And to save flames between members and constant modding on the conflicts. All pro and anti discussions on the joking etc have been marked as inappropriate.

    • Agreed. It'll probably fill up by 5:30-6.

Now that it is on OzB, it is guaranteed to be chock-a-block with loonies.

    • +10

I'm not going to risk it… JV might turn up with his bold attitude ;)

    • +4

the most threatening thing that will happen during the screening of The Dark Knight Rises is some Ozbargainer complaining that they paid full price to watch it.

    • -2

It happened on the other side of the world, in a country that has very lax gun laws. Honestly the media seems to fear monger their readers and listeners into this kind of crap. You probably have a higher chance of dying in a car crash on the way to the movie theater.

      • +6

yea and in this country only the criminals have the guns now…

  • Sounds like an odd thing to do. Makes you wonder if numbers are down due to fear.

    • +6

i have no doubt in my mind that the incident has effected the success of the movie

      • +3

I just did some reading on it's success and seems there has been no effect. Cinemas are still selling out, and it's tracking to break box office records.
The chance of there being 2 wacko's to carry out this crime again is very minimal, and also I like the stance people in the US are taking. Reports show people are saying they are standing up to it and attending to show they won't be intimidated.

        • I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and a free screening is an awesome deal.

Don't get me wrong, the movie is still a success, just not as successful as it would have been. Multiple premieres in major cities and marketing campaigns were pulled, more out of respect for the tragedy not due to a risk of a second incident.

        • +4

The last I read the stance they were taking was to rush out and buy more guns: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/colorado-gun-saleā€¦

        • the dark knight rises had the biggest 2d opening weekend ever, the only reason it didn't beat the avengers was because that pulled in extra cash from 3d ticket sales

it's pretty safe to say that this tragic incident didn't really affect sales…

        • +1

          @johnno07
          I heard about that too.
It's typical of the mentality in US. They don't need gun control, just more guns to protect themselves.

        • -1

@robism - it was actually 3rd but anyways you are right about the 3d avengers.

Although this movie is a must for imax - the better footage is SO worth it.

        • +3

Wasn't there a particular state in the US (Texas or Wyoming) that had the highest per capita gun ownership, yet one of the lowest violent crime rates?

You've gotta wonder, what loony would then chance walking into a cinema full of people with malicious intent if s/he knew that at least 50% of the audience were also packing heat??? Food for thought…

        • it's the biggest opening for a strictly 2d movie… the avengers and harry potter were both released in 3d as well

        • Holmes was well-armed with body armor, weapons and tear gas so taking him down would have been difficult by a civilian.

        • I'd take difficult (armed) over impossible (unarmed) any day though! ;)

        • +3

I think the operative word you've used there is "loony". A person in such a state of mind is going to do what they want to do, regardless of whether their victims may be armed or not. Legally, the entire audience in the Century 16 cinema could have been armed, but it didn't seem to bother him.

And can you imagine if we had similar gun laws here? Think about those dozen or so idiots/bogans/loons that you no doubt passed in your daily comings and goings today. Now imagine them armed. Imagine a fight between two drunk blokes outside a club and one or both pulling a gun when things escalated. I just cannot entertain the thought that more guns is a good thing.

        • +2

Oddly enough, loony does not always mean stupid…a lot of these guys that are off with the fairies on one level are meticulous planners in other aspects of their lives! Believe it or not, they're never totally random; they tend to choose known soft targets!

I grew up in a place & time when pretty much every home had at least one gun for pest control/hunting purposes. There were very few gun related crimes then, perhaps due to a better social climate. I'm not sure how todays increasingly 'antisocial' society would cope with that level of responsibility, you could be right about the idiots, but most people tend to be fairly well-behaved when there's enough accountability. Enter proper licencing & registration.

I suppose we'll never truly know either way, our laws are changing such that; as others have noted; only the criminals now have ready access to firearms. I agree about bogans with guns though, that thought makes me shudder!!! ;)

  • +2

I am not sure how this works. They also seem to be selling tickets to this show. How are they planning to manage the crowd?

  • +3

I can't imagine how many after school kids will be there. Just 1 local school enough to fill the cinema.

  • come along at 5, for movie at 7.15

  • +1

well this seems like a gigantic trap

    • It's a trap!!!!!!!

  • +1

magic mike is stealing batman sales. those who can't get a free ticket will probably see male strippers instead. It's only logical.

  • +5

You might waste your time for 2.5 hours and couldn't get in.

  • will be packed and seems like an odd thing to do

    • there are constant posts for free screenings of movies. this is not odd whatsoever

  • Spoiler warning: After this movie at night you will definitely want to hide in a dark corner and in a low grinding voice say…"I am the batman…" to scare people

    I am serious

  • Back on topic. Is there really any point in trying to get into this? You will even be beaten to it by a hundred people that don't know a thing about it, but happen to walk past at the right time. Sounds like a shocking night out, to be honest.

    • Not to mention sitting through a 2-hour photo-shoot. I'd rather pose for Spencer Tunic.

And this offer has already inspired a mass-rampage by the moderator.

  • i was planning to watch it Gold Class tomorrow in top ryde…

    • Top Ryde doesn't have Gold Class…

      • exactly

        • then, i have to drive to macquarie centre.i can have a nice lunch in Sambo then. yummy!

        • You better prebook or get in early, nearly every gold class after 2pm is under 5 tickets or sold out.

