when I went to pay I got this error:

Check your account with your card issuer before trying this card again.

The purchase failed to complete, but the payment amount is showing as a pending Paypal transaction on the card. Hopefully that will be released within a few days. Then I might try your card.gift grocery gift card method!

You can pay with Coles giftcards. I've tried it two weeks ago.

    • It works with Coles gift cards.
Done it many times and works everytime for me.
I asked a cashier, she said it's only works with one gift card and can't use mix payment.

      • +2

They've stopped it now. I just tried today paying the way it worked a week ago and it definitely didnt work. People in Vic with current 10% off promo are also reporting it's not working for them either :(

    what is the actual discount for the $250 one? I assume ($18.7/$250) * 100% = ~7.5%
    Is this correct?

    • this deal is better for $100 card, simple counting is save $5 (2000 FB points = $10 - $5 fee)

    • Halve your 7.5%. $250 card costs $250+$7=$257 and you get $10 worth of FB points (nominal value i.e. actual value to you may vary). So you have to spend another $10 to use the FB points.
      So, $10/($250+$7+$10)=~3.75%.

    • You are making $3 on $250 card…pay $7 fee and get $10 Flybuys points…making 1.2%..hardly worth it. The $100 card is better…make 5%.

    • no. you are getting 2000 FB points ( which is $10 ) for purchase of either denomination cards.
      if you buy $100 card, you pay $104.50 - $10 = $94.50
      if you buy $250 card, you pay $257 - $10 = $247

  • Provided by Latitude Financial Services?

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/apr/15/coles…

    • +5

      No.

Coles Mastercard gift cards are a Coles-branded prepaid gift card scheme owned by InComm, and they were first introduced in June 2022. Heritage Bank has been contracted by InComm to handle the financial administration of the gift cards, which explains the reason they are listed as the gift card issuer (and is also the reason you lodge any AFCA complaints in regards to the gift cards against Heritage Bank, not InComm).

The article you linked to is in reference to Coles Financial Services products before 2018, when GE Money (and later Latitude) issued and operated Coles Financial Services (CFS) products (e.g. credit cards, personal loans). Coles switched to Citibank for CFS products in 2018, which is currently owned by NAB.

In regards to the older Coles Gift Mastercards (the Coles-branded prepaid gift cards that stopped being issued in June 2022), that was a prepaid gift card scheme owned and operated by Indue. I am not sure whether Latitude / GE Money was ever involved in them, as Coles-branded prepaid gift cards seem to never have fallen under the CFS umbrella.

      • can you still collect regular flybuys points with these?

    • +1

No, Latitude just provide your license details on the Darkweb

  • +2

Please correct me if I am wrong. The previous deal has 10% off with no 2K flybuy points but this deal has no 10% off

    • Basically, different checkout prices.

      • 10% is off checkout price. = $94.50 at checkout.
      • 2000 points is a "reimbursements" for a full purchase in 2 days. = $105 at checkout.
    • It would be better deal to have both 10% off plus 2K bonus points

      • +2

it would be a better deal if you can get the cards for free.

  • Where can I use Coles Mastercard Gift?
    * Retail purchase?
    * bpay?
    * pay my ATO tax?
    * pay my credit card?

    • +2

Use it at places you'd rather not have slow up on your bank statement incase the misses questions it.

    • +5

      Retail purchase

Generally speaking, yes, as long as:

      • The merchant chooses to accept prepaid Mastercard gift cards as a payment method. For example, some online merchants check cards for 3-D Secure support, which is something prepaid Mastercard/Visa gift cards cannot support. Additionally, Coles automatically blocks you from using Coles Mastercard gift cards to purchase some gift cards in their stores (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift cards, Coles Group & Myer gift cards). Finally, if an in-person merchant sees you are using a prepaid gift card as a payment method and chooses to reject it, you are out of luck.

