Yellow dial - such a stunner

    • +1

yes! loved the yellow dial one too.

    • +2

I got this Invicta yellow dial but I do like the deeper yellow of the Citizen, although I won't buy it and have 2x yellow dials. Would rather use the money to add a red and green dial (I got the tiffany blue last sale at $229)
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B000FV8QJ6

      • Dang didn’t know they did one in yellow - did you get a sick deal on it?

        • According to my spreadsheet I paid $130.10 for it on 22/04/2022 and received on 14/06/2022. At first they cancelled the order and said it was returned cos it was defective so I followed up and said I still want it and they tried to charge more but in the end they honoured the original sale price I first paid

      • -2

definitely sell that garbage invicta, lol. this citizen is better. never buy invicta again. i would go seiko, then citizen, and you couldn't pay me to have any invicta. no respectable person would own an invicta. i'm not even a watch snob either, lol.

        • I'm a respectable person, can you tell me why I would not own that linked Invicta?

Style aside, it's a diver rated to 300m, Seiko nh35 mech. What is bad about it?

          • @inamberclad: In the case of the linked watch, the only thing wrong with it (price in mind) is the brand name.
The same cannot be said for all Invicta watches.

          • +3

@inamberclad: They aren't very nice to be honest and you can get a lot better if spending $200. They go way overboard with branding, etching on the side of the case is pretty awful, not really Swiss made etc but advertise as so. Nh35 is good at least and the water resistance, Just look a bit cheap and the bracelets would be as well. Plenty of better quality sub homages around (eg Pagani design with sapphire crystal and nicer bracelet etc for $100)

          • +2

@inamberclad: Well, the short answer is, β€œInvictas are plastic toy watches made in China. They're over priced, short lived, and generally pieces of junk.”

They also started off making knock-off rolex watches.

            • @Hugh G Rection: The Invicta Grand Diver mentioned above has a stainless steel case & Seiko NH35 auto movement which is a step above what's in your Seiko SKX. Definitely won't be "short lived".

Previously you shared your thoughts that "casio is great". The majority of their watches are plastic & made in China. Seiko make plastic watches too.
Where do you think these Citizen watches are made seeing you said above they are better?

I think you might be hating on Invicta just because of the name.

              • @WatchNerd: They ruined there own name making knock-offs.

Invicta is Latin for "unconquered". What's Latin for "unoriginal"?

                • @Hugh G Rection: I just think all those Invictas on Amazon are cheap looking and unoriginal, they did seem like the first submariner copy. The etching on the case and over branding is very tasteless. Perhaps a couple of higher end models are ok, haven't looked.

There are much better options out there these days though and higher quality homages (with sapphire crystal, better quality bracelets and clasps, better lume, for $100).

It seems Invicta are still riding on the Swiss made legacy, when in fact only a small percent of the watch is (maybe the company name) and they are mass produced in China. I wouldn't mind buying one for the movement if they were $60 on sale or something and upgrade a Seiko I got.

        • -6

Why would Invicta be garbage? Even Rolex made a homage Invicta watch - only kings wear Invictas

Seiko SRPE77K (metallic purple dial, mesh strap)
omh, this is simply gorgeous. I would 110% purchase this on sight for my daughter, if the dial was 33mm or less. At 1.55ish metres + slender wrist, 39mm is a bit too big unfortunately.

If there exists a smaller dial version of this, please do let me know.

    • +4

I think big dials look good on skinny girl wrists, looks like they're wearing hubby's watch and don't give af

      • +1

haha can't say i think that way. big watch on skinny girl just emphasises skinniness.

imo everything has to be in proportion to maximise elegance.

    • +2

"39mm is a bit too big unfortunately."

That's almost as small as you can get for a diver isn't it? At least for the limited edition type watches.

You sent me down the road of purple watches and I also found the Seiko x One Piece "Robin" (based on a female character). The same 42.5mm case but looks more purple to me.

