iPhone Battery Replacement $109 for All Models Prior to iPhone 14 (Increasing to $145 on March 1) @ Apple

3117

Call it a PSA or whatever - I don't really care where this belongs.

I had the battery on a couple of iphones changed today as the cost is still $109. The battery capacity was still 85% for both phones and Apple were insisting that I wait till the battery capacity hits 80%. I said I wanted them changed and saved myself $72.

The current out-of-warranty battery service fee will apply until the end of February 2023. Effective 1 March 2023, the out-of-warranty battery service fee will be increased by A$36 for all iPhone models prior to iPhone 14.

          • @Larsson: Sorry I mean the phone performance relating to battery health. A few years ago apple got busted because of the Battery Gate scandal that to deliberately slow phone when battery was unhealthy. After that been fixed I am not sure if battery health is still relevant to performance or not. My XS has 80% health at this moment and a bit slow so I am thinking about replacing the battery but just wanted to make sure the new battery would make it faster, or even just slightly. Asked Apple over chat funny enough they don’t give you a clear answer.

@NoBargainNoLife: Okay so what you are missing is the issue is bit more nuanced and sounds like you misunderstood a part of it (probably due to the way media covered of the issue)

Engineers at Apple didn't just felt like slowing your phone down. As the battery's degrade their ability to meet peak current and voltage demand is compromised, this happens to all Li-ion batteries, they have a finite life.

What happens in that case is when CPU tries to pull those peak voltage and/or current from the battery when particularly demanding task asked from the phone and battery fails to supply that, the phone will shut down and data maybe corrupted.

But you can avoid the phone randomly shutting down by not pulling those peak demands and just sticking with lower numbers, which in return means CPU will be limited to working below their previous capability.

So what has happened was engineers at Apple made a decision for the customers and choose a reliable operation by limiting the peak demands of the CPU's on phones with degraded batteries. The problem was and the reason they lost the case was they haven't given the choice to the customer. (From an engineering perspective it makes sense because there is decision like this made for customers on every product. Customer doesn't have to know all the technical details or understand, it's not their job. In fact that's what they are paying the engineers for. But in this case it was a bit of a judgment call…)

ANYWAY long story short, Apple released a software update to give the user the option between a reliable operation and peak performance. If you choose peak perf with your phone, you are slowly but surely to face shutdowns and potentially loosing data (or worse phone might not even operate properly due to those shutdowns later)

So not sure if your phone is throttling due to your batter percentage, you can look at the settings -> battery to see if that option is there for you. if it is, yes chances are yes it might be. Here is the article that details this: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208387

So no, Apple isn't just trying to get you to buy a new phone, or forcing you to replace battery. you bought a disposable device. The life of it just happens to be quite long.

@Larsson: Oh man I read every single word you wrote and I can’t say thank you enough for your input.
Yeah I understand the story was apple didn’t give option to customers so not really a scandal but because of that by that time performance and health were causally correlated. After that, not sure anymore. But after reading your comments and the information I obtained I might conclude that slightly degraded but healthy batteries should not affect phone performance but significantly degraded unhealthy batteries (maybe 80% as an Indication) might bottleneck performance due to potential unhealthy voltage.

My phone is still saying support peak performance so it should be fine in terms of performance. I feel slightly slow is probably solely due to dated hardware struggling with new demanding IOS and apps, nothing to do with the battery, or maybe a little given it’s at borderline line 80%.

All in all, I have just booked replacement tomorrow. It’s 4 and half year old already, time to give it some love and sit back to see if iPhone15 worth upgrading.

                Thanks again mate, you legend.

@NoBargainNoLife: oh wow, I thought I was writing a whole rant to someone who wasn't asking me what I thought of the issue haha. I am glad it was helpful.

I didn't realise it was your daily device, I was thinking it's your old phone that's a back up or something. If it is your main device 100% get a new battery. 80% I believe is the cut off for healthy battery, so yes yours is on the verge of having issues and it will certainly not going to get better with time.

think of it as $80 vs constant future issues, honestly 80$ for battery replacement with their repair standards are pretty great deal if you ask me. I changed a few batteries myself and very familiar with the process. Hearing Apple's standards from channels like iFixit and such, I am willing to bet they are actually doing the battery replacements at cost almost lol.

                  • @Larsson: Great to hear the price is reasonable, I thought about doing it myself but I am not that handy especially seeing people say the waterproof sealant etc should pay extra attention to.

My phone is XS max (sorry I missed MAX in my previews comment) so the price is 109 but I do think it’s still a good deal and good timing. Look forward to replacing it around lunchtime today!

Bargain Oz the year, so far…💥👌

  • Booked in for a replacement for my 12PM at 83%. My friend's 11PM is at 82% lol feeling fairly salty about that…

      That’s only a 1% battery drain in 11 hours… beyond impressive!

It took me a second to get it but then I chuckled

  • Anyone know if Samsung offer a similar service?

