    Has anyone used this?

    • Also curious. Anyone got any videos they recommend on how to use?

    • Copy-pasted from when I posted this item a whiles back:

Bought them for $70 a year ago. The stones needed a little bit of work with the flattening stone to get rid of the slightly cupped surface. Since then they've worked well to sharpen my kitchen knives and tools. The chisel guide works well too, better build quality than the ~$20 standalone one I bought off eBay.

    • Yep, works okay but the 1000 grit one is a bit worse than the global knives whetstone it replaced.

last time this deal was posted, someone commented on the low quality. is this still the case?

    • I have used it to sharpen all my knives, no issue with quality

I know these cost more but I went with these given the reviews and commonly recommended entry level whetstone KING KW65 1000/6000 Grit Combination Whetstone with Plastic Base https://amzn.asia/d/fXHbHOh

Have been really good, nice and flat.

These are dreadful. My neighbor bought a set identical to these and it was a real poor man's shoes style product. Unless you have the feather light touch of the angels these'll dish immediately and provide so little feedback you'll barely get a feel for the process. If it's something you're intending to use regularly you're going to be far better off buying the king 250/1000 hybrid stone at the entry level or piecemeal stones and diamond plates at the hobby level.

  • I have been playing with this one for a similar price from eBay.

Certainly made the knives sharper. I think I need more practice to make it better though.

  • you can get this on ebay for 20 bucks

I just use a standard silicone carbide stone. https://aussieoutbacksupplies.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01…
Don't need all this fancy "easy as pie" stuff and the leather belt.

Honestly learn to sharpen a knife on one of these and you will be able to do a perfect job and the stone is good for a lifetime for an average cooker.
Put it on a kitchen towel/paper towel, add a bit of oil and start sharpening away.
Yeah the small amount of oil you put on the stone gets absorbed and will get rancid eventually, but not really an issue because you wipe, wash and dry the knife afterwards anyway.
After a few perfectly sharp jobs, you will get a knack for it and start loving it. I always cherish the time I need to do it again doing it is so peaceful and relaxing.

yeah this is all you really need, can use clipper oil if you don't want it going rancid. personally I just use water.

      • Yeah I was just taught to use cooking oil. The stone sucks it up like a sponge though so I make it sound worse than it is. Over the years I just imagine a bit of oil collected in the middle of the stone that's going rancid. But honestly it's not like it's attracting bugs or smelly or anything. It's perfectly fine.

Always give it a quick wipe with a paper towel when I am done as well to remove any excess oil.

Edit: wanted to add this to the comment above, but it also helps to have good eye sight (or perfect lenses in your glasses). I love looking down the edge of the knife with every break, just to make sure I am doing a good job sharpening the edge perfectly even.

      • Baby oil

Do not buy this, instead buy Shapton Pro 1000. Speaking from experience, I bought something like this when I started learning how to sharpen my knife many years ago. I thought I buy something cheap to begin with, and slowly as my skill improve I will upgrade to Japanese whetstone. How wrong I am, cheap stone like this doesn’t help your learning, it confused you as a beginner, the feedback feeling when you sharpen your knife is all wrong, it’s slippery. After a handful of time I bought a Japanese whetstone, and from there one my skills greatly improved, and I end up binning all this cheap stones. If I could turn back time I would buy the Japanese whetstone from day one. This cost $50.99, while Shapton pro only $70, you better off add $10 and start learning with it.

    • I got the Shapton 1k, well happy with it. Just need to perfect my methodology.
