Don't buy UK routers, they are limited to half the TX power output

    • Is it possible to increase the max TX power output by changing the location setting?

      • +6

negative, I would only buy UK stuff if you live in a small apartment - I have their version of TUF 5400 and now in a larger house it struggles and drops out streaming to 4k tv,
on the lookout for a good auzzie one, Asus though

It is possible on some ASUS models with Broadcom chipsets using merlin firmware, logging in via SSH and changing the txpower config. However, not everyone has success with this. Results vary by ASUS router model. Details here.

Some users also reported a successful change on the txpower config, however, the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values remained the same and no improvement in the wi-fi signal strength. This suggests the chipset may be hardcoded and locks the txpower value irrespective of the configuration in the firmware.

The RT-AX89X is also based on a Qualcomm chipset and not Broadcom, which means there are no plans for merlin firmware support.

Personally, I would not buy a UK router.

    • I wonder if changing the region setting would also affect the output power?

      • You can't change the region… UK ones are locked to EU spec.

        • +1

That truly sucks. Glad I have UI gear …

    • +1

Great information to know. I wasn't aware of it. This price is great in relation to AU price, if it will be the same specs.

    • -5

You just reflash it with Australian firmware… Definitely worth a mention but it's not an issue

      • +3

There's no such thing as 'Australian firmware'. The hardware is hard coded with the EU restrictions. If merlin was available then you could in theory run a script to adjust the max TX output but its not available on this router.

        • +1

That’s something I’m completely ignorant to.
I’ve tried googling it and searching reddit but I can’t find anything about it.
If you get a chance could you throw me a bone explaining the uk vs au market?

        • Best I could find was the Wikipedia list of WLAN channels…
Don’t see much of a problem. Am I missing something very obvious?
          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

    • good catch never knew that.

    How many antennas?
    Asus: Yes

  • +1

Nice bit of Kit but No merlin support i dont think …….

    • +1

No merlin support because this ASUS router uses a Qualcomm chipset (currently, merlin only works on Broadcom-based ASUS routers).

Bugger - the AU version of this is amazeballs for the distance - shame about the UK hamstringing.
Bought for the office and we can see it 3x floors away (Open center of the building type thing)

    • Weird. I had an AU version and the 5ghz was grand, but 2.4ghz suuuuuucked. Couldn't work out why. Replaced with an RT-AX68S and the 5ghz wasn't anywhere near as good, but the 2.4ghz worked as expected.

      • Bummer. I'm combining the bands as one net and the staff are very happy with it.
Mostly iphones and samsungs on it + the odd macbook and asus laptop.

Friends don't let friends buy overseas Routers.

  • Lots of bad reviews about overheating and loud fans on this model. Would look at the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 instead but its $150 more

    • -2

For that sort of coin I'd consider building my own router.

      • +2

For that sort of coin I'd consider building my first house

        • For the $500+ that model costs you could build quite the router. Sorry if this came across sarcastic, it was meant genuinely.

          • @[Deactivated]: I didn't neg you. I have no idea what you mean tho.. A raspberry pi / pc ?

            • @justtoreply: Yeah exactly. For $600 you could get a ubiquity ap, a decent switch and pfsense on one of the $200 pcs that pop up as deals. Would smoke basically everything on the market. Only tricky part might be needing 2 ethernet ports on the pc.

    Doubles as a fruit bowl

  • May as well wait for WiFi 7 coming onto the market soon.

    • +1

And then another 20 years till Aussie net speeds are fast enough to make sure of it

      • +2

Don't need 20 years to take advantage of the 6GHz band to improve latency and avoid congestion.

I have the AU version of this router. It is a good router. It is placed in my home office which is also my bedroom. The fans are not too noisy, and it has a Fan Tuning setting to setup the speed of the fans. It runs hotter than my previous router RT-AC88U (CPU wise), but I don't think it is a problem. It has better range the the RT-AC88U in both frequencies. I had to reboot every 4 weeks or so, even though the last firmware upgrade has made a difference. I had to reboot it after 3 months. I have up to 45 wireless devices with no performance issues. The AC88 started having a lot of performance issues when it got over 30. I love the 8 Ethernet ports.

    • I have the RT-AX88U & TUF-AX3000 (iMesh) and have to reboot it weekly for some reason.

      • I've had to do that with Asus devices before. Can be automated.

But as far as I'm concerned, that's not suitable. Shouldn't have to accept things like that.

        • How do you automated it?

          • +3

@congo: I'm 99% certain the stock firmware allows an automatic reboot option.

            Should be a scheduler.

Haven't done it in a while. Using TP Link now without any issues.

            • @scuderiarmani: I manually click the Reboot button.
Was hoping I could setup a "Reboot every Friday night" schedule or something…

              • -1

@congo: I'm sure you can. Check settings. Likely under the last few options. Sorry don't have the Asus UI infront of me atm.

              • +7

@congo: Advanced Settings, System (Tab), Basic config, Enable Reboot Scheduler

      • I have almost the exact same setup. Never had an issue.

        • How many wireless devices do you have? I started having issues when I got around 30 wireless devices connected.

          • @OMan: probably 15-20 clients, usually 8 wired.

  • +2

Reminds me to order some instant knockdown crawling insect spray.

  • +1

So according to the specs, it doesn't include batteries, doesn't require batteries, doesn't include a rechargeable battery, and requires a lithium ion battery. Gottit.

    • I found that confusing, too. It turns out that it only needs a battery if you want it to catch any household pests

    • The battery is for when you want to use the comfortable elastic straps to use it on the go lol
