  • How much is early termination?

    • +1

If terminating the plan immediately, your Samsung Galaxy S23 essentially costs (($69 x 24)/2) + $69 (prorated) = $828-$897 and on top of that you get a bonus $100 HN gift card

      • I would think double for an immediate cancellation? Surely you're not getting away with half of the cost and as a result a cheaper than RRP phone.

        • The above calculation is correct, no gift card on the $69 though.

Need to edit the post - no gift card inc

          • @farque: I'll let someone else with the stones do it first. I don't trust 'em!

            • +3

@Chip Diamond: haha standard T+C's from the last billion $69 plans we have done…

            • +7

@Chip Diamond: I did it on this deal for the S22 on a 24-month $49 plan, 1 x 128gB and 1 x 256gb. I was charged in full for the first month (some OzBargainers overturned this I think) and then half of what the plan would have cost. We just paid $100 in the shop for the memory upgrade. So, $650 and $750.

We cancelled the Optus plan over the phone after about a week. I just told them I'd made a mistake and knew that I would have to pay the cancellation fees. They never asked about the phone. I assume that was HN's part of the deal.

It took about a month for the cancellation fee to hit my account. For a while there I thought they might have been free phones, but I'm still very happy with the deal.

    • Am i reading this correct? There are also gift cards included in this deal?

      • +2

        Only with outright purchases

        • What does that mean? If i go with the offer that is $599 upfront and $69/month optus plan is that not outright?

          • @gsxr600rr: No its not. As you have used a plan to subsidise some cost of the device

  • Guess who feels like an idiot for signing up to this plan last month and only getting a $400 gift card :(

    • $69 plan was and still is $700 last month?

      • Actually you are right i think it was $700. Still way worse than this deal

        • +1

yes it is, was trying to make you feel a little better….. to be fair, we only got told yesterday what it was gonna be.

    • just port over a prepaid sim then cancel it

  • +2

Never been with Optus, I guess that's a good thing , no data leaks. But how good is Optus when it comes to reception and 5G speeds/ coverage?

    • +1

      Telstra > Optus > Vodafone
      Hope this helps.

      • I work on regional trains in Victoria and in my experience telstra is far worse than optus except maybe on the Bendigo line.

        • Can’t say anything about coverage in the regional areas. So I guess it depends where you live or travel mostly. As coverage by all Telcos in Australia is very patchy

      • +3

I have had both Telstra and Optus for years in metro area Optus is better in any aspect, reception, 4G, 5G
I actually have never experienced anything special with Telstra, I think it is just a good reputation from 20 years ago
Customer service wise Optus is terrible

    • When I moved into a new house and my Telstra reception was absolute trash I bought prepaid sims of Vodafone and Optus to test if they would be any better.
It was quite successful, Optus turned out to be better in that area for whatever reason.

    • +2

Receiption in my case is worse than vodafone. But custmer service is completely shit.

    • When I travel from Melbourne to Mildura, my little one's ipad plays continuous without dropouts… If she's not complaining then I know it's working…

  • I think this is a decent deal, similar to the Pixel 7 Pro deal which was very popular.

Essentially you can get S23 Ultra 512GB for $1,177 + 1 mth prorated fee (max $69).

    Upfront $599
    Termination fee ($69*24/2= $828)
    less HN gift card ($250)

    Total: $1,177 + a bit.

    • Can anyone confirm this will work or will they block it somehow?

      • +1

What can they block? Just need to make sure to keep the contract until you actually get the phone and the gift card.

        • Could they cancel the gift card for eg, unless you've spent it before you terminated the plan.

          • @binary101: Based on past experience, no. In the same way, there is no way they can take the phone back or block them. The terms and conditions you sign up for are that you pay whatever termination fee when you cancel the contract.

          • +1

@binary101: Cant cancel gift cards, no.

There is not gift card on top of the $69 deal.

            • @farque: Just saw your other post, no gift cards unless buying outright.

Making the the overall cost to be $599 + $828 + ($69 prorated?) = $1496. Still not bad but not a must buy if it was ~$1177.

              • +1

                @binary101: Thats it!

Cheapest way i can find currently.

            • @farque: That's a pity!

