There were 3 deals for this projector however back then there was not information about it due to being very new.

Finally we have a good source for Review - and this projector is a beast!

Review:

https://www.projectorscreen.com/blog/Hisense-PL1-Ultra-Short…

What We Liked
- The compact format,

  • The price

  • The fluidity

  • The contrast

  • The settings options

  • The smartTV functions

  • The precision of the image

  • The colorimetry

  • Input lag

  • Dual Dolby Vision and HDR-10+ compatibility

What We Didn’t Like
- An average light output after calibration,

  • Unnecessary dynamic contrast

  • An operating noise bordering on acceptable

One of the few projectors in the market with Dolby vision. Unfortunately there is no 3D.

You DONT need a ALR to pair it with.

Just grab a elitescreen master yard 2 that comes with a UHD cinewhite 1.3 gain for $400 and you are good to go. I have the screen and it is light, easy to build and portable.

Dont forget the cashback!

Not quite the best price is been, but for $2k it's fantastic!

Helped a mate assemble an alr screen he bought off Ali Baba (I think) for well under a grand, and even with the windows open it's bright enough at 100".

    • Considering the cashback, yes, that is the cheapest.

      • $1995 at jb before Christmas. Rather get it from a brick and Mortar store , and jb dropped it's price from it's catalogue then too, YMMV of course, but thanks anyway .

        • Mine was $1985 with cashback and shipping lol

          • @Dienk: Before Christmas was $1950 without needing cashback.

            Lol?

Not trying to be some weird competition you've made this.

My first comment was advocating for your bargain you posted.

            • +1

@teereb: Not sure why you got so annoyed with a "lol".

              Cheapest posted here was $1995

              • +1

@Dienk: Nah not annoyed man. Was just saying in person you could get a better deal, without the cash back even. You posted a good deal. Not having a go at you.

Just wondered what made you lol is all.

      • With Easter5 $2180.25 at JB so yes, best price as list time was just under $2k.

OP - where do you get that elitescreen master yard 2 screen for $400?

    • +2

      Here

Elite Screens OMS120H2 Yard Master 2 Outdoor Projector Screen with Stand, 16:9 Aspect Ratio, 8K 4K Ultra HD 3D, 120 Inch https://amzn.asia/d/cFbFFyf

      The 100" is same price.

      • If you don't mind me asking, how long does it take to assemble it? I'd need something for regular assembly / disassembly at different locations

        • +1

How often do you need to do so?

Check this vídeo out from 3m25s

          https://youtu.be/HzJBuQSTTng

        • I would say around 15-20 minutes to build and 10 to disassembly

      • Just wondering bud did you receive the projector yet and if so how does it look on this screen. Cheers.

        • +1

Still waiting to receive it. I am upgrading the screen as well. I am getting a visualax Gray 110" for $435 shipped.

          • @Dienk: Cheers bud same here might have to wait until end of May apparently. That screen is that through Amazon as well?

            • +1

@dins: Mine has been shipped so should be here soon.

              The screen is from here:

              https://www.classaaudio.com.au/169-screen-/1658-visualax-110…

After searching I found out that the white screen is perfect for light controlled rooms (that means black walls as well). I dont have that so the grey screen is the best for room without lights but white wall as it boosts the contrast. I still have the white 100" elitescreen setup (with a benq W2700).

              • @Dienk: Thanks champ similar situation here so if you can do let me know once you have set things up how it goes ie the difference on a wall vs on the grey screen etc. Have a good one bud.

                • +1

@dins: I will keep you posted! Cheers

                  • @Dienk: Hey champ thought I let you know there are some decent quality ALR screens at competitive prices here if you're interested in having a look.

After doing a bit of research placed an order for the 120" XY Screen PET Crystal for $1549 delivered. Quite a hefty price for a screen I must say but from what I've come across apparently one of the best bang for buck ALR screens out there for USTs.

                    • +1

@dins: Interesting website. I heard about them but I did not know they ship to Australia. Nice screen you got! Just make sure the hisense's throw ratio is within the range from this screen you got.

Considering the 4th picture from this screen the hisense's throw ratio is bigger than displayed here (hisense need 42cm from the wall vs 34 showed here on the link)

                      https://nothingprojector.com.au/products/nbl-alr-pet-crystal…

Unfortunately it is way over my budget. I ended getting the 110 inch Grey for $435 however not shipped yet.

                      • @Dienk: Yeah cheers bud I'll probably need a lower stand to place it on. I haven't even received a shipment notification for the projector yet so probably looking at a few weeks wait.

Also do check out their NP screens the 100" is around $700 and the 120" around $1k and you should be able to get $50-$100 off if you ask them for a better price.

                        • +1

@dins: I would need a 110" and looks like they dont offer this size. I will use that only without lights so I can justify spent 2.5x more for the ALR. This vídeo below made me save the money:

                          https://youtu.be/jx6dYwRezAM

                          • +1

@Dienk: "This vídeo below made me save the money:

                            https://youtu.be/jx6dYwRezAM"

Bro that review is done using a LONG THROW projector, you are using an ULTRA SHORT THROW projector. So the LONG THROW screens in the review will NOT behave the same way with a UST projector and you are making a mistake basing your your choice of screen on a review of long throw screens. See my other comment in this thread for a link to an explanation of what makes a UST screen totally different to other screens.

