Melbourne to Tokyo, Japan from $214 One Way, $385 Return, from SYD $299 One Way with Cebu Pacific [Jul-Aug] @ Beat That Flight

541

Wow! Not seen it this low since pre-covid. It's a low cost airline via Philippines, but that price!

Includes carry-on luggage, and appears to be on a combination of A330s and A321Neos.

Note, the price is fluctuating, I've clicked through a few times and about half the time has shown me AU$418, other times the right price. So presume low availability, but if it doesn't work, try again a couple of times to be sure.

For accommodation, check out our top 5 hotels under $120!

One way example:

From Melbourne: $214 - 26 July one way
From Sydney: $299 - 12 July one way

Return Examples:

$385 Return - 26 Jul to 26 Aug
$478 Return - 26 Jul to 23 Aug
$494 Return - 26 Jul to 29 Aug

Blimey, even I would risk being pickpocketed and abused at the worst airport in East Asia to get these prices…

    • -5

Pretty sure people would be too scared to pick pocket in North Korea's airport.

      • +8

If the Filipino's best defence of their shit airport is that it's better than Pyongyang's airport, that says it all really.

        • -1
          • Philippines is in South-East Asia. Xyron said East Asia. Plmko said North Korea which is in East Asia.
          • MNL (Manila) is far from the worst airport is East and South-East Asia, even excluding North Korea.
          • My opinion perhaps has unfair judgements but I'd personally trust Manila over any airport in China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei, and East Timor.
          • No shit South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia have nicer airports than the Philippines. They also cost significantly more. As does Thailand and Indonesia but I'd rate them on the same level as Philippines.
          • +1

@Nillionaire: Having been to Mongolia, I was actually pleasantly surprised by Chinggis Khaan Airport.

    • Are you talking about Manila airport? Yes it's a very basic airport with many delays but the idea it isnt safe and their are pickpockets, are you wearing rolex? Literally been through that airport a dozen times, you're talking smack.

Do not book this if you're not comfortable with economy seats for more than a 2-3h flight… Their A321N seats are 28in pitch (2in less than standard domestic economy on Virgin or Qantas), and the A330 seats are half an inch narrower than both domestic options.

With something like Jetstar to Japan you're at least guaranteed 30in pitch / 17in width.

Great price if you're regular sized though haha

Yeah this is the downside with sardine-airlines. My brother is over 6 ft and flew Scoot to London. Never again, apparently :P I, fortunately, am shorter.

      • Jesus, thats the only thing that stopped me when Scoot had their super cheap flights from Melbourne to Berlin/Athens. I am 6'2 and someone I worked with is 5'7 and took that flight and said they wouldn't do it if you value your knees.

  • +5

I don't know why anyone would want to go via Philippines or another airport like it to get to Japan for only a couple of hundred bucks saving…..

    • -7

A couple of hundred saved is an entire months accommodation in Japan if you know where to go.

      • +7

I'll bite. Where do you go?

        • +19

The underpass of any speed rail connection.

internet gaming cafes (if they still exist) used to be ~$14 for over night. you'd get yourself a little booth and reclining gaming chair.

@altomic: do they steal your passport and iPhone while you sleep ?

that was our concern with a 6-hour layover with AirAsia - sitting inside KLIA2 - the number of creepy-looking local men staring at us as we tried to rest with our luggage beside us, just felt unsafe

(and no it's not racism - I love Malaysia - and I've traveled in India with crowds of people surrounding and staring at us - that was not the same feeling)

    • +4

We're going next month and indeed via Manila (just 2.5 hr transit). More than anything I'm extremely curious to see what's this massive fuss about this particular airport (having been to many third world airports I seriously want to experience this supposedly 'worst' airport in asia). Will definitely report back our experience here once I'm back.

      • Would love to hear your thoughts. Some people just get on the bandwagon and post their opinions, yet have never ventured to these places .

        • +1

You wont have an issue if everything goes as planned , but if one thing goes wrong that leads to worst day of your life and subsequently impacting rest of the holiday .

I grew up in south east asia thought i have seen it all , but this one trip with Malindo to Bali and connecting onto Lombok to start a 2weeks trip ruined by delayed flight in Brisbane then missed the connection . I literally walked entire International and domestic terminal in Bali to try and find help(Lion air staff literally don't give 0 shit and everyone has a different answer) ultimately wasting pretty much whole day and ended booking a brand new ticket to lambok and reached there super tired super late and super cranky

i am not saying it only happens with budget airlines , but you feel full impact if its budget airlines , Full service airlines at least give an assurance or a hotel room if things go south

          • @BK12: I've been either lucky or fortunate with my international travels: England x 2; USA x 3; Egypt; Singapore; Fiji; NZ and Malaysia. With all barring one being good experiences.

The weirdest experience was going to Egypt in 2002. Was supposed to leave around 11pm Sep 11 - yes 1 year after 9/11 attacks and the Emerites flight was cancelled due to an engine failure. Kinda ironic. Anyhoo myself and about a dozen others managed to fly out about 3 hours later with Singapore Airlines.