  • btw, all the commenting people above live around Top Ryde?

  • Come on OzB mods, you don't want the same reputation as the mods on Whirlpool, do you? ;)

    • PinzVidz

What sort of comment is that.

I have had multiple reports on issues with what people were posting here. This is a place to share bargains.

That has always been clear. We try to walk a balance between different peoples needs and wants and rights.

The world of bargains isnt the domain of young 10 year olds wanting everything for free, or 80 year olds from the depression who survived on just that. Its everyone.

Some have got very offended by what they saw as insensitive remarks, then flame wars started, which nobody wins. Then they move away, and so do the postings of bargains they could post.

So what do you want. Express your opinion on something that nothing to do with a bargain and offend people, or have a bargain?

      As I said above

Sensitivities on this are pretty strong, and this is not taking sides, but we love to share great deals, lets keep off things that could destroy that sharing attitude.

So what more can we do?

      • +3

can you make it that people can choose to the "inappropriate" comments just like you can choose to see the ones that are offtopic?

        • If you think its important to have this, start a thread in the site feedback forum

  • +1

I just got in the line up, about 20 people ahead of me :)

    • +3

      Wtf? You're lining up already?
      Kudos to you mate!

    • a true ozbargainer..

      • +4

Yep, Would rather sit around for 6 hours doing nothing to save $20 than get a basic job and make 4 times as much.

  • +20

just rook up at 7.15pm today and enjoy the movie..

Or don't rook up: stay home and watch pawn.

    • Bravo, MattyD!

    • +1

Catwoman in tight leather garmet is screen porn, arguably ;)

  • Their post on FB has been updated to this "Calling all Batman fans (UPDATED POST): see The Dark Knight Rises today for FREE at Event Cinemas Top Ryde! Come along at 5pm for a special photo shoot followed by a free screening of The Dark Knight Rises at 6.30pm! First in, first served." (NOTE: 6:30PM, NOTE: No VMAX) That saves 45 minutes..

    • I think the line would be full by the latest of 4pm though

  • +4

Gunna be a lot disappointed people rocking up to see this session and no spare seats left.

I'd rather just pay $10 at Hoyts and get a seat allocated to me, no stress, no wasted hours standing there for a freebie.

    • Agreed. The irritation created by these first in, best dressed deals is just plain irresponsible. If they're fair-dinkum about it then they should have made it online reservations or something.

      • +5

        Now then guys

Its FREE ,nothing in the rules say that people have to take it.

Line up or move on, your choice :)

        • +2

Just because something is FREE, or even just cheap, doesn't mean that it has been well managed. Forcing people to line up when there are other options is just baiting them, as others have noted organisers are hoping for a movie 'switch'.

It's an ONLINE promotion FFS, how hard would it have been to add a click & reserve option for the finite number of free tickets? IMHO it's just poor form, but that's my rant.

FWIW, I don't tend to line up for much at all purely on spec; I'm with spuddy…my time is more valuable! ;)

        • +2

Obviously they could have simply set up an online reservation system. But instead they purposely did it this way - to get a million people into the cinema with the hope that the 999,700 people that don't get in pay to see another movie because they are there anyway.

        • because people could just reserve a ticket even if they had no intention of showing up, or would not hesitate to skip it…you would end up with a fair few empty seats…

        • +1

How stupid to think they could do online reservations. And uh what happens when say 50 people decide to change their mind and not attend the FREE movie? cause after all it like cost them nothing, so they have nothing to lose for changing their mind! OMG common sense people, how much work do you really want people giving stuff away for free to do for you? sheesh!

        • +1

Well penthius, all I can say is that you must really enjoy lining up randomly on the off-chance that you might get something for nix…sorry, but my time is a little more valuable to me than that! That's the problem with the sheep mentality, it doesn't take much to entice a mob of them in! ;)

It's noteworthy that the organisers of the FREE viewing of The Sapphires http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/74645 were able to implement a reservation system, so there's a precedent even for a smaller indie flick. For a new Hollywood blockbuster movie, the pullout rate for reservations would have been negligible anyway…this was never about the movie.

    • +3

Agree with Mod about it being free and first in best dressed , however saying that why would anyone want to lineup for hours for a movie when like UFO states its $10 , unless you have plenty of time on your hands and don't get bored waiting for 5 hours to get in to a movie. I know my time is more valuable than standin/sitting for 5 hours

      • I agree with you why would you bother lining up.

Only one point to make is that in this case it's not a MOD comment. Its a personal comment, hence no mod tag against my name. That way people see it's not a board related comment being made, its a personal one. Cheers

$11.50 on Tuesday. A standard adult ticket is normally $18.50.

        • what kind of ozbargainer pays more than $10 for ticket?? There is the optus deal and another one floating around.

        • Using a gift card, mate.

  • Shhhhhh top ryde cinema.

I really liked the fact no one seemed to know about you and you were never packed. Keep this up and you might actually have a customer base.

    • LOL I know right I went on Friday the day after it was released and there was only like 5 people in the session :D

  • Hoax

There is no Top Ryde Cinema…………………………..

Okay there really is one :) but made you look

  • Its a great movie!

    • If it was a terrible movie people would still flock there because of a freebie.

      • but its not, although the visuals are diminished due to lack of IMAX

  • Friend was just there got told that it is cancelled…. Wat the
