Would this fit a 10 year old boy? Or can someone recommend something more suitable? Son wants a watch for his birthday. Would have to be ok for swimming pool - that's how his last one watch broke.

Suggest something from Casio's youth series.

I had a quick look on the eBay store. If you have eBay plus, theres:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/264024222946 $124.90 shipped, which is blacked out, arguably harder to read, but the kids will love it for the "drip".

It's also smaller than the one in this post and more suitable for a 10yo. Search "G-Shock 5600" and pick the one your son likes.

Edit: theres a lot here, and free shipping with the code on bottom of the screen free Kogan First trial for 14 days: https://www.kogan.com/au/deals/casio-dw-5600/

Sorry, free shipping is for tvs and stuff

    • can get a true og casio watch ;

CASIO F91W-1 Unisex Black Digital Watch with Black Band https://amzn.asia/d/a0mWfaQ

theres been mixed reviews about water resistance on this, never had any issues with mine in the swimming pool, but at that price point you wont be sweating it

    • He could grow into it and would last him a long time - but maybe best reserved for a future birthday if he likes more traditional Casios / G-shocks?

There are probably smaller, cheaper options as listed below, which may fit better too like the DW5600 (G5600-E if you want solar >$115).

I'd advise against a negative display to start with, much harder to read. This is what I'd get, solar version and no battery worries for +10y
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/132977697056
($149 from amazon, I was going to sell mine for $115 but kept it for now)

This classic is fun, world time .. $99 but can get for ~$40 ebay amazon etc.
      https://casiowatches.com.au/products/ae1200wh-1a

Ps. Watch Direct has a $10 discount (email signup popup I saw).
Pps. Not sure on that colourway but looks alright - dont' think it has lume on the markers?

      • dont' think it has lume on the markers?

casioaks never have lume on the markers, just the hands :(

        • Yeah wish they did - wouldn't have been much effort to add that, and makes a nice difference before having to use the light button.

I thought I saw a video where some new models do but hard to find it - pehaps the expensive models with bluetooth.

          • @G-rig: it's kinda why i gravitate towards the gravitymaster range ;)

there's always those luminous indices mods you can buy for the casioaks but it's expensive for what they are.

            • @tdw: Cool will have a better look at those.

They are quite different though - lots going on.. and much chunkier, thicker like traditional G-shocks..
Great if that's what you're after. Someon like the rock wearing them would be fine haa

Actually these new ones look pretty good - still fairly light, thin and wear nice:
              https://gshock.com.au/products/gab001-1a
(they have some lume on the indicies i think)

              • @G-rig: yeah the gravs are massive but still somewhat wearable on my 6.5" wrist.

do like the look of the new gab. no lume on the indices according to this video https://youtu.be/ELfuZKxMEa4?t=314 but has double LED light. really wish all new g-shocks come with autolight and carbon core as standard

                • @tdw: True, same size wrist here.
Auto EL is a must, which is why I like the squares. Still not as responsive as my Fitbit, their display technology is really good now compared to the charge 4 (which you couldn't even read in bright light).

The main thing is getting something that is fairly legible, otherwise it's a bit pointless.

May as well get rid of my solar G5609E-1 and the negative Bluetooth one (with the blue surround). The module on the Bluetooth is what I want, with DD-MM. And see if I can get a gw-b5600mg-1. Same module but positive.

Modding with adhesive polarising film seems like a bit of a stretch.

    • The smallest Gshock is the DW-5600. It has 2 gaskets on the pushers and is is unlikely to let water in.

For something thin with a smaller band. AE1200WH is a great watch.

      https://www.amazon.com/Casio-AE1200WH-1A-World-Multifunction…

Or solar and sporty STL-S100H. My last one of these let water in after 4 years of swimming. Swim goggles make vision difficult to you need a clear display and preferably bigger buttons. Has a good stopwatch.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/382811618321

    • My 10 year old can wear this no problems.

      He's about 150cm and 36kg for reference.

      • Ok. Done.

    • Not sure why most of the suggestions have been digital watches, when I think you were after analog.

But the GA2100 series (Casioak) are known to wear larger than the dimensions suggest, so a lot of a young/skinny adults even find the watch face too big.
Which would be fine for "growing into".

But if you want a smaller analog design Casio with all the water resistance and shock protection, look at the Baby-G range. e.g. this one
      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/casio-baby-g-analoguedigital-bl…

100m water resistance, weighs 33 grams. 3 year battery life.
      Details here https://www.casio.com/intl/watches/babyg/product.BGA-250-1A/

This is just one of the lightest and lower priced examples I found sorting by Light-Heavy.

      • I was looking at Baby-Gs all night and have 31 in my cart. I'm definitely getting this one:https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/watch-kings-baby-g-bga280-3a-6912302088285/ because seafoam is such nice colour. The G-MS ones are also nice.

