That batch cames from iMacs. It's kind of unfair to compare retail packaging and resold accessories.

Any deals on the non Touch ID version. My Mac is too old for Touch ID

Look for a deal on a new Mac, then come back here. Problem solved! (albeit with one extra step)

Consider MX series keyboard? MX mini or MX Mechanical Mini? Similar form factor but better typing experience in general. You don't have to put Touch ID into the equation anyway.

      • Amazon literally just dropped off my mx mini (for mac) as I read your post. I like the idea of having TouchID because I keep my mac lid closed, however I love the typing experience of my other mx keys keyboard.

I was thinking about returning the mx keys and buying this keyboard for the TouchID, but your comment made me rethink it… it’s a tough one.

        You’ve had experience with both?

        • It's not a hard decision now that Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is as cheap as MX Keys mini - get Magic Keyboard instead.

Between MX Mechanical mini and Magic Keyboard it would be hard to decide.

          • @xmagic: I need a keyboard that uses USB dongle to my Thunderbolt dock, so any computer that is connected to the dock inherits the keyboard.

I don’t suppose the Magic Keyboard allows me to do that?

            • @browncamry: Nope. Not that you want to use Magic Keyboard on platforms other than macOS.

              • @xmagic: We have a couple of macs at home - work and personal. We also have a windows computer and we just had to get used to a couple of keys being swapped around.

I’m left wondering whether to buy this keyboard just for the TouchID and sticking it under the table for my main computer (work). It’s at that price point where that’s worth considering!

                • @browncamry: It turns out the Magic Keyboard works with multiple machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z1I5lra7ko

Yes the keyboard does repair itself with the new device over wired connection.

So Touch ID (encrypted match on host) and Windows Hello biometrics (match on chip) are going down two different ways these days (or maybe just me mixing up the concept).

          • @xmagic: Logitech MX Keys Mini for Mac, Grey, is currently $109 on Amazon:
            https://amzn.asia/d/f2GtG51

            • @Moe Szyslak: I just found out that the apple keyboard works in wired mode, which suits my requirement with it being attached to my docking station.

It’s wired, but I get TouchID.

I also found out that the MX Keys mini doesn’t work with my unifying devices. It needs a Bolt receiver, which doesn’t come packaged with the keyboard. Grrr. Returning it.

    • Check this one and look for compatibility

Will this work with older Macs just as a keyboard without Touch ID?

  • +1

Does anyone know if I can just buy a touch ID accessory?

Or any fingerprint reader that interface with touch ID.

I love my mechanical but unfortunately the amount of touch ID I have to do with my work laptop forces me to reach over and now considering one of these keyboards..

    • Unfortunately I think it’s all Apple proprietary stuff for Touch ID.. however you can get one of these keyboard and convert it to just a Touch ID button

      • Sticking under the table is genius!

      • Geeeeee…. That's just too much effort.

    • You can buy an Apple Watch and that will work to unlock ur phone max and iPad without touching anything.

      • That solves it as long as you have: Apple Watch (more expensive than a spare keyboard for TouchID only), Apple's 2FA active and you only need to unlock the device, not for often being prompted to input your password like you often have to in some workflows.

Any deal on a version with numpad?

    • There was but we both missed it
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/761812

    • Was literally just before this deal, less than 1 hr earlier…

      • Sometimes I think I'd be better off just working some overtime each week and buying what I want, instead of waiting for deals on stuff I really want.

        • Yep. Seeing people wait 6 months to get $100 off is amusing. I got one these because I forgot they existed and this post triggered me hard to get one.

  • +2

I see the price has dropped by $5 from $139 to $134.

  • Can't really use this type of keyboard… I would rather type password time by time.

    • +3

You are not forced to use Touch ID. You can type your passwords if you wish to.

    My Magic Keyboard just arrived.

I have to be honest - on its own, it feels pretty cheap. It's way too light and flat. The Logitech MX Keys is a much better keyboard, but I wanted the TouchID feature.

I didn't want to spend $50+ on a keyboard stand to raise the keyboard, so I went hunting around in Bunnings and found this:

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/click-multi-purpose-cable-manage…

I stuck 2x large round cable mgt things at the top, and 2x thinner ones on the bottom. It raised the keyboard, gave it a bit more angle, gave it a bit more weight, and feels much more premium now.