I also found the Seiko EVA-W01. Lol. I can't see the appeal but Evangelion fans would probably like it.

      • Seiko x One Piece "Robin"

Yooo what the heck that shade of purple is gorgeous!!!!

    • Where are you getting 39mm from? Isn't this 42.5mm?

      • I got a bit confused too but grumble is referring to "dial size" not case size.

      • Sorry, I don't know what I was thinking. You are correct, this is 42.5mm.

    • Yes those Seiko 5 are quite thick too.
Perhaps a tiffany dress watch or something would be better.

This cadisen diver in 38mm Tiffany looks ok
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004577984945.html

      • +2

Appreciate the suggestion, but 38mm is also a bit too big.

Also, I don't really know the Cadisen brand. I've intended for her first 'serious' watch to be a seiko/citizen/orient/tissot or something along those lines.

        • cadisen do a lot of homages of other well-known watches, and they're controversial to some as a result

        • Yeah probably have to scour the websites for those brands and go to a few jewelers and have a look - although a lot of brands and watches are unisex it sounds like you need a ladies watch anyway. Most of the fun is looking and researching..

          Cheers.

    • +2

I would 110% purchase this on sight for my daughter, if the dial was 33mm or less. At 1.55ish metres + slender wrist

You should 120% buy this for your daughter because she's pretty tall already (I don't know her age, but early high school?). It's 42.5mm but the lugs almost line up with the bezel so it should wear smaller and the curved case also helps. The sharkmesh bracelet is incredibly simple to adjust for her growing wrist. This has the same movement in watches 3x the price, and servicing will be inexpensive in the future. Women wearing large men's watches has been a trend for a while, so it'll also be trendy and fashionable.

I remember getting my first automatic Seiko from my grandpa and he even cut the rubber straps so it'd fit me, but I didn't appreciate it at the time. But it is still a very positive core memory and made me the watch nerd (shout out to @WatchNerd) I am today.

If you love it, and you think your daughter will love it, buy it 130%. You won't regret it.

      • Best to go and look at one and try on.
It looks fairly nice. Most people (and kids) would want a smart watch these days I guess.

        • Smart watches are cool (had a Samsung watch 4 classic for a few weeks) until you realise you have to charge it everyday. Huawei Band 7 is the best budget fitness tracker I've had, and I've tried the Xiaomis and Fitbits.

Really depends on the kids. Everything old is new again, and rocking an big purple auto with sharkmesh is pretty cool. Depending onthe kid of course

          • @rosebank: Yes I'm not interested in spending $400-600 on a Smart watch and have to charge it everyday as well as your phone. Limited life span too before the tech is obsolete.

I've had a Fitbit charge 5 for a year and recommend These - battery lasts close to 7 days, can still use for notifications, pay pass, ECG, all the fitness and sleep tracking work well and great display that is easy to read outside. I wear all the time on right hand and proper traditional watch on left.

            • @G-rig: I had a Charge 4 which died an honourable death. Charge 5 looks very similar to a Huawei Band 7, and does similar things, I don't really get into all the compl;ication exercise tracking so I don't need GPS and all the other features. NFC payments is cool the first couple times, but unless they changed the clunky interface from the 4, it's quicker to use your phone

              • @rosebank: Yeah it's a lot better to the 4, couldn't even see that display outside in bright light.

True, NFC is there if you need it (ie if don't take phone or flat, or go for run etc) just have to unlock once a day.

Suppose they all similar, steps, sleep, hr and cal tracking is the main thing. The app pretty good

PS are you wearing those tissot you got cheap or flogged them off? Great brand and quality.

                • @G-rig: They are still in the box. I'm kinda liking the two-tone rose gold, but might give it to my dad who hates swiss watches. They were impulse buys for cheap, and would make great gifts for significant birthdays. I don;t even like Tissot, except for the Visodate.

