You will need an auxiliary number plate and possibly brake light/indicator extension or you can get a big fine.

As with any rear bike carrier. Most(all?) state vehicle registration bodies sell trailer/rack plates for quite moderate cost.
Light extensions unlikely to be needed, vast majority will still be visible through the bicycle(s) wheels.

Yeah they are pretty cheap. Just saying it's needed in case people didn't realise. Still an awesome deal

        • I didn't know. Cheers. Where do you get a compliant plate..Motor reg?

          • @tunzafun001: Yeah motor registry in your state I guess. Probably order it online. Obviously the cardboard and Sharpie ones you see people use are not legal

    • I just bought one of these and looking at ordering a carrier plate - where on the rack would the plate be mounted? Would you remove the reflector and mount the plate there?

      • +1

I drilled couple of holes on the lowest part of my plate, and installed behind the reflective lights… Not sure that's the best way, but sorta might work for me

Great price, awesome product. Got mine in last years deal, use it regularly, including once with a 2,400km round trip and three bikes on it.

    • Do you think it could carry 4 bikes ok? I have a similar design and it's pretty much not possible to stick 4 bikes on.

With adult bikes … each 2nd bike in opposite direction, slightly weight balanced to either side so that cranks and rearsets don't push on each other!
With one or more child bikes … no problem!

Thanks OP - grabbed one to use over the next school holidays. Now to get fit enough to ride the bikes further than the end of the road :-)

Biggest regret of mine was not stumping up the cash for a tow bar on my new car. Transporting bikes is a bloody hassle.

    • You can still get one fitted.

      • Yeah for like $2k or more on euros lol

Nah, getting rid of it in a couple of years. I'll make the smart decision then.

    • When I got my car from the dealer I was hesitant of getting aftermarket tow bar but after few round of taking the bike in and out of the boot, it was messy and decided to get one, never regret it since then. At the time it cost me about $900 including the bike rack. It was luck that the place that installed the tow bar have a bike rack lying on his show room.

Thanks, ordered 1. Been on the lookout for one for a while for occasional use so didn't want to spend $$$.

BTW this one will work on a SUV/4WD with rear tyre carrier. You need 208mm from hitch pin to clear the tyre.

Thanks. Grabbed one for occasional use. Waited to see comments from the OzB community but mostly positive reviews here and on the Repco site

Pro tip from a towbar installer, use a bolt rather than a normal hitch pin to secure the rack to the hitch. You want to make sure it is screwed on very tight to reduce the amount of wobble. When you are towing, there's very minimal wobble on the hitch whereas a bike carrier will bounce around which isnt good for your frame. Use straps to secure the rack to different points on the car to provide more support if you can but its tricky on most cars.

    • What size bolt would be required?

  • +1

In case anybody needs to be told, not a good solution for anyone with a carbon fibre bike frame.

Highly recommend one of these for all hitch uses - totally eliminates the 'wobble' on both a gooseneck and flat bike rack. so simple but very effective (and cheap). Basically a u bolt.

    • How is this installed?

There's a good photo in the reviews at the bottom of the SCA link