Instead of going through Dubai, we went through Singapore and Jeddah. After landing in Jeddah, our "group" was lead into a separate room with no seats or chairs. About 15 minutes later we were told by a uniformed man flanked by 2 heavily armed guards demanding our passports and boarding passes. We all submitted and feared the worst.

About an hour later we were then told to leave and enter the normal waiting area. On the way through we went through the security gate with the x-ray. I had a bottle of of Duty free Vodka, which was a big no-no in a dry country. After about half an hour and being forced to sign a form written in Arabic, I then had to put that bottle into my hold luggage.

Within minutes of boarding the plane, I finally get my passport and boarding pass. They altered my boarding pass from Business - as an upgrade from Emirates to apologise for missing the original flight - to the very end row of economy, next to the toilet. Well, I demanded that they reassign my seat back to business class, which they eventually did.

Finally, being the last person to board the transport to the plane, which was in the middle of nowhere, I find my backpack on the tarmac at the front of the plane, surrounded by 5 armed guards. WTF! They asked me if this was mine, which I confirmed it was, and they just put it in the luggage hold with the other luggage.

            Fun and games

Hmm, a stopover in Manila, or a cancelled domestic flight connection and lost baggage with Jetstar? So many choices.

    • I guess some ppl would do a multileg with Cebu and have a week or 2 in the Phillipines on their to or back from Japan.

  • +2

That 31.20 hour jetstar flight souunds like a hoot.

  • +35

Really don’t get these deals 20hr up, 25hr back, 7 hour wait Manila on way up, 12 hours way back, lose 2 days in travelling, no luggage, trip of nightmares

    • +16

Your nightmare might be another person's wet dream.

      • +3

Exactly, day trip in Manila… nothing wrong with that! See another country city really quickly. My favourite way of travelling actually.

    • +5

depends on the person. I've quit jobs in the past to go travelling, and two days travelling wasn't a big deal if it saved me cash. I've taken 2.5 day train rides over a flight because it was cheaper.

Also have had flatmates that spent 3 months backpacking in South America and NZ with carry on only. I've done several trips with carry on only (heck, did it last week on a domestic trip and we have a baby!). Others need lots of space for winter clothing, or souvenirs. To each their own.

(I've also been through MNL 3 times, one was a weird experience but all were fairly straightforward, if boring).

      • -5

That’s fine if someone want to save $$, but this is worst of the worst travel times & it’s priced accordingly, hardly a deal, to me anyway

        • +2

I know the mods don't like to get involved with the politics around negging deals, but this is a pretty weak reason to neg and not in line with the appropriate uses of a negative vote. IMO, negs are supposed to flag serious issues with the seller or product that a reasonable person may not be aware of this. In this instance, OP has been clear that these flights are with a budget airline and include a stopover. It's fine that you don't think that represents good value, but I just don't think that warrants a neg. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk.

          • +1

            @Ozybargdias:

It's fine that you don't think that represents good value, but I just don't think that warrants a neg.

It should. We should have more negs at OzB. How else are we supposed to separate the wheat from the chaff? Yes, we can rank by highest voted, but that's heavily biased toward products and services that everyone uses (e.g. financial services), and away from niche ones (e.g. hobbies, kids' stuff, etc).

            • @wisdomtooth: I don't see how more negs would help address that problem. In fact, I can see more negs making things worse. Consider the Western Bulldogs Membership deal on the front page right now. Obviously this deal is not good value for most people who either don't support the doggies or don't follow AFL at all, but represents great value for the minority who do. If the majority felt justified in negging this deal, it would have been dead in the water and never reached the front page.

              • +1

@Ozybargdias: What I said is not about negging stuff that's not of one's interest, but negging more posts than ones with "serious issues with the seller or product." If this very offer here were twice the offered price, would you still consider it a deal? If not, then you should be able to neg it, even if willing and able to travel on budget airlines.

                • +1

@wisdomtooth: If these flights were double the price, a neg would be justified under the principle of 'Cheaper price elsewhere' as outlined in the voting guidelines. I've actually negged beatthatflight before for this very reason. In this instance there appear to be no cheaper equivalent flights, so the deal is sound.

                  • @Ozybargdias: Ok, that's wider than "serious issues with the seller or product." It seems we agree.

              • -1

@Ozybargdias: just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's a deal, more just advertising their site, you can go on skyscanner all day long & play around with dates & find ridiculous travel times cheap

serious how can you think 35hours, 3 stops, to get melb to tokyo is a deal & thats $311 up, how you going to get back swim? so add return another $300 -$600+, doesnt add up does it

                • @RogueWolf: You're moving the goalposts now, cherry-picking flights that are different from those listed in the OP, and different from those mentioned in your original neg comment.

To be fair, the examples in the OP appear to be no longer available, but that would still be considered an inappropriate reason to neg under the voting guidelines. You should report as expired / OOS instead.

                  • -2

@Ozybargdias: my original neg there was worse flights than that with 30+ hours, I just chose 1 as a example, anyway expired now, see you at the next no deal lol

                    • @RogueWolf: I kind of agree.

But as stated sometimes the layover can work well.

