Trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ljho1cyEfg

The Sapphires is an inspirational tale set in the heady days of the late ‘60s when four young, talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission, are discovered and guided by an unlikely manager. Plucked from obscurity and branded as Australia's answer to The Supremes, The Sapphires grasp the opportunity of a lifetime when given the opportunity to entertain American troops in Vietnam. Their journey of discovery offers them not only the chance to show off their musical skills, but find love and togetherness and grow as women.

Receving a ten minute standing ovation at the prestgious Cannes Film Festival, The Sapphires is a crowd-pleasing combination of comedy, heart and romance and an unbeatable soul music soundtrack, set against the social upheaval of the late 1960s. Based on the successful Australian stage musical and inspired by a remarkable true story, The Sapphires is not to be missed.

    I guess it's the season for pro-War movies…

Sending Aussie black women to "entertain the Brothers"
seems to be one of this film's plot-lines.

I won't be applying for ticket.

    "They's 'been 'nuff war already… dun'cha think?"

    I do.

    • Pro-War?
      How so?
      Surely you're trolling?

      • No, I'm simply -observing- that there seem to be MORE
movies, etc. that depict war, etc. (with stereotypical roles: male soldiers & female entertainers, nurses, etc.) than about peacemakers, etc.

In this case, the women's roles seem to be help the troops carry-on. (As I haven't seen the film, I don't know if any -other- roles are portrayed for women. Of course, MAS*H had female officers (nurses, mostly; a few doctors, I think).

Here, the roles for the 4 women singers are only to rouse & support the troups, so they can carry on fighting… while stuck - far from home, wives, girlfriends, families, etc.

(I think you'd have to have lived in a genuinely Neutral country, ie, to really get what I mean here.

Sweden seemed to be in a position to make more documentaries about -its- type of hero, eg, the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who helped Jews & others to escape from the Nazis.

A film about herds of mostly-male soldiers going ga-ga over the only 4 women available to them (and, then, only to look at & listen to singing) probably -wouldn't- interest, let alone satisfy, most Swedes. Of course, that's only my guess.

Even non-Neutral India, has -its- type of hero - eg, Ghandi - who championed non-violent action to win an eviction of the British.)

Does that -really- sound like "trolling" to you…? :-/

        • This is Oz, not Sweden.

There were and always be more soldiers than peacemakers.

        • +1

Soldiers can be peacemaker. Generalising about movies seems redundant to me, especially against Sweden and the fact about Ghandi doesn't seem to have any point. Actually why you would want to pick a fight with such an obscure range of sources as your argument (randomly picking out Swedish cinema and Indian history) just makes you look like an idiot. You are trying to make a point with basically nothing, it is a movie dude (and comparing it to one other movie and basing whole countries cinema on them is ludicrous), get over it. Both Australian and to a lesser extent Swedish cinema is minor at most (movies about both soldiers and peacemakers are over done and cheesy, especially in a day and age where we need much more then feel-good movies), it is like picking out a winner in a cockroach-fighting competition.

        • The two do not have to be mutually exclusive: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/peter_van_uhm_why_i_chose_a…

So wait…you're annoyed that films are historically accurate in their depiction of the roles played by men and women?

When did Event Cinemas Macquarie Macquarie Shopping Centre, North Ryde become 'Sydney' ?? The session is full anyway - but boy, Macquarie Centre is a bugger of a place to get to unless you live around there.

  • Adelaide Full as well.

  • What the hell is this movie? What's the genre?

    • It's about a female group called the Sapphires - Indigenous girls who were made to sing and dance like African American pop stars. Preview looked very interesting. Based on a true story.

      • Does it have any nude scenes?

        • +1

don't think you would want to see deborah mailman nude…
