Just in case there is anyone new to these prepaid gift cards, here are some tips (and I will link out to the Gift Card FAQ page where possible):
Coles Mastercard gift cards are sold without a PIN for in-person purchases, but you can set one later if you want.
Some online merchants will not accept these prepaid gift cards as a payment method, but there may be workarounds.
Prepaid gift cards are generally more susceptible to unauthorised transactions than a debit/credit card, so the recommendation is to redeem them ASAP (e.g. bills, other gift cards).
The pre-authorisation charge may be 120% of the original transaction value.
Make sure to carefully to check the packaging for any evidence of tampering. Someone recently reported 2x Coles Mastercard gift cards for sale at a Coles were actually duds.
Not that easy to tamper with the physical card to get those numbers, without tearing the packaging. Must be a professional
Is there a way to view pending transactions/authorisations on these gift cards? e.g where the amount has a random number of cents that you then have to fill in, or the transaction description has a random code on it.
You can log in to check the balance of the gift card, and pending transactions that were successfully charged to the gift card will appear on there, including the amount and a portion of the transaction description. I think the balance check page will only show a limited number of characters, but if you call the phone number on the back of the gift card and eventually navigate your way through to a human, you should be able to get them to read out the full transaction description… assuming staff understand why you are calling.
Thanks very much!
I once bought some Only1 gift cards, probably from Woolworths, and eventually found when I got around to using some of them ($100 value) that several of them had been used to buy goods at a Bunnings I think in Victoria and I live in WA.
After complaining to the company and submitting a written report to them I got several new cards posted to me. But it kind of helped that it was in a different state, not sure what would've happened if it had occurred in the same state in Oz??