    • On preorder free Care+ can change batt & more for $99, 2x in 2yrs.
Otherwise, I think it's not more expensive than Apple.
      What's your current battery health?

My Galaxy Note 10+ after 3.5 years has 91% health (I use AccuBattery pro & keep the charge mostly at 20-80%).
Wife's Galaxy Note 8 (smaller batt) after 4.5 years (had screen free replacement & they changed the batt as well after 1y) is now 81%

      • Thanks.

The Samsung 'Battery Status' test shows the battery life as 'normal' and battery is rated as 'good' 4500mah. However, the battery has definitely degraded as I used to get over a day, but now struggle to make it past the early evening. Then, when the battery hits 15%, you better find a charger because within minutes it could die and switch off.

Come on, really? A price increase in today's inflation riddled economy? The issue is if people see this is okay there's a shit ton of other things going up in price that'll get posted for internet points and will just lead to more spam.

  • Nice post OP! Thinking if I should do it… I still have 88%

  • If you’ve had your screen replaced by an outside company will they still happily change the battery?

  • Found iphone 4+ in my kinder's recycling area, it's no longer charging. Do you think it's worth replacing its battery for my kids to play with?

As it might be locked and won't be able to sign in afterwards?

    Thanks

Do you think it's worth replacing its battery for my kids to play with?

      No.

Unlikely Apple services this model anymore.

  • My now secondary iPhone XS MAX went down to 83% Battery capacity, I had for 2 years & 10 weeks from this deal!

iPhone XS Max 512GB $699 Upfront $65 Per Month 1 Year Telstra Plan 60GB Data PM @ The Good Guys

That was such a good deal!

    • The deal that you could cancel the mobile plan early?

      • Yep, there’s no plans like these anymore

  • Its a deal in my eyes, price is going up so makes sense to get in now.

  • Thank you for sharing this deal. Just booked my iPhone battery service. Saved me $36

  • To be honest even if its a PSA, its too late, this ends in 2 days..

  • Thanks! Was putting off replacing my Iphone SE 2020 battery at 79% capacity, but I've finally bit the bullet to avoid the price hike all thanks to your PSA!

  • If you have fancy screen protectors, it will probably needs to be removed, so factor in the cost of a replacement screen protector. But it should be less than $10.

    • When I got the battery replaced in my iPhone 8 they cracked the screen protector so put a new one on for me for free.

  • Forget about the people who are focusing on the semantics of what bargain means. If have the chance to save money, it’s a bargain. Thanks Op!

Nice tip, but unfortunately a bit too late. Given most Genius Bar appointments are booked out days in advance, it is too late to take advantage of this.

Are people really replacing a battery just because it's lost 1/4 of it's life.

(profanity) hell. What a wasteful society we have become.

    • It's generally acknowledged that once an iPhone battery drops below 80% health, it deteriorates quickly from there. For heavy users it's unlikely to last a full day.

So it's not about losing a quarter, but whether you have to charge the phone mid-day, or having to carry a fully charged power bank everywhere.

Desk bound users may not feel it, but it is a pain for people on the move.

    • It is actually recommended that once battery has dropped below 80% that the battery be replaced (approximately 18-24 months or 500 charges). Unfortunately that's just the way batteries work.

    • Sadly yes. I had the XS Max and the battery was horrible I had to plug it in constantly just to ensure I don't get a dead phone by 5pm.

Also ewaste is made worse by Apple's insistence of gluing batteries in, and generally making repairs unviable. But I still bought an iPhone because I know I will have regular OS updates way longer than any Android phone; not to mention I can still sell a four year old iPhone for decent money.

    • Better than the alternative a big chunk of people would do - buy a whole new phone

    • The battery life counters aren't very accurate, when they say 80% capacity remaining the time between battery charges is more like 50% of new.

    • Buying a new phone every year or every two years or even when it functions fine and it's just the battery that is deteriorating is much more wasteful than replacing the battery when it's close to needing it.

  • Is it possible to pay using Apple Gift Card?

    • +2

Yes you can use Apple GC for service - I don't think you can use Apple Credit Balance though so don't redeem it into your account.

  • iPhone 7 plus battery upgrade costs $79 on Apple website

  • Saw this post yesterday and got my IPhone X battery replaced this morning 9am without an appointment. Tech said that the battery is connected to the speaker so the speaker (free of charge) gets changed at the same time as the battery.

Mine was on 80% capacity requiring service. Would last 3-4 hours of continual usage, so was consistently tied to a power bank.

    • Battery percentage indicator charges a lot more slowly than before - combined with the reinstatement of the original capacity I think the old battery was a lot more degraded than the 80% battery health let on.

      • Definitely, the battery capacity counter isn't very accurate, your battery was probably closer to 50% worn out.

    • How much were you charged?

      • $109 for iPhone X.