                  • @rosebank: Great pick ups for a steal.. I have a seastar, the Powermatic 80 is a great movement (modified ETA2824).
I like the gentleman (and cheaper PR100) and a PRX would be good (I'd probably get the quartz, but still not as cheap as they were).

                    • @G-rig: Yes, forgot about the PRX. Love the case, hands, band, crown, everything. I'll grab one for a decent price, don't really care about movement.

Most "in-house" or rebadged swiss movements are just ETAs or Sellitas. It's like come on, you're not fooling anyone. But I concede that some mods are legitimate improvements.

                      • @rosebank: Yeah I'm keeping an eye out for a deal on the PRX too. I tried them on - would be nice if they were 38 or 39mm - lug-lug 51.5mm is a bit too much but doable.

(PS noticed catch has the blue Quartz for $450).

At least they are a good Swiss brand and both of those movements are recognised and reliable. Can't really go wrong with a NH34, 35 or 36 either for most stuff.

      • Nah, I think she has reached as tall as she'll get. Both her parents aren't exactly giants hehe.

I have a collection of watches, and we tried sizes on her wrist. I wear 40mm watches, and all of my 38mm-40mm were 140% too big. I did the math and figured a dial of around 30mm would be ideal.

I'm 150% sure this watch would be too big for her wrist! Trust me, I would have bought the watch otherwise, I don't know how I stopped myself in the first place.

    • +1

I would 110% purchase this on sight for my daughter,

This is going to sound similar to rosebank's comment.

But if you would 110% purchase this for your daughter. I think that extra 10% cancels out the dial being too large.
So -10%, means you would 100% purchase this watch as it is. No?

      • Math checks out

      • I have a small collection of watches. We tried a few sizes on her wrist, and the 38mm ones were far too big (in both my opinion as well as her own).

  • Citizen Yellow Auto $209

    Was $329

  • What's the Fugu got to do with pufferfish?

    • Pretty sure "Fugu" is a certain species of pufferfish in Japanese. The one that is poisonous that they prepare and eat.

If you mean "why Fugu?" Google says
"The watch's bezel has alternating smooth and serrated edges to provide a positive grip in wet conditions, with the shape inspired by the pufferfish."

      • No, I get that.

But what does this Fugu have to do with pufferfish?

        • +1

          Edited my comment above.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Oh yeah, I didn't even notice that, nice touch.

I was hoping to read a cool paragraph about its names inspiration on the page where it's sold.

But thanks for the g00gle, I didn't get that far into my research.. πŸ˜…

            Interesting colours too..

              @WasBargain:

I was hoping to read a cool paragraph about its names inspiration on the page where it's sold.

Yeah true I would have expected an explanation too. But I am a watch n00b when it comes to metal and expensive ones so maybe they just expect watch nerds to already know πŸ˜—.

              • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Hahaha, that is also a good point. There's a brief line about it being a special edition. But I guess watch nerds already know its significance. Or they do their own fair share of g00gling. πŸ˜…

Fellow watch nerd here too btw. Just bought the Bulova listed here a couple weeks ago and the blue one listed here a few weeks ago that was slightly cheaper.

Old man and I are going to have matching models when we finally get our life packed up here and moved back to dads original, Portugal. Fingers crossed these watches only sit in a dark cupboard for a few months.. πŸ˜…

                • +1

@WasBargain: Managed to find the post. Bulova seems to be very good value while still looking refined and stylish, a family brand of Citizen so they must be decent.
Very good choice for an ozbargain deal watch! πŸ‘

                  • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Oops, I meant to say fellow watch noob. πŸ˜…

Youtube doesn't seem to like Bulova but I really liked the first one, the two tone blue one that was $230 I think. Then this black one came up a week after so I bit the bullet for two for my old man and I. His favourite colour is blue so he should really like it, apart from me actually spending money on him.. πŸ˜…

Decent bargain too so should hold up some value hopefully. I really liked that Frank Sinatra use to use them, obviously they also sponsored some tv or radio show he had going in the day. It's been with an astronaunt to the moon or something at some point too. And it's the first company to ever buy an advertisement spot, back in July of 1941. 😁

I have a feeling some people have started to dislike it since the 2008 takeover of Citizen..

