+1 for the comment that recognises the alternatives

    • +1

+1 because I don’t want to be left behind

  • Just an observation from my time on the beach over the past month; Cool Cabanas were absolutely everywhere. It was like it was an advertising site.
They were either a very popular Christmas present or people didn't worry about them being the most expensive, apparently.

    • +3

Saw a pic of Noosa beach the other day. Unbelievable. Like a shanty town. The best bit of course it was annoying all the right people who could afford holidaying in Hastings St.

      • +25

as long as people set them up at the back of the beach and and aren't blocking access for other people or lifesavers, anyone complaining about a bit of shade at the beach is a flog.

my mother had to have experimental radiation therapy on a melanoma that ended up on the back of her eyeball. shes slowly losing vision, but it saved her eye and her life.

Slip Slop Slap, people. skin cancer is still cancer.

        • +3

Imo they're better than umbrellas becuase they don't block your view to the water if people are sitting in front of you

      • +9

Like the COVID shots of the city beaches, they used a long lens to make it look more full than it really is.

Personally, I don't mind them, they are less disruptive to the view than other sun shelters and anything that keeps people from burning is a good thing.

      • +12

Better than a beach umbrella that turns into a javelin with a gust of wind

      • I was at Noosa a couple of weeks ago, they were everywhere. They were hiring them out right on the beach.

    • +3

They're well made and easy to assemble and pull down

    • +5

I think the Yellow Tail deal probably had a bit to do with it as well… =)

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734414

      • +1

I was surprised at how few yellow ones I saw. Only two for the entire summer, and I was at the beach a lot!

  • +2

Big W ones send to be low on stock or sold out completely where I am

    • +2

Same. No stock at all in metro Melbourne.

  • -8

Saw lots on the beach, but seems more a fad than anything else. The small sun shades seem to provide better sun protection, these seem more about "being seen"

    • +2

Pretty fantastic option if you have kids.
We have a big beachkit umbrella. Very happy with it and does not have as much…presence as a cabana.

    • +2

I can't vouch for this particular one but we've tried so many types of sun shade and this style are by far the best. Stable is a reasonable wind, high enough to sit under and the larger ones provide a good amount of shade. We're on our second as we upgraded to the bigger size and no regrets….

    • I dunno. People don't want to be seen by the sun's UV rays

  • +1

How do these fare in light to moderate winds?

    • +2

Pretty well - think of it as an umbrella with weighed down legs
The wind would have to be pretty intense to lift it up when it's held down at 5 points. You can easily add more weight to the legs (sand, bags etc) or hang towels under the umbrella if it's getting gnarly

A beach tent would probably do better if you point the back of the tent to the wind.. but it certainly wouldn't be fun setting it up or putting it down

      • +3

Agreed. I have a beach tent and they are the worst for setting up. I've seen the normal umbrellas and other shelters flying across the beach due to a little bit of wind. Coolcabanas are solid. They are a really good design and popular for a reason. And the fact they are getting copied are also a good sign.

    • +1

From the reviews on Spotlight's site - "Extremely disappointed with this cabana. If I could go back in time I wouldn’t buy it. We used it and it’s a very bad copy of the Cool Cabana. At the beach, with a medium breeze, the original cabanas didn’t move while this one flew away."

      • This seems to be the experience across all competitors… How can people copy something and make it worse?? Surely someone could've made an identical or better copy, and still undercut CoolCabana's marketing budget.

        • +1

the reviewer forgot to put sand in each leg pocket…

  • +2

Haha you’re still looking? I thought you managed to get one of the spotlight ones

    • +1

Nah, OOS everywhere near me. Closest ones to me are a Bunnings one 1h drive away, or… Kogan 😬

I posted this precisely to see if fellow OzBargainers have other options. The sun is forecasted to scorch us again next week in Qld.

      • +1

        Kogan 😬

There'll be no cabana then, I'll tell the children.

    • +1

I finally got one from a Bunnings far from me, while away on a trip.

      • +1

        Hope it’s worth

        • +1

Haven't tried it yet. We'll see. Otherwise… that's what return policies are for.

  • +3

Really want one of these but finding a place to store it would kill me

    • +2

At least with the cool cabana ones, they pack up very small! Super easy to pack away and carry around.

      • +2

Really? Might save up for one of those then. Space is a commodity for me.

  • +7

    +1 for yellowtail gang

    • Drank your wine yet? Mine's still on a shelf somewhere but the cabana's been tops.

      • I got the champagne. 3x cabanas.

Am using it to make aperol spritz’s. It’s going very nicely.

    • +2

      username checks out.

  • +1

How different are all the alternatives?

  • +7

I am normally the type to get the Kogan or Big W version but after doing a tonne of research, I went with the $200 coolcabana version. I know a windy beach is not great to be at, but I am hoping it is a case of buy it once and get the good quality version. We even got the $80 mat which hurt even more to buy but it fits the base perfectly and was a godsend with the baby crawling around.