      • You are not trying to used an automated fuel dispenser at a service station (e.g. the fuel dispensers used at Costco).

I will mention there are some merchants who cannot (or will not) let you use multiple Coles Mastercard gift cards in one in-person transaction.

      BPAY

You can link a prepaid gift card to a Sniip account and then send payments on Sniip to some (but not all) BPAY billers. Payments being sent from a prepaid gift card will attract a 0.85% card surcharge, which is payable at the time of sending a payment.

      Pay my ATO tax

Currently, you can make payments from Coles Mastercard gift cards via the ATO online portal (accessible via myGov) or through Government EasyPay.

AFAIK, you cannot make any ATO payments at Australia Post using Coles Mastercard gift cards, because my understanding is that the ATO only accepts cash, EFTPOS SAV/CHQ cards and cheque (plus it requires you to have a payment slip with a barcode on it, which in my experience is hard to do).

      Pay my credit card

I cannot think of a way you can realistically do this.

If I knew of a method, I probably would not write it on OzBargain, because:

      • I am basically writing a guide for someone to go ahead and close a loophole.

      • My private messages would be flooded by OzBargainers throwing rotten tomatoes at me for publicising (and possibly ruining) a loophole lol

      • I was trying to use it to pay council rates at auspost in person but was rejected…the lady insisted that you can't use this to pay any bills..I'm so confused as I swear I've seen a lot of OzBargainers paying their council rates/bills at auspost…

        • +1

This one might be trickier as some councils might reject a payment / treat it as an attempted credit card payment.

        • I have done it online.

        • +2

          There are two explanations:

          • Your council does not accept Mastercard (or Visa) as a payment method when you pay in-person at Australia Post.

          • Some Australia Post staff have been trained to stop anyone trying to use prepaid gift cards as a payment method for bills or gift cards at Australia Post, but other staff don’t know (or don’t care).

Considering you say the staff member insisted you cannot use them to pay any bills, I suspect the latter explanation is applicable.

          • +1
          • @WookieMonster: if you use these cards to pay your Council fees, the credit card surcharge will show up in your NEXT bill.

            • +1

@J-T: True, but that is only if the council charges a fee for paying via credit card at Australia Post.

              • @WookieMonster: no, you will incur fees if you paid your Council bills online or via telephone if you used a credit card. as long as you used a credit card or debit card, sixteen digit card number starting with 4 or 5, the surcharge comes up next bill. try it.

                • +1

@J-T: I pay rates at 3 councils. One charges fees on CC's the other 2 do not.

                • +3

@J-T: You are assuming that all councils across Australia applies surcharges for payments, which is incorrect.

Let’s look at a couple of examples to see why that is a bad assumption:

                  • Brisbane City Council mentions a payment surcharge throughout their entire Pay Your Rates page.

                  • Hobart City Council does not mention a surcharge at all on their How Can I Pay My Rates? page. When I paid one of my relatives’ HCC rates at Australia Post last year using Coles Mastercard gift cards, I had a look at their next rates notice and did not see a surcharge for using a Mastercard. On top of that, when I checked the last rates notice I paid myself, there was no mention of payment processing fees or surcharges anywhere on the notice. You would think that a council applying surcharges to card payments would at least mention it on their rates notices or their website so you would know before making a payment?

As I will once again point out, you will be only charged a surcharge at Australia Post if the biller chooses to apply a surcharge for you paying via Australia Post.

                  Additionally:

                  • NRMA Insurance has never charged me a payment surcharge for paying at Australia Post using EFTPOS SAV and Visa.

                  • Origin Energy charged me a payment fee on my next utility bill when I once used EFTPOS SAV (not Visa/Mastercard) as a payment method at Australia Post. When I queried Origin about this, a rep told me that regardless of what payment method I used at Australia Post, the action of paying through Australia Post incurred their Payment Processing Fee on my next bill(which you can read about here). Origin also explained to me that I would have also paid an additional Card Payment Fee on my next bill if I opted to pay using a Visa or Mastercard at Australia Post instead of EFTPOS. These payment fees are spelled out on their bills, so it was not like I was not warned before payment.

