  • What app does this use?

    • These cameras use their own Imou branded app. Great cameras for the money.I use a raspberry Pi with homebridge installed and I can now view the Imou cameras through Apple Home and on my Apple TV in a picture in picture view whilst watching TV or streaming services. Best value cameras on the market in my opinion.

      • Ah okay, yeah they seem to have human detection for $35, 4MP, H265 for less than $35.

        Seems excellent value.

The Ranger 2C is obviously an indoors only camera. I have one located on a window sill at the front of our home and it’s been working perfectly for the past couple of years. The only issue I had was I have to turn off the infra red light on the camera as it reflects off the glass window and causes a blown out video image.

Their outdoor cameras are phenomenal as well…highly recommend this brand. Pretty sure Imou is a budget Dahua rebrand.

          • @jono1971: I have a "spare" mijia's indoor camera. like what you did, i placed it on the window sill. it works well during the day time, but not at night. So, if i can (dont know if really can) switch off the infra red, it should also work fine at night time?

            • +2

@aec: It will work better with IR off on the camera. What I have done in the past is place an external IR light box outside to light the area and this worked extremely well. Jay car used to sell the IR light kits which consisted of the 30 IR LED’s.They also sell a Long Range Infrared Spotlight for $100 which would also do the job but might be a little overkill :)

          • @jono1971: Which outdoors camera do you use?

            • @Francis82: I use the Bullet Lites and the Bullet 2E’s which also have motion activated lights.

              • @jono1971: Cheers mate what's your preference

                • @Francis82: The Bullet 2E is the newer model and has two lights on the front to light up the area when motion is detected etc. I would just buy the 2E going forward:)

          • @jono1971: Could you mount this indoor one, outdoors in a covered corner … there’s no way it could get sun and rain there?

            • +1

@PVA: Should be fine as long as no rain or dust gets blown into the area.

      • Can you check the video remotely (not in the same wifi network, but use say mobile data?)

        • +1

          Yes, use app ''Imou Life".

        • +1

Yep, no problems at all. Just log in on your phone or ipad over the mobile network. You can also setup notifications whenever it detects movement and you can also view recorded video that was recorded when the camera detected motion.

      • Thanks for this. Just ordered. You using ffmpeg plugin for HomeKit in homebridge?

        • No, I use Homebridge Camera UI for these cameras.

      • @jono1971 would you be able to share how you setup the camera with homebridge? Would love to be able to view the camera feed on the Apple TV

        • This video should help you out :)
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU8aOUHRsN0

          • @jono1971: Thank you

          • @jono1971: Sorry to be a pain but how did you get the RTSP steam working? I've got the right password from the camera etc but cannot connect to it using VLC etc

            • @Sarquiss: Have you changed the stream from H.265 to H.264 ?
You would need to download SmartPSS and use that app to make the changes.

              • @jono1971: Hi @jono1971. I am having the same issue. I have downloaded the SmartPSS app but cant seem to find the option to change the stream. Could you please share where would these changes need to be made. Thanks!

              • @jono1971: I got one camera to work but the other refuses to work - it’s also not updating the FW but is otherwise working perfectly with the app itself.

I also didn’t change the format using SmartPSS - I set Homebridge to encode the stream. I’ll take a look at SmartPSS if it allows me to record to iClous

  • Anyone use one of these as a baby monitor? Any way to attach it to or near a cot?

    • Yea, buy a cheap tripod. If you attach it to the cot, the baby will eventually play with the camera and or cables.

    • change table.

    • I got a plank of wood and screwed it on there and attached it to the cot. Spray paint it the same colour as the cot and hid the cable around the back.

      • That’s a great idea. Just brought it. Gonna head to Bunnings to grab a plank of wood and set it up like you’ve described

      • got a photo man???

        • Na didn’t take any photos of the setup. It’s pretty basic but got the job done.

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/12mm-mdf-panel-standard-900-x-45…

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/dy-mark-350g-white-spray-mark-wa…

Cut the MDF into a strip of say 900x100mm. Then cut another panel that will be sitting perpendicular on the top, big enough to mount the camera upside down.
If the cot isn’t wood then you need to cut another panel to use it as like a vice to secure it between the posts (would need to buy a bolt and nut as well).
Screw them together, sandpaper the all the edges it down if needed and use a low VOC spray paint.
Leave it outside for a week or so and the smell should be all gone.

    • It's a bit creepy spying on babies in the privacy of their own bedroom

  • Anyone know whether the app is free and recording all free? How many cameras can I add to the app without paying?
    Thanks

    • +1

App free and record to SD card and
also subscription to cloud if wanted for a fee

    • +1

Yep app is free but offers various paid upgrades. I run 7 Imou cameras and the recordings are all stored on the individual camera SD cards. If you wanted them to be uploaded to the cloud you can pay Imou for that upgrade option. Like I said in my first post reply, I use homebridge on a Rasp. Pi which will upload the recordings to my icloud server for free. I pay $5 a month for the iCloud option that allows the camera recording option for multiple cameras. I think the Imou cloud option is $15 to $20 per month, so I’m saving a fair bit using the setup I have.