    • +3

That means this deal is about $1,427, given there is no HN gift card for the $69 plan, if you get charged $0 for the first month.

The Samsung Edu/Corporate store is about $1798/$1799 … but, you get a $200 bonus trade in (assuming return a phone worth $1), less free included Samsung Care (cost $249)…. so, $1,348 for the phone.

This means it is is about $79 cheaper to get from Samsung directly, rather than this deal…. IF you value Samsung Care at $249, and have a phone to return to Samsung, and would have to pay $0 for the first partiall month to Optus using the deal…. If you don't have a phone to return, this Harvey Norman deal is about $18 more expensive, if you value Samsung Care at $249.

If you value Samsung Care at, say, $125, and dont have a phone to return, then this deal is about $107 more valuable than Edu/Corp store… but, you might have to pay an extra $69 for the first month….. which makes this only $38 more valuable…

But, the benefit of Edu/Corp store is not dealing with Optus and Harvey Norman….

Back in the day, it was really simple to work out what the best deal was:@

      • You also get evoucher on Samsung Edu store that you have to redeem in the same order.

        • I'm 0/4 requests to get one, but, yes, good point for those that do have one.

I also asked for one about 55 hours ago, and they said "back office" would email me a special 10% off code in the next 24-48 hours…. that hasn't come through either!

      • +1

youve done bloody well to work this one out!

      • "That means this deal is about $1,427, given there is no HN gift card for the $69 plan, if you get charged $0 for the first month."
Sorry, no this is not totally correct.

According to Optus' T&Cs the cancellation fee is half of the outstanding contract:
If you immediately cancel and don't get charged the initial month's charge then the total is $69x24/2 = $828
If you get an invoice for the initial month's charge then the total works out to be $69+($69x23/2) = $69+$793.50 = $862.50
Since there is no upfront charge for the S23 these are the full amounts for each case.

For the S23+ and S23Ultra just add the extra upfront charges of $299 or $599 respectively.

And yes it appears that with the Optus deal you don't get the HN gift card.

      • I have an old crack screen Note8 64 to trade in. So which option is best in my situation? I don't care much about Samsung Care. Last night I tried to grasp S23U 512 deal but the online trade in function not working, so I could not go ahead and hence missed out 8% cashback!

      • If trade in phone is not qualified and disapproved by Samsung then this HN deal is better! :D But I doubt there would be such a csse?

    • I would like to buy on this deal then sell for 1800.

    • There is no Gift Card for this deal. GC is only offered on outright purchases.

  • Does Optus offer any international calling packs?

    • Not on this plan. Get a cheap/essentially free pre-paid sim plans like Boost.

    • Yes you can add them for $10 per month, depending on the country.

  • Is S23+ offered? If so, anyone know the upfront price? I assume $300 upfront.

    • S23+ not offered.

      • Its offered for sure.

        • +1

I went to the S23+ page and it doesn't have the offer. Is it advertised elsewhere?

        • Also wondering where I can see this?

  • +1

Yep, basically $1349 discount off any of the launch modles (including the free storage upgrade)

    • Any trade-in bonus?

      • Not during the pre order period.

        • Right, kinda crappy offerings from all the stores when this was the standard promo last year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/682372

Why isn't the S23+ in the advertising at the bottom of your page?

          • @Techie4066: Dunno.

            • @farque: Then it's unclear how much the + is upfront

              • +1

                @Techie4066: I agree.

                s23+
                512GB is $299

256gb is same price so not worth it..

                • +1

                  @farque: Thanks. Looks like this is the best outright S23 deal then. Can't beat S23 256GB $828 / S23+ 512GB $1127.

                  • +1

@Techie4066: Yeah it is from what I can see around the traps. Good for a change to be cheapest! haha

                    • @farque: Quick question, would the plan begin when I pick up the phone? And do you reckon some stores might throw in the bonus gift card?

                      • +1

@Techie4066: Plan will begin from when you sign the contract - but phone wont be ordered for you until you sign up so maybe pay for 2 weeks usage?…

Unlikely regatding the gift card as we essentially use the gift card amount to get to the $1349 discount value.