                    • +1

                      @WasBargain:

Youtube doesn't seem to like Bulova but I really liked the first one,

Yeah that's what I was going to do next. Look up Bulova watches on y00t00be and see what the y00t00bers had to say about them lol.

I have a feeling some people have started to dislike it since the 2008 takeover of Citizen..

I googled it and I think you mean 2008 takeover of Bulova by Citizen? (Bulova was originally a U.S. based company, and Citizen is Japanese)
I think it's a good think. I mean historically Japanese watch brands have been pretty successful compared to U.S. watch brands right.

                      • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Yeah, that's what I meant. I don't know why though. Even that chubby English watch reviewer mentions something about pre-2008 Bulova's being okay or something, but yeah, almost every other decent reviewer seems to not rank them very highly.. :-(

But then again, they're ranking it against brands like Fredric Le Jeune or Rolex and stuff.. πŸ˜…

                    • +1

@WasBargain: I think Bulova is meant to be alright, again it depends on the model as you can nitpick most watches.

                      • @G-rig: I hope so my dude. <3

I really like the look of them anyway as my first watch and at the price I don't think I can complain.. πŸ˜…

Keeping my eye out on an OzB post for the RM 25-01.. 🀣

                        • @WasBargain: Yeah that Bulova is a good looking watch for the price. Not too sure about the marine star theme but the face is not that different to the lunar pilot really (which are pretty trendy at the moment and more expensive).

      Poison, poison, tasty fish

  • +1

I got excited when I saw the thumbnail and thought the yellllow dial Steel Dives were on sale at last.

    • I have never seen them around SD1970 prices. Currently US$129.48 + GST.

Anyway that dial is too busy for my liking. I prefer this style.

      • Yes, it is a bit busy isn't it. I think the yellow(-ish) SteelDive dial that had caught my eye was the SD1974 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004835081966.html but it shares the same things I'm not so keen about with the SD1970 - the much larger casing and the steep-looking wall between the dial and bezel. I haven't seen any AliExpress homages to more modern, sleek and sporty watches with the same features as the SD1970 (sapphire glass, 20 bar WR, HN35 etc) which is a shame.

The Citizen NJ0170-83Z you linked here looks really nice to me (and I think there was a white dial with navy bezel recently too), though perhaps I'd prefer a 4 'o'clock crown for it to look perfect. Similar with the ivory Seiko, but again the 'wall' aroundthe dial looks a bit off in the picture.

I was very tempted by both, but perhaps my expectancies have been skewed by the SteelDives and recent Invicta prices.
43mm is probably going to be a bit large on my 7" wrist too.

        Thanks for your reply.

  • +2

Thanks @WatchNerd. Got the yellow Citizen, now I only need the white one to complete the set.

  • Noice one, the orange and yellow look great!

  • I ordered the yellow but what's the difference between eco drive and the auto?

    • +2

Eco-Drive is solar powered quartz and has 6+ months power reserve when fully charged.

Automatic is a mechanical movement with cogs and springs and jewels and shit. You have to wear it daily (depends on the power reserve, could be a week) so the spinny thing "charges" the springy thing and it keeps ticking.

  • Quick question- what are SRPD and SBSA, please?

    • SRPD denotes made Malaysia or China. SBSA denotes made in Japan

      • Ah okay. Thanks.
Presumably the SBSA are better. Does it differ from JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) models?

        • JDM and SBSA are better for maintaining their resale value. I believe SBSA are global releases.

  • I gotta say not a fan of the blue/black divers being called Batman's. I dunno why just isn't cool enough name for a watch TBH.

How about we call them Blyat-man's from now on lol.

