Sorry misread the listing price $1149 and got excited finally the m1 MBA is below the 1k mark after the $150max afterpay discount.

  • Is this the laptop with the weird SSD setup or ram which ever one it was that was slower on the lower sized model?

    • +3

      No, that's the M2 Air.

      • ah cheers

        • +10

There's no real-world impact for most users, IIRC.

          • @ihfree: You mean checking my emails and browsing the web doesn't max out my system??

            /s

      • Its also the M2 Pro, it has slower SSD speeds than M1 Pro

    • +1

      What's wrong with the M1?

      • +4

        I'm just a layman, but my understanding is that M2 > M1

        • +7

M1 is still faster than like every MacBook before it, even the i7 MBPs.

        • Technically true, but if you're a layman you're unlikely to actually take advantage of any difference in speed between the two and may as well enjoy the cost savings, which you would enjoy.

      • +8

        Because it's not the M2!

I recently swapped to an M1 for work (work laptop, from a 16" pro last generation Intel)

It's miles smoother for my use-case, battery life is insane - I can use it, connect it to a Gigabyte M27Q monitor (Type C no PD, only like 10w) and it STILL charges during use!

Value wise it's hard to beat M1. M2 really only brings the new form factor/magsafe but it's a pretty moot point for a lot of people..

    • +3

No issue with my base model M1 Air. Best laptop i've ever had. Long battery, great screen, never laggy. For just a bit more than 1k you can't go wrong. I don't like the new form factor of the M2 models and price is higher for no good reason.

M1 first generation tech ironing out the kinks and establishing the architecure. Valid comment

      • +4

Would be a valid comment if he explained why he's "nahhh" on the M1 Chip

        • +1

Not everyone is as articulate as us.

      • +1

You're just assuming what he meant. Let the 8827th Christopher speak for himself.

      • +1

The M1 is basically just a larger A14. In terms of Apple Silicon it's far from a first generation product.

On the software side you'll have just as many issues regardless of which Apple Silicon processor you use.

        • What issues? Looking for something like this for daughter. Will read reviews but interested in what you're referring to.

          • +2

@Igaf: My daughter has one just like this, and she's had it for a while.

She loves it. Uses it every day for Uni, work or gaming. She isn't big on making videos or music, but she could. She hasn't had any issues with it, and issues are very rare for this model.

There is just no better laptop for the money.

I'm a developer and my eyes aren't what they were, so I'm looking at the 16" model, but its three times the price and my current laptop is still usable.

            • +1

@mrmark1970: There should be a 15" Air released soon you might like.

          • +1

@Igaf: My whole team is using this particular base model for their work and it's been fantastic. Secure, fast, lightweight and incredible battery life. Best laptop for the price and even for higher demand applications suitable within reason. If you don't want to spend a lot this is THE laptop to get.

        • On the software side you'll have just as many issues regardless of which Apple Silicon processor you use.

Anyone care to take a guess what he means?
Is he referring to Apple V Windows for example?

          • @Igaf: Sorry I wasn't suggesting that Apple Silicon versions of macOS have a particularly large number of issues. I was just saying that there's no difference between having an M1 or an M2 when it comes to "ironing out the kinks" from a software perspective.

As a ex-long time Mac user find macOS these days to be a lot more buggy than Windows but for the hardware you get and the price you get it at you'd be mad to buy anything else.

            • @tp0: Thanks for clsrifying. I know next to nothing about Macs

      • +1

Kinks such as? The 20 hour battery life? Lol

        • The ipc gains in the m2 speak for themselves.

          • @Budju: as compared to m1 over intel was actually a much larger jump, those gains are big because its not year on year

          • @Budju: Also my M1 Pro is faster than the M2 regular… lol

          • +1

@Budju: Apple achieves massive IPC gains every year. I guess you’re new here?

            • -1

@tp0: No I'm not new to the corporate cheer leader squad. Thank you so much

    • Lol

This is a 2020 machine right? So coming on to a 3 year-old base spec model for over a grand? No thanks.

    • Have you ever actually used one? I'm guessing not?

      • -2

Yeah I have an M2 pro as my work machine. Point stands you are buying a near three-year-old model here if I read it correctly

        • +1

It is a three year old model, and externally it looks like a ten year old model.

But it's still great value. $1150 for this model, (checks notes) $1899 for the new M2 Macbook Air and $1999 for an M2 Pro.

Its pretty hard to find equivalent form factor and performance for $1150 anywhere else.