I hate the fact that I am part of the masses with it but it was easy to use, light to carry and was solid as a rock when we went to the south coast in Jan (moderate winds). I hope that anyone getting a cheaper version has success with it, maybe I am just trying to justify my spend in this comment lol

    • +1

yea i agree with this, the Big w one firstly, doesn't have the screw in bottom, the sharp end just doesn't go into the sand deep enough or stays when wind is blowing

    • Did you consider the Bunnings one? Or how about Kogan's?

      • +1

        Never saw the Bunnings one.
The Kogan one had no reviews but I found a tonne of bad reviews on Dick Smith which is the exact same item.

        • Yeah, same company; DS is just a Kogan's cosplay now.

    • Ahhh I didn't know they had an under mat, that would be really handy but it's sold out. Wonder if there is anything else that would do the same job?

  • anyone see that article how councils might ban cabanas from beaches ?

    • +1

Meh. Seriously doubt it. What are gonna do; get the police to hand out fines to tourists? Yeah, right.

    • yeah just saw the news about cabanas taking too much space on the beach

  • +2

Good regular price, I got one at Kmart on clearance in winter for $29

Admittedly it's just an umbrella with legs you can weigh with sand so it is very stable - no more umbrella projectiles!
I'm not sure a branded one is worth up to 10x the price though

Have a beach tent but now it just sits collecting dust as this is so much quicker to setup, is lighter to carry and is cooler (as it doesn't trap heat). The pro of a beach tent is however the fact that you get an enclosed space should it get windy

    • Yeah, I never really got the beach tent thing. The whole point of going to the beach is enjoying the surrounds, not be stuck in a tent. Beaching is beaching; camping is camping, gringos.

      • +1

And tents block the view! With this style you can see straight to the water which is better for all.

  • +1

    No stock in Victoria 😕

  • +1

174x174 is tiny unless the sun is directly above you.

    Any deals on sand-free mats?

Can't find/lost our one. Works really well.

    • -2

So shadows decrease the closer the sun is to the horizon? Did you skip Physics in school? 😄

      • +3

        Confidentlyincorrect

        • -4

Also: who needs shade early in the morning or late in the afternoon anyway??

      • So you want to sit OUTSIDE the cabana to get out of the afternoon westerly sun?

    • This is what i dont understand about them. What is the point when there is only significant shade at midday?

      • +1

I was thinking about getting one because it’s such a good idea.

I went to the beach and the people next to me had one.

In the afternoon, they had no shade underneath but it did shade us which I appreciated haha

I’ll stick with my beach tent.

        • LOL!
They didnt ask you to move out of 'their' shade?

  • Grab it and head straight to Noosa Beach!

  • +1

anyone have a wall add-on for these to get more shade?

    • Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of having a cabana instead of a beach umbrella that gets blown away by ocean gusts?

  • +3

I always wonder, how many Ozbargainers account for the % of spending that keeps increasing our interest rates =P

    • +2

      Shopshaming

    • -1

What do you think spending $49 on a sun shade has to do with increasing interest rates on my mortgage?

      I'm genuinely asking.

      • +1

        It’s all discretionary retail spend.

        • Discretionary spending is not a new phenomenon. I'm still not seeing the supposed link to the recent increase in interest rates.

          • @tromboc: Spitballing here:
            - Reason for central banks increasing interest rates is to slow inflation
            - The idea being that you increase the costs everyone has (mortgage), then they have less money leftover for discretional spending (e.g. beach cabana)
            - As everyone reduces their spending, the demand for goods decreases
            - As the demand decreaces, the supply catches up. Once supply is greater than demand, prices stop increasing (aka inflation slows/stops).

A beach cabana is made out of raw materials, so its not just the price of beach cabanas we're talking about, but plastic, fabric, steel, labour to build & sell them, the person working at the iron ore mine that drives the haul truck, etc.

I don't have a mortgage though, so going to buy one 🤣

  • +1

Anyone have the Kmart one and rate it?

    • +1

Ended up grabbing the Kmart one for $55. Seems ok with a quick unpack. Will see how it fairs on the beach.

  • +1

    Showing as $69 for me.

    • +1

It changed to $49 once I selected a store.

      • +1

Thanks - no stock anywhere near me :(

  • No stock in my country :)

  • +1

The ones with the removable side are the worst. The velcro is a thin stip and a good gust it comes off. Whereas the ones where they are stitched in seem to be more stable

  • Thanks got 2 just in case

  • It’s literally an umbrella

    • Its not as good as an umbrella because you cant angle it into the sun and change the angle as the sun moves. Unless its midday you'll be hiding in a corner or sitting outside?

  • +1

Councils should plant more shade-providing vegetation at the back of beaches so that people like myself don't have to rely so much on bringing in cabanas and the like.

But given how few Councils (especially those in the less wealthy areas) provide sun protection in public open space areas such as shade sails at playgrounds, I doubt that will happen any time fast.

    • Yes.
They also shouldnt have bulldozed all the vegetation in the first place! Just so rich people could have views. Its extremely destructive to the environment in multiple ways.
The sweet irony when their house start washing into the sea because there is no vegetation to keep the beach in that place.
But then of course the rich people whine and get the council to build hideous destructive seawalls and cement beaches.