      • Good man not saying the loophole but believe me some1 will .

  • +2

So it's essentially a 5% saving on a $100 gift card? Not sure if worth the hassle tbh.

    • +1

      4.76%

      • +1

Also you're more likely to engage in wasteful spending when trying to use up the remaining balance just to bring it down to $0.

        • +3

I use up whatever few dollars are left at self service checkouts. $4.76 left on the card? Split the payment on your groceries. No wasteful spending.

        • or just split the payment at the registers - 32¢ from 1 card, $1.50 from another etc. There's no need to have specific spending to get it to $0

          • @monarocv8: If doing this at Woolworths best to use the ones that accept cash as well.

As the card only ones can be temperamental and need staff intervention.

            • @snappy1234: @wavesgreen is it possible to split payment to purchase gift cards?

              • @ggggg: I've never attempted it personally but I believe you cannot.

              • +4

@ggggg: It depends on the type of checkout you go to.

                • Coles’ self checkouts only allow split payments when purchasing gift cards if you insert cash first and then you opt to pay the remaining amount owed on one EFT payment method (e.g. a debit/credit card). If you press the Mixed Payments button, you will get an error message, and staff cannot override this limitation.

                • Coles’ standard checkouts (i.e. the checkouts operated by a dedicated staff member who packs your groceries for you, or the service desk) are able to do split payments when purchasing gift cards, but this is at staff discretion (and also assumes the staff member knows how to do split payments).

    • well, the whole idea is to use these cards with online merchants who you think to be dodgey.

if they stole your credit card details, the maximum you can get hit is the value of f the prepaid card you used.

  • +2

I still have 3 cards ($300) from last promotion blocked by card issuer for suspicious behavior and still not received replace ones.
Not worth the hassle for 4% off only.

    • As a small time gambler, I agree - very bad return for risk/hassle!

      • well, the whole idea is to use these cards with online merchants who you think to be dodgey.

if they stole your credit card details, the maximum you can get hit is the value of the prepaid card you used.

        • Good idea. I took the gamble. I tried to buy 5 but 2 had activation declined. Cashier said ring customer care. Customer care said cashier should have processed a refund & to go back to the shop. I am looking forward to seeing the points result on my flybuys account.

          • @Peck: I had 1 activation declined. The store processed a refund to the credit card. They told me they had 5 declines in 1 day. I had this happen a few months before and was issued a returns card which can only be used for groceries so not as good as a refund to CC.

            • @Yola: I received a full refund on the 2 declined cards, but still got the 4000 points on them! Kah-ching!!

  • WTF going on with Coles . Always excluding VIC .

  • +4

Seems like Coles may have now stopped payment via e-gift card when buying gift cards.
Got an 'invalid product mix' for the first time at self checkout - I used to always pay this way

    • OK

    • No way. Is it for all?

      • +2

Just tested for all gift cards. Payment not acceptable. Haven’t tried using a Cole and Myer card yet.

        • Thank you for your service.

        • Tried with Coles and Myer GC at 2 stores did not work.

    • +2

Confirming payment via a physical Coles/Myer gift card failed for me today. Always worked previously.

      • Thanks for the report.

  • I would use the flybuys points from this to purchase bunnings or other useful gift cards you cant usually get at a decent discount. Unless of course you shop at coles a lot to use the 10 off spends

    • Buy 5. Get 10,000 points and swap for $50 coles supermarket gift card to pay for future groceries.

Actually, do you get 1x base point for each card too? So that's another 525 points?

      • Sometimes Flybuys offer discounts on redeeming points on other GC's.

  • Damn they closed the loophole where you could buy MasterCard gift cards with MasterCard gift cards. What will I do on my lunch break now 😞