I am highlighting this mistake for you but also so others following your comments wont follow the same wrong path. Cheers

                            • @skysurfer: There is no mistake. The screen is UST compatible period. If the ALR is better? Yeah, may be? 3 times better though? I doubt. If I am spending 1.5k on a screen better getter a triple laser plus a screen such as a L9G for around 4k.

The way you said it, means that a white or Grey screen would never work with a UST. It just needs to be compatible and mine is.

                              • @Dienk: Being labelled 'compatible' is one of those marketing tricks that really means 'it will function' but leaving out how well it will (or won't) work. But if you believe you've got a good deal that's what matters so good luck with it.

                                • @skysurfer: It is funny how you think that "compatible" is marketing but "you must have a 1k alr screen for a UST even without lights" it is not. Go figure.

                                  • @Dienk: You're entitled to your opinion, and to stick to it. Maybe don't try to diminish mine by fabricating a quote from me which I didn't say ("you must have a 1k alr screen for a UST even without lights").

That's my cue to wish you well and stop responding to you. Cheers

                          • @Dienk: Received the PL1H this arvo and only got around to setting it up at night and even with some lights on around the house and projecting onto just a warm white wall it's very impressive I must say.

Definitely much better than what I expected and for around $2k it's an absolute steal for mine. It's also super light and compact so can be easily moved around the house and the SQ is pretty good as well.

I haven't received the screen yet and tbh not sure if it's going to be worth the extra $1.5k but I'll let ya know how it goes.

                            • +1

                              @dins: Good to hear that

  • +1

Can you explain why the master yard screen is a suitable alternative for an ALR screen? My xiaomi ust projector is projecting on to my wall and during the day with the curtains drawn its OK. I've been looking for an affordable alr screen or an alternative.

    • +3

I am not expert but the first I can say is that pretty much anything is better than wall. Wall is not ready to reflect the light and there is micros imperfections on it. Any decent screen (ir means any screen that is not like a bed sheet) is going to address ALL the pixels displayed for your projector. That is why some display are 4k or even 8k ready because they micro refletor like a pixel in a TV. A wall has none of it. There is a lost in brightness, contrast and definitions.

ALR is a must If you need to use that with light in the Room. If you can control the lights, a white screen does the job. There is a reason why the cinema screen is white. Nothing beats it in the brightness and gain. Usually a ALR has a negative gain what boosts the black level but affects the overall brightness.

"There is a reason why the cinema screen is white. Nothing beats it in the brightness and gain. Usually a ALR has a negative gain what boosts the black level but affects the overall brightness."

A cinema has a long throw projector which means most of the light from the projector gets reflected by the white screen towards the audience's eyes, which is optimal for image quality.

An Ultra Short Throw projector sits directly BELOW the screen so if you use a white screen for that most of the projected light is reflected to the ceiling (the angle of incidence = angle of reflection). The viewer's eyes do not receive the main image reflection like they do in the cinema so image quality suffers. Not only that, ceilings being white reflect the light into the room area and light it up, thereby making even a dark room light again and washing out the contrast of the image.

A proper UST screen directs the projected image to the viewer's eyes not the ceiling which addresses both the above problems. A white screen in an unlit room is definitely not the best image quality.

And a gray screen is definitely not as bright as a proper UST screen because it has the same problem of reflecting the image at the ceiling vs at the viewers eyes like a UST screen. UST screens are gray, but gray screens are not UST screens.

Due to the extra complexity of the extra layer on the screen that changes the angle of incidence from the UST projector the UST screen cost significantly more to manufacture. You simply cant get the image quality of a UST screen from a cheaper white or gray screen unfortunately.

If you lot have a completely blacked out projection room..this is an excellent deal with any screen..a perfectly flat surface is needed for a UST because of the angle of projection ..any light seepage may mean you are not getting the best output..for that you need an ALR screen .. If you do not have a blacked out room and have a perfectly flat screen with some light you still get an excellent result.. if you want a 120 inch screen on your wall with this because it is sold as a TV replacement ..that is not quite true..excellent price for a decent UST

  • If you have a dark room.. there are cheaper option available on ebay and amazon in terms of screen.. as long as it is completely dark and a completely flat surface this is an excellent buy paired with a screen it will look like a giant 4k TV

There is some confused info on screens in the comments. A proper UST screen will always improve the image quality from a UST projector regardless of other viewing circumstances (light/darkness etc.), its just the amount of improvement will vary with different circumstances.

For a clear explanation of the facts on UST CLR vs white screen vs wall vs regular ALR you can find it here https://darkenergyscreens.com.au.

    • I am not surprise that info comes from a company that sells ALR screen…

I had to jump on board for that price with the combination of the Cash Rewards.