        • Thanks. Wish I had time to do this today :/

  • My iPhone 8 is at 79%. Phone is cooked, goes from like 100% to 20% in a few hours of very light use. Constantly charging. Will this help? Says $79 to book with Apple. Seems worth it??

    • If the phone has all the functions you need, and it is still in a good condition, then it's probably worth it. A new-ish phone will cost a lot more than $79.

    • I would go with replacing battery if you won't upgrade this year

    • I replaced mine (iPhone 8 too) and it helped a lot. But then I updated it to iOS 16 and the battery life is quite poor. I keep the battery charged between 40% and 80% to prolong the life of it and I'll probably charge it 2-3 times a day (from 40% to 80%).

If you don't need a new phone replacing the battery is a lot cheaper.

Although I've just checked the battery health on my phone and it's already at 93%, and I think I changed it around September last year. Seems quick for it to drop that fast, but I'd say their iPhone 8 batteries are quite old now.

Name checks out - great detective work Agent Smith.

  • I have a 2 years old,iphone 12 pro max and battery health is 86%
Would Apple change my battery under warranty?

    • Doubt it. I'd just pay for a new battery if I was keeping the phone for a few more years. Whether you get a new one today, or further in the future is up to you.

    • Our warranty doesn't cover batteries that wear down from normal use.
The one-year warranty includes service coverage for a defective battery.
If it is out of warranty, Apple offers battery service for a charge.
Your product is eligible for a battery replacement at no additional cost if you have AppleCare+ and your product's battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity.

  • Thanks OP, this post is super helpful as I was sitting on the fence to get my phone battery replaced.

iPhone XS with battery sitting at 82% maximum capacity

Mazuma Mobile decided my iPhone was in poor condition because it had a genuine battery replacement, but was otherwise flawless.

So just keep in mind that doing this might kill your resale value if you intend to use Mazuma Mobile, Monster Mobile, Mobile Muster, etc. But I guess those guys want to use any excuse to say your phone is in poor condition.

  • Thank you, really helpful. I was only thinking of replacing the battery because my iPhone X battery capacity was running low. Now is time to visit genius bar.

  • Thanks, my 12 pro is at 82% and not lasting a whole day now. Got it bookes in for tomorrow.

  • +1

Battery itself probably only worth $20 max.

  • -1

Get a $20 battery bank instead and you're good to go.. save a further $89 (after the battery bank). It's not like always need a new battery on an old phone.

  • Do they replace the battery in your existing phone and seal things back up or do they simply give you a brand new replacement phone of the same model?

  • Just checked. Battery 82%, booked tomorrow at 4pm.

  • Thanks OP. Changed over my back-up 8. Good for another couple of years.

My old iPhone 7 is used as a baby cam monitor. Only 52% max capacity.

Replaced today at Apple store for $79. It took 2 hours to service. Comes with 2 year warranty on battery failure but not battery drainage, since drainage depends on how much you use it.

Booked an appointment at 8am via their website and dropped it off by noon then picked it up after lunch and a little shopping. The whole process was smooth - I only waited 3mins in the Apple store for a technician to come and look at the phone and another 5mins to fill in the paper work submit the job.

It took 2 mins to wait for someone to bring me the phone when I came back to the store 2 hours later. A quick check that the battery health is 100% and my data is still there, paid the $79 then left the store in under 5minutes. Thanks OP for the reminder to replace my iPhone battery.

Not a bargain in any sense of the word. If posts like these get a bunch of upvotes, soon OzB front page will be flooded with posts like "FIFA 25, right now at RRP of $100 but soon will be $110. What a bargain. Buy 5"

  • -1

Where do you see the price?
When I book there are no prices mentioned at all.

    • +1

When you book your time slot on a computer on the right hand side near the bottom it has an estimated cost.

  • How hard did you have to push to get the batteries replaced?

When I replaced the battery in my iPhone 8 I'm pretty sure I had just under 80% capacity left and they were pretty anal about getting it done. Had to check the phone, get it approved to have the battery changed etc. Felt like they didn't really want to do it in the first place.

    • i think they were out of pocket making a loss for every replacement at $79 or $109.

but then no problem replacing an ip8+ yesterday at 80% and the lady said they're replacing a lot of batteries for the day.

those that commented this deal was useless with 2 days left , is untrue as plenty of people benefited from this even without appointment.

  • Did mine today, took under 2 hours. Old battery was showing up as 1151 full recharge cycles.

  • Thanks, got it done yesterday, great to see 100% battery health. If the phone can stretch another 2 years, it's well worth it.

  • Looked up the Apple support link and its still $109 today being March 1.

    • Increased to $114.90 from $79 for me. So "saved" $35.90.

    • It has increased now

  • Went to Apple Store on Tuesday, battery replacement for my 11 Pro ended up costing me $0.

Very nice worker had it done under warranty, even though being just over the 24 months.

  • Has anyone booked in February for a March appointment and kept the lower price?
