Apple Watch SE (2020) 44mm Gold Aluminium Case Sport Band GPS + Cellular $297 (Was $447) + Delivery @ JB Hi-Fi

1640

Noticed nobody had posted this one here yet, noticed it as I was looking for something else but was very tempted as it seems like a pretty great bargain if you don't mind the gold colour (I certainly don't), also comes with cream coloured band which is pretty neutral looking to me.

Long-time lurker and first post so pls go easy :)

WARNING: Confirmed this is the 2020 model and not the latest 'SE2' model.

    Great for the kids

      • +3

Perfect for kids security if 40mm is available. Imagine putting a watch with 4G on them where you can track them and be able to call, text, walkie talkie and also enable them with a cheap prepaid Visa card on Apple Pay. All done without the need of carrying a phone.

Not to mention the heart health detection, fall detection and emergency calling all in one little device.

Now you can set it up without buying them an iPhone too, just set it up on your own iPhone if you have one. It’s awesome.

As long as they remember to keep the battery propped up

          • -1

@Nedkellyinthebush: Yes. My kids are trained to charge the watch as soon as they come home. No need to wear them inside of the house. 😂

    • Kid would have a big wrist. JB often has to clear the larger watches. Seems the 40mm is the best seller.

    • Yup. I have the 40mm one for my kids. Very handy when they need to call me and the gps tracking feature os very accurate.

Good deal even if it is the old SE model and not the new SE that came out 6 months ago. Great deal if you’re willing to pay extra with your mobile provider for the cellular access on the watch.

Agree - personally feel this is better value than the Series 7 as it does pretty much everything the 7 does, just don't feel the average punter is going to notice the slightly extra screen real estate of the 7 if coming from nothing

    • How can you tell this is not the latest SE model? Nowhere really indicates this is the old one

      • +1

It talks about it being faster than the series 3. The newer one would say faster than something newer, like the original SE

      • -1

It would have [2022] at the end

        • Find this quite deceptive on JB Hi-Fi's website, I believe they should list these as different products as they use the same pictures when you swap to the space grey option.

          • +1

            @plokm987: How is it deceptive?

Second gen always says second gen

First gen doesn't say anything because there was no second gen when it came out, so it's simply the SE.

            • @TEER3X: Should be seperate listings on the JB Hi-Fi website IMO - currently you get two different gens when you switch colours, implying they are the same thing just different colour when they are not

      • Few ways. No mention of the latest features like crash detection (has fall detection like the old version though). A few of the reviews on JB are from more than 6 months ago, which is when the new SE version came out.

U can just use truphone if you dont want to use ur current provider

  • So this is a good buy?
Keen on an Apple watch for my wife but haven't been keeping up to date with the model changes?

Battery life is important for me. How's the battery life in this compared to other models?

    • +4

Just be warned as outlined above this is the old SE and not the newest one

    • +2

I'd only say 'yes' if you absolutely needed/wanted the cellular version. At JB, the 2022 version of this watch (with cellular) is $529. Be forewarned that most (all?) mobile providers charge extra for adding a smart watch to your mobile plan. I think some MVNOs may not even offer such a plan (e.g., Amaysim does not). Do your research before buying. It's only really worthwhile in my opinion to have the cellular version and plan if you will go places without your mobile phone. As long as your mobile is with you, no need for cellular version and plan. At home, the watch can connect via Wifi.

      • Only Telstra, Optus and Vodafone contracts.

    • Battery not as long lasting as newer models.
But not much diff as fitting into the real world one would usually charge all models daily anyway, even if newer models can do most of the second day.

  • Great if you are on a postpaid plan

    • Why? I think still need to pay $5/month ?

      • its a nightmare for prepaid users who has to signup a postpaid plan which will cost them more then cost of the watch per year (coles yearly prepraid plan is only $110)

Would be helpful to add "2020" version or release in the description to avoid confusion.

    • +1

      Agree - updated now

Surely it’s the new one due to the $447… either that or jb hifi is lying about price reduction. Se2 44mm is $449 according to Apple.

    • +1

It says ticket 447, not RRP 447. To be fair.

      • Yeah just the reduction makes it sound like a great price. All subjective I know but imo not a great purchase due the older chip.

  • +3

Still a good price for the 2020 model. Bought. Thanks OP

  • Doesn't come with a charger?

    • Magnetic charger cable yes. USB-C wall plug no.

      • Ah thanks for clarifying. On the jb website says it doesn't come with charger, was thinking the magnetic charger.

Has anyone hacked these for use on Android? I have tried a number of watches for Android and they are all crap in some way, but all I hear about Apple watches is great. No way I will ever carry an iPhone though, so either I need it to work on Android, or I need it to work on its own. How can I get along with this?

    • +1

I guess if you care about battery life there's no reason you wouldn't use an alternative. I believe currently you have to charge apple watches every day. Most competitors are setting the standard at 7 day battery life.

      • +1

Android watches aren't too different. Pebble was great but they are gone. Mi Band is OK but very limited. I have heard that sleep tracking is excellent with the apple watch, along with fitness tracking, along with additional features like sp02 and fall detection. Everything they implemented from all reports works, and if that's the case I can deal with charging daily.

By comparison the fossil gen 4 I owned needed charging daily, and half the time it was so unresponsive that the screen would time out before it processed my inputs, would crawl with WiFi on, half the time couldn't download a podcast to listen to, and still needed charging daily. Now it's 2 and a half years old and won't charge, and Fossil has no one to speak to in support at all.

      • +1

Seven day battery life smart watches are a lot more functionally limited than an Apple Watch.
Galaxy watches are closer in capability and use case to an Apple Watch. Garmin best for athletes.

    • Poco watch is decent

  • anyone have any photos of what it looks like in person? Thinking about putting a black strap on it but the cost of that may as well buy the 2022 black model for a bit extra

    • Really? How much is the strap you want to buy?

      • Apple retail price for the strap is $69- I’ll just get jb to price match the se 2022 model for $379 and use the $10 perk rewards and buy discounted gift cards to get it down to like $340- only downside is no cellular but only need it to play Spotify music offline

  • Think it’s gone now!