For example I have a 19hr layover in Manila coming back from Japan to Melbourne with Cebu (I booked on a previous deal). It sounds terrible but it arrives 5.10pm and goes 12.30pm the next day; which if on time works great. (Ie. easy hotel stay at a red planet).

      • -8

call me old fashioned, but i think if you're financially well-off enough to quit jobs on a spur to go travelling, you'd probably take nicer direct flights.

and if you're not, then it's irresponsible and incredibly risky to do it at all. glad it worked out for you, though!

        • +4

Backpacking is pretty common - younger people usually late teens, 20s - pretty much the no money demographic lol. There are a lot of industries that rely heavily on backpackers, visit resort locations like Hamilton island and you’ll see a lot of the staff are from all over the world, the idea is to find a place wherever you’re staying that can earn you enough money to make it a working holiday.

          • -2

@doobey1231: we're not talking about a domestic backpacking trip, are we? unless WW3 started and australia has annexed both the Philippines and japan without anyone noticing?

also, backpackers rarely quit their jobs for it, it's usually done right before/after uni on a bit of savings.

            you're just off base everywhere.

            • +1

@xrailgun: Did it several times in my 20s and early 30s. Would contract, them travel. But I know a guy who works in a hostel and then travels every year he can, and has for decades. It's amazing how far you can make your money stretch when you're prepared to take flights like this one or sleep in dorms.

These days post covid I could work remotely and do it, but now I have a family and kids that's less likely ;)

When in South America, pretty much every backpacker I met had worked, quit and was now travelling. Some Israeli gap years after military service, but no, it's pretty common.

            • -1

@xrailgun: Obviously I am not talking about a domestic trip on a post about international travel, I specifically said the people working at those resorts are from multiple different countries.. I know several people that have done this for the better part of their 20s. They are back in Australia now but yes this is an actual thing. I feel sorry for you that you were never afforded the opportunity to try it out. Not my kinda jam but my mate has so many core memories from it.

You don't even know this is a thing yet you say I am off base? Hoo boy, suggest you do some research :)

        • I can travel for quite a lot cheaper than living in Australia. If you know you can easily get accommodation coming back, it's not really an issue.

My trip in 2016 through SEA for 10months cost me 5k aud all inclusive.

          • @ChipP: teach me the ways while not compromising my health and sleep throughout the process

            • @RQNinja: sleep is where most of the money was saved. I was young(er) then, and now opting more for super cheap hotels, or camping. my last trip was a month bicycle through France which cost me 500euro + 300euro once I resold my bicycle. next trip is SEA again, but Japan will be next year hiking and stealth camping (you can legally camp anywhere pretty much) + couchsurfing + hitchhiking for a few months (if life permits), so hopefully be a pretty cheap trip.

        • Sounds like to me this is cultural, @xrailgun. It's not something Asian, Middle-Eastern, Latin American and even North American people tend to do, but Europeans and Anglo-Australians do it plenty (bc they're less subject to competition, I guess).

  • My own transit experience with Philipine Airline in Mania was not that good…
I guess Cebu is not better that PAL…?

    • same airport though. They're the ones that usually control the experience :/

    • Cebu Pacific uses the newer terminal in MNL so a slightly better experience on the ground only.

  • +1

    A321N? No. Thank. You.

    • What's wrong with it? Little leg room?

  • Thanks OP for sharing. Will plan next trip

  • I still can't figure out this website .. at the top, why does it say origin MEL to TYO but down below it shows flights from MEL to MNL?
    https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/MEL2607TYO260…

    • do you mean where it shows MEL to MNL to NRT? It's a 1-stop flight, flying from Melbourne to Manila to Tokyo (Narita).

      • Where does it show MEL-MNL-NRT in my link? Here is the screenshot which only shows the origin MEL to TYO (red circle) and below it only shows flights to MNL (green circles). This screenshot tells me there are flights from MEL to MNL but nothing about going to Japan, except for the TYO in the red circle - but why does it say TYO and then it shows me direct flights from MEL to MNL? If I am searching for return flights as seen in the screenshot from MEL to TYO on the dates July 26 to Sep 26, why does it show one way flights MEL to MNL on April 21?
        https://i.imgur.com/58yyPjn.png

        • Interesting. I've clicked your link and as expected (to me at least!) it shows a return ticket
          https://imgur.com/a/jX2ZcCW

May I ask what device/browser you're using, to see if I can reproduce the issue?

          • @beatthatflight: I'm using chrome but managed to get it to show Tokyo after clearing my cookies (over 8MB) from your website. I didn't believe your screenshot at first until I saw the URL and saw it was the same. I tried the same link on brave, opera and firefox and they also showed Tokyo instead of Manila so realised it was something to do with chrome. Dang, now I'm too late and the flights are all $600+

            • @x x: Chrome, interesting. All my automated tests run in Chrome primarily, and I've not seen it before :/ Thanks for the info tho, all helps gathering clues! Windows I presume, since you didn't mention Safari?

  • For those looking for accommodation — especially with children! — especially with children who love dinosaurs and robots!! — I thought this was a great deal (especially with a free shuttle to Disney at the door!).
