Good price, but the cost per GB is still better for the 1TB version: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/768821

    Same price at BPC: https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/skc3000s-1024g-kingston-k…

The number of M.2 slots is more valuable than the cost per GB. When you max out your M.2 slots and want more space, then you waste the existing 1TB drive in the slot when replacing with a 2TB.

  • Can anyone suggest an enclosure to go with this? Planning to use it with a Mac with USB 4 as an external drive.

    • USB4 NVMe enclosures are still around the $250-300 price point. Do you need up to 3 GB/s transfer speeds, or is 700 MB/s sufficient (USB3 enclosure)? The USB3 enclosures, you can get them for about $20-50.

      • Thanks, yeah definitely don’t need the USB4 speeds as I don’t do any video work. But I’m hoping for something a little faster than the standard Samsung T7 SSD write speeds at similar pricing to it.

        • T7 has out of cache speed around 300MB per second, so it's not difficult to beat it speed wise; though most nmve drives run much hotter than the t7.

I have a PM981 in Hikvision 9210B case. I'd describe it as touchable, borderline burning temperature when large data is written. From a comfort point of view the T7 wins

        • You're better off getting a solid gen 3 case and then just using this drive as regular m2 when you have a need for it.

        • Due to the USB 3.2 gen 2 limitation and Mac Apple Silicon doesn't optimise well for USB 3.2 gen 2 backward compatibility, it is unlikely you will get much performance gain.

          • The USB 3.2 gen 2 performance drop (due to protocol conversion) is about 25-35% in random read/write.
          • USB 3.2 gen 2 only supports PCIe gen 3 x2. No matter what kind of SSD you put in the enclosure, it has to operate in that mode.
          • You might get some write performance benefit (if you write a lot of large files), but it is still a waste.
          • An ordinary PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD in a Thunderbolt (or USB 4) enclosure will easily get better performance than putting a high end PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD in USB 3.2 gen 2 enclosure.

If all you are after is USB 3.2 gen 2 performance, there is no need to get PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD. There is a reason why external SSD makers don't put high end PCIe gen 3 SSDs in USB 3.2 gen 2 drives. They do put in quality SSD in USB 3.2 gen 2x2 and Thunderbolt external SSDs.

    • I have this one https://www.acasis.com/products/acasis-usb4-0-mobile-m-2-nvm… I bought it from the AliExpress site. I also have the Kingston KC300 2TB, an getting great performance on the Mac M1 Studio..

  • nice, this is actually fast enough to work with the PS5!

  • Hrm once you factor in shipping the 2TB is a similar price to the Samsung 980 Pro 2TB from Amazon (though that's an international order so will likely be slower and may not honour warranty). I'm not sure which is better. https://www.amazon.com.au/SAMSUNG-Internal-Gaming-MZ-V8P2T0B…

    • Samsung 3DV6 NAND is known for data integrity 0E issue under normal use. This issue results in data loss. The 3DV6 NAND is used in 980 Pro, 980, 970 Evo Plus (2021+), 870 Evo and newer EVO series SD cards.

I'd err on the side of caution and go with Kingston. The 3DV5 (970 Evo, older 970 Evo Plus), 3DV7 (990 Pro) are OK.

      • Is that a different problem to what the recent update fixed?

        • I'm not sure if (or if not) 3DV6 can be fixed by firmware update, from what I gathered it's likely a CMOS circuit design issue <- I could be wrong here.

I have 3 drives + 1 MicroSD that has 3DV6 in them, none had any 0E issue so far. Though with knowledge of their higher failure rates, I just use them for back ups, and watch for SMART 0E events closely.

          • @YRT: Thanks, I ordered one of these and will start being more diligent about backing up my 980 pro 1tb and 980 1tb.

  • fast drive, 1TB cheap! I paid 135 not long ago

  • Copped 1TB model, thanks OP.

  • Just curious, did anyone's order come through as a 512gb instead of the 1024? It was late when I ordered but definitely remember adding the 1024 to cart. Also originally added 2x and then removed one before checking out. Saw tax invoice today as the 512.

Could've been my sleeping brain. But just curious.