                        • @farque: I see, and a couple other things - can I pay the upfront price with gift cards as normal, and what are the chances of a $49 plan deal down the track? That $588 S22 was very attractive :)

                  • @Techie4066: Just note that there is no GC in this deal.

  • I was with Optus for a while, then went to Moose (still Optus network but cheaper plans. Would I still qualify for this deal or would I have to port out to Telstra or whoever first?

    • +1

yep if your number currently isnt with Optus on a bill, you qualify.

      • I currently have a 24 month plan with optus for an s21 from May 2021 i.e. expiring early May 2023. What are my options if I want this deal? Could I cancel the plan and port out number and sign up to this easily or not?

        Thanks

      • I just called Harvey Norman to ask as im with optus currently but out of contract. They said I i could change my number to prepaid with optus, then i would be eligable to resign to this deal. Are you familar with this? Everyone in the comments seems to think you have to leave optus and come back.

  • So if one can sign up to this deal, and then terminate the plan straight away, you only have to pay out half of the plan total, but what if you wait 12months and then cancel the plan, do you pay nothing, or you still have to pay the last half?

And if this is one of the cheapest deals, why not so popular…

    • You pay half of the remainder of your contract ($69 x 12 / 2)

      • hmm, well it would be cheaper to just stay on plan rather than pay out half and then continue to pay for a different sim/plan/prepaid… Unless people already have 5g plans that provide same data for $20/pm.

        • If you are ready for a bit of work, there are cheaper ways to use mobile, etc make use of Boost deals.

But I agree this will be one of the best value for those wanting to take out on a plan.

    • +2

optus is the reason this deal is not so popular. They dont care about individual customers that much. mediocre network, if you don't get good reception it is noone's fault & in most cases nothing can be done from their side (including cancelling your plan-refund etc) and if, god forbid you had to contact customer service they wouldn't know what to do.

I once moved to anotehr address and they did not provide broadband there, they still wanted to charge me $69 a month for remaining 18 months and I spent 2 months fighting & finally giving written proof to Telecommunications Ombudsman (records like 6 times I had to call optus, each time it took at least 20min to connect and after all those 6 times they still kept sending me bills). Then i left optus. 11 years later the fukcers were still storing my data which went online for anyone to see.

  • This deal with early termination S23 Ultra 512Gb for $1496
    OR
    Pre-order double storage offer S23 Ultra 1tb for $1949

    • It depends on whether 512 GB of extra storage is worth $450.

      • what's the actual cost of extra 512gb?

        • +1

          $400 RRP
But the cost to manufacture - nowhere near that

    • Made a mistake on the 1tb price. It should be $2249.

Looks like this deal is worth dealing with Optus to get the 512gb.

    • You still get the storage upgrade with this deal…

      • Could you please clarify how much it would be for the 1TB ultra? Just trying to figure out if it's the $599 deal - so the 512gb gets automatically upgraded to 1TB?

    • It's $900 upfront for S23 Ultra 1tb.
      So it's $900 + $828 +$ 69 = $1797

  • The link just takes me to the outright purchase i
Option. How do i see the 24 month offer?

    • In store only, I think

    • Scroll right to the bottom of the page and you can see the offer but you can only sign up in store

  • +1

Cheers OP! Just signed up for a Black Ultra 512. Such a great deal! Suits me perfectly except I had to get a new number as I'm already an Optus customer. No big deal TBH.

    • How did they allow this if you are an existing customer? Did they not have your details on record and you have an existing login with your email etc? I am same position.

Also why can't you not just port in your existing number after?

      • you can port out and port in

        • I'll be keeping my existing service for a while but does this mean I can port my existing number over later if I want?

          • +2

@SteveAndBelle: No the contract is attached to the number, so the number you get is what it will stay as.

  • Looking at the S23. Will phone be locked to optus? i have a boost sim so plan would be to sign up and cancel next day and use boost sim

    • +2

Nope, you’re buying the phone from Harvey Norman which comes unlocked. Optus funds it to HN

      • +2

Thank you. So this looks best offer in my case for S23. Compared to edu store jb etc. Thanks op

        • +2

No worries and yup that’s right! Harvey Norman did run two similar promos in the past, the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22