  • +3

Excellent laptop and price. I don't notice any difference compared to my desktop running 3600x - all office apps, basic video editing and react/expo coding are smooth and fast on m1.

  • Ebay plus members can get it for $1200 if you don't wish to use Afrerpay. SNSPLUSM adds an $100 off.

  • Any deals for the 512gb version?

  • +6

Recently bought an M1 MBA (albeit with 16gb RAM) and it's amazing - lightning fast and battery life is phenomenal. I can see myself using it for 5+ years. Highly recommended.

    • -3

I would not say lightening fast.

  • why has this expired?

  • Shows 1189 for me, is the published price for ebayplus?

    • Same here

      • I believe they jacked up the price for the colour. The silver one is $40 cheaper

        • +1

Mobileciti doing same price. Only looking at price protection, don't care about the shop 🙂

  • Good price

  • I’m one of the unlucky ones who bought the 2020 Intel Air just months before the M1 Air was released. Is it worth considering upgrading to an M1? How much of a bump will I notice?

FYI my Intel Air has 16GB RAM and I do some web/mobile development on there and sometimes the fan can get really loud and the CPU is on heavy load quite often.

    • You will almost certainly see some improvement. Try advertising your Intel MBA and see what interest you get. You might be better running your current Air as long as you can possibly put up with it and see if you can save up for a real upgrade - a 14" with 16GB of RAM and a Pro processor.

    • potentially 15" air being released his year too which might be nicer for development.

  • I have a surface laptop 3 and thinking of making the switch. Am I likely to see much difference in day to day usage (mostly used for we browsing, excel spreadsheets)? i7-1065G7, 16GB ram, 256GB ram so seems similar.

    • +2

You would gain a much better battery life but for a day to day use, your specs are perfectly fine and won't notice much of a difference tbh

  • Sigh. Only has 1 gadget budget
This or ipad pro 11 M1?

    • +2

      This.

    • This for productivity.

For media consumption though I would go for cheaper options than the ipad pro.

  • You can get nearly the same price using 15% off Apple eGift Cards and Apple education store.

  • -2

I’ve had the M1 Air and it’s an amazing machine and value..

HOWEVER it’s 2023 and you definitely want at least 512GB of storage and the 16GB RAM (max for this model). The 512/1024GB also makes the storage faster (because how Apple configures the nand modules).

It will make your machine last much longer.

    • +1

Do we really need to have this discussion one more time on this website?

      Allow me to summarise:
      - M1 MBA does not need 16GB RAM. It runs great on just 8GB and anyone who requires more should probably be buying a higher tier of laptop and not this entry level Mac.
      - Apple charges way too much for expanded storage. Anyone on this website should know that the more cost-effective method is to buy a fast external drive.

  • +1

    OOS.

  • Sold out. //sob sob\ 😭

  • placed the order on Friday… was chasing for delivery but got told by the seller they will not deliver ( damaged stock excuse). missed on the 15% off on gift cards since that deal expired

  • Same ordered on 17th.
    Has anyone received it yet?

    It said delivery by 24th.

  • Have heard nothing from the seller yet. I have tried chasing them up couple of times already.

  • Yeah same. Nothing yet. I think we all got conned somewhat. Just did some research. On the listing title it mentions (B/O ETA 25/4). I think it means back order estimated time of arrival 25/4. Dodgy ebay sellers. Deliberately making it vague.

    • In my order history the original listing does not have those words. I guess the seller backed out on price may be. Its a shame

  • Anyone hear anything regarding their order, delivery was supposed to be last week but according to my Ebay info, it hasn't even shipped yet?

Checked the sellers recent feedback and the most recent feedback was an unhappy customer who purchased this exact product and then cancelled the order after 6 days of unreturned messages, and then waited another 8 days for a refund, at least according to the feedback they left.

Not holding my breath for this one!

  • shipped today.

    • What day did you order? I'm still waitng for my update.

  • Just got email today , after 3 email for update.

Shipped and estimated delivery tomorrow. Let's see

  • Anyone know how much apple care costs for this laptop?

Anyone had screen cracking issue that's currently in the USA courts?

    • Thanks for the heads up. Now off my list. Small % having to fork out half the cost of their purchase to get screens replaced is too much of a coincidence.

      • +1

I was quoted $926 for the repair and paid about $1250 for the laptop brand new. Would have cost $149 with Apple care. This I'm happy to pursue as long as it takes.