      • Do you have to set the camera to H264 for it allow uploading to iCloud?

        • Yep H265 won’t work at this stage.

      • Range 2c supports only H265, which means it needs to convert to H264 in order use them in Homekit. If you have more than one cam, Rasp is not good enough as it needs more cpu power.

For Homekit option, Imou Range 2c is not a good recommendation if you buy two. Homekit streaming would have a latency. I’m pretty sure as I run Scrypted server in my mac mini.

        • What do you recommend then?

          • @aec: For homekit? Still look for a good one with H264 or wait for Homekit to support H265.

Transcoding is a quite expensive as it need to provide adaptive quality streaming in Homekit, which means it convert to different streaming videos like local stream, remote stream, low resolution stream( apple watch) , local recording stream (icloud recording), remote recording.

I should have checked it before including Range 2C to my apple farm.

    • I've got two setup through smartpss - both recording to an old laptop.

      • It depends on a performance of the laptop. Recording seems okay as it just records everything the server provides. But when transcoding and turning on object detection for iCloud recognition, you would have a big latency.

  • I've had 3 of these on the app with no problem and also 24/7 recording to SD card great camera for the price.
I've also used it outside under a carport with a powerbank and worked fine

    • how often do you charge your powerbank?

  • Do these do an ET?…….aka phone home

    • If you use the Imou app it will.

      • +1

Can you use it without using the Imou app?

    • +1

Get a wyze v3 with the wz_mini_hacks firmware and you can disable cloud, making it an rstp only cam. Works well with frigate

      • Hey thanks for that , Ill look into it

        • +1

Lmk if you need help configuring, as I have already written all the appropriate iptable and config files. My DMS are always open ;)

  • I’ve used this in the front and back yard for about a few months now and works reliably over the internet

  • +2

How does this compare to tapo?

  • How do these (well any camera really) work with vacuum robots.
Our vac goes off around 1am, would that mean I’d get an alert at 1am every day because of the movement?

    • I tend to only get notifications for people since I have "human motion" turned on. If it was an issue you can set it not to detect motion between X and X time.

      • You can turn times off, that’s good.

Is it the same during the day, you get notifications when you wonder around your home? (As you can tell, we’ve never had a camera)

        • Is it the same during the day, you get notifications when you wonder around your home? (As you can tell, we’ve never had a camera)

Yep it'll send you notifications to your phone. It's possible to set areas where the camera won't look for motion.

          • @Clear: Oh man, that’ll be a pain for open plan downstairs … I’d get notifications so often I would just start to ignore them.

I’d need some auto on mode for when we leave home (auto as I’d never turn it on otherwise), I guess.

            • @PVA: That's the point of motion tracking notifications. You're better off pointing them at entrances.

              • @Clear: Bugger, looks like not for me then.

  • Do these have sound alert notifications ie pet noises?

    • +1

Yep, you can also dial in the sound level threshold before it sends the alert.

    These ONVIF compatible?

    • Yes.

    • No, it does not fully support ONVIF as it does not use the standard port: 580.

      • hi man, what does fully support mean?

      • Since when is that the standard port? What are you using?

        • ONVIF scanning in the same network does not work. And some module to handle ONVIF can not use rtsp. Anyone has tested? I guess it needs to support ONVIF port to make it work instead of using rtsp protocol with parameter. If someone find something to set it up with range 2c, please share.

  • isn't this Dahua?

    • +1

Yes. Dahua's home consumer brand. Works no issue with Dahua NVRs etc.

  • +1

Bought a couple in the last deal, they're great. Have them both outside under the eaves, using cheap 32gb SD cards, working no worries. Pihole had cleaned up their phone homes pretty well, and if I ever get home assistant running again, these seem to work beautifully

    Recommended

    • how many days recording 32gb can hold ?

  • Can someone tell how many days recording 32gb can hold ? And if these cameras track movements as well ?

they bloody have increased the price! $67.22 for two (ebay plus)

  • SFEB15 isn't working for me..
I amNot able to add at this price now,
    Any suggestions?

    • No issues, working in guest mode..

  • +2

Showing $92.98 before SFEB17 and $77.17 after for me

  • Scums raised the price

  • Wondering if anyone has had success to get these to work with Frigate?

  • Mine arrived, 1 camera was faulty, the seller refunded me $39 so more than half the order cost. W
Looking into setting up with homebridge but looks difficult :/

  • I feel like I must be blind or something, I see references to Micro SD Card Slot (up to 256GB) in the manual, but I'm looking at it physically and… I'm not seeing it.

    • you need to make it point all the way up to the ceiling using the ptz joystick on the app then you'll find the sd slot