Blyat (Π‘Π»ΡΡ‚ΡŒ) = Old Slavic word for Whore

A wrist that swaps watches everyday, is kind of a whore right? πŸ˜‚
I mean if you wrist has been ridden by every watch in town..

    • +2

It's just a nickname.. similar to red and blue being Pepsi and green is Hulk.

      • I think I just wanted to yell "whore" at my wrist every time I took my watch off.

  • Some nice watches but that promaster may just be the ugliest I've ever set eyes on

    • Not a fan of the roulette table I take it..

Weird claim is the face is a rose gold.. I mean, it's not but atleast they make the horrible band match.. πŸ˜…

  • Actually can someone clarify, I saw a youtube video and the yellow looks more so gold than a true yellow, or is it the colour grading in the video>?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeQDZzSAq3k

  • got the tiffany blue version of the NJ0170-83Z. really just bought it for the dial which is stunning. the rest of the watch was slightly disappointing:
    * case finishing is a bit bland as well as slightly too thick for my taste
    * bezel action is firm and smooth but has a hollow feel to it (hard for me to describe but it isn't like a seiko tuna)
    * crown a bit too small
    * most boring exhibition caseback ever lol. it's just one monotonous colour

    • The hands look a bit small too..
Pretty sure the bracelet would be a bit cheap..
$200 alright but can still get much better for that.

      • i'm okay with the hands…not mind-blowing but readable.
yeah i swapped out the bracelet straight away, first for a weird nato-style nylon strap in Gulf livery. but it was a low-quality strap, had some sharp edges and couldn't quite cope with the heft of the case. strapify had a sale at the time so i bought a matching tiff blue saffiano/fkm strap and it was a perfect match (not too happy that one of strap's integrated spring bars was a bit loose; kinda unacceptable for the $61 i paid).

tl;dr just wanted a watch with a tiffany blue dial and it actually gets quite a bit of wrist time.

        • Yeah sounds ok still, strapify isn't cheap but better quality than a lot of stuff on Ali etc. Shame straps cost a lot from those UK stores too.

I was suggesting the tiffany watch that was based on the explorer (I think), fixed bezel style (couldn't post link), think that style suits the colour.

i've also seen an addies dive with that same magnificent dial. wish i could get a solar since i have enough autos i don't wear ;)

            • +1

@tdw: Agreed, nice having a few solars and quartz in the collection to just pick up and go :).
I got a Seiko tuna solar and it keeps better time than all my autos, a square G-Shock Bluetooth solar, and a Daytona knockoff with a Seiko vk65 chronograph.

              • @G-rig: oh yes tunas are hard to beat (and the bezel action on those are orgasmic). would love one of those wr 1000m ultimate tunas one day

                • +1

@tdw: Ah yes, the quartz ones that were the size of an actual tuna can

    • But it's $200 and it looks good. I doubt you or most people are using the bezel, just be happy it aligns with 12 and leave it there, Exhibition backs are absolutely pointless for a for such a plain movement, just additional cost for a view of nothing.

      • i do use the bezel a lot actually, which may be strange for a desk diver like myself but i find it helpful to keep track of what i'm doing e.g. how long i'm at the shop waiting for markdowns lol. so yeah, bezel action matters to me.

        • I had a play with a couple dozen bezels. The Citizen is a bit rough, but fast and.. ultilitarian. Most satisfying is Arnies, Sumos, King Turtle and Sinn U1. Turtles (not the mini) and samurais are good, as are Tunas. I have a Russian CCCP one that clicks very authoritatively and is very loud. Fortis B42 GMT has a dull, but strong and silent clicks. Seiko SKX is a Seiko SKX,

Props to Timex Qs for having no clicks at all,

          • @rosebank: you sure know your bezels! ;)

            haha, so on brand

  • would love to get the orange citizen diver , but worried about strap replacement ….can’t convert to stainless bracelet and that rubber strap might only ever be citizen original part ….