        I don't thin a 10yo will wear a Baby-G. But there's plenty of 5600s for around $120: https://www.kogan.com/au/deals/casio-dw-5600/

        • "I was looking at Baby-Gs all night"

lol I get you. Sometimes I go on G-shock model tangents and just look at all the models on Casio global. Sometimes I find models I didn't know existed because the line up is so huge.
e.g. this GMD-B800 (didn't know they existed) I posted is a mini sized GBD800 (I knew about this model).
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/752517

I am currently interested in this GBD800 colour https://au.firstclasswatches.com/casio-g-shock-green-bluetoo…
I think the "army green" case will make the lighter coloured green negative LCD digits "pop" a bit. Can't be sure until I can get a look at it in person though, maybe I can find a store nearby that has it.

          "I don't thin a 10yo will wear a Baby-G."

You mean because of the branding?? Maybe, I didn't consider that. Yeah youngsters are still developing their personality so little things like that might bother them or make them self conscious about being made fun of by their friends I guess..

      • +1

Huh? The GA2100 actually wears smaller than its dimensions suggest.

        • I should have wrote "wears larger on small wrists than the dimensions suggest".

But yeah I have had a few comments here on ozbargain from thin wristed people saying the GA2100 looks too large on their wrist and doesn't fit well. So I suggested them to have a look at the smaller GMA-S2100's.

        • Forgive me I am not an expert in analog watch community.

What I meant was the GA2100 "looks larger" then the dimensions suggest, most likely because the watch face is quite large say compared to a diver style watch.
Maybe "wears larger" and "looks larger" are not the same thing.

My point is for the 48.5 × 45.4 × 11.8 mm dimensions the Casioak looks pretty big on a small wrist. Kind of the opposite problem of a diver style watch, where if you go too small it looks too small on the wrist because of the thick bezel.

    • Here is a cheaper analog Casio in G-shock style I just came across.
      https://www.catch.com.au/product/casio-general-quartz-mw-610…

It's dimensions are similar to the GA2110 in this deal, but the watch face is smaller so it will probably suit a smaller wrist better.
10 year battery life, 100m water resistant. No Baby-G logo.

At the price the calendar date (small number at 3 a clock) is likely not perpetual calendar, so either should be ignored or needs to be adjusted once a month.
(for a kid I would lean towards ignore, because regularly fiddling with the crown increase chances of ruining the water resistance)

    • Ended up getting the orange/black Flik Flak.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/G-Shock-CasiOak-Carbon-Core-Guar…

$149 shipped on their eBay store if you have plus

    • good price

      • Seems to be the regular price for casioaks these days, I've seen these and others for around $120

Honestly don't want to be that discouraging newbie deal downvoter, but when you can find a cheaper price with a 5 second google search..
(I found that eBay listing too)

Do yourselves a favour and get a galaxy watch. Bands are cheap. So many differenclt faces, LTE means dont even need phone to answer calls, apart from the other things it measures like your sleep, stress and ecg for old cunce.

    • +3

I refuse to get into smart watches, not really necessary if you've got a phone in your pocket. Also hard to justify whilst I wear a proper watch on my left hand :). I like them but the tech outdates pretty fast and you're spending $400-600+ on something that will be out of date in a minute.

I have and recommend the Fitbit Charge 5, much better battery life (~7 days), don't need another thing to charge every day but each to their own. If you were in the apple ecosystem I guess you'd end up with an apple watch..

      • -4

Once you get the LTE version your life will change trust me. Dont need to be connected to bluetooth so watch battery lasts 4 to 6 days. Can leave my phone on charge and go to the shops or go for a walk never worry about missing a call or text

        • +1

yeah that's pretty cool. I still think you'd be charging it every day.

don't think anyone would go anywhere without their phone though (unless going for a run outside- good time to tune out and have time to yourself anyway).

Agree though - I can't justify spending too much on digital watches that aren't smart (some G-shocks go for $1200), but $100-200 is pretty reasonable for a fun watch.

        • Really 4 to 6 days? With lte? Maybe if no one call or text? Whoch galaxy watch is this we talking. Im sure not galaxy watch 3.

What I read is once you get the lte model you will hate smart watch because they chew battery like no tomorrow. Especially if you also do run with it (gps)

          • @CyberMurning: "What I read is once you get the lte model you will hate smart watch because they chew battery like no tomorrow. Especially if you also do run with it (gps)"

Yeah LTE is absolute highest drainer of battery. GPS used to be the highest (with good battery life watches, roughly -1 day per 1 hour of GPS use), but GPS battery drain seems like almost nothing compared to LTE.

Even Apple Watch Ultra cannot last 24 hours off the charger when just using it by itself (LTE) with no phone. I saw an extensive test in a video. People might say "it's not realistically accurate" but I disagree. The person testing used the watch like they would have used their phone if they had it, so it was realistic in my opinion. People can't stop checking and using their phones throughout the day, so it would be the same for the Watch Ultra if that was all you had on you.

            • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Yeah i heard lte works by keep searching for best signal. Good luck with that in Australia. If you live ontop of telstra building maybe okay

              • @CyberMurning: "If you live ontop of telstra building maybe okay"

Yeah honestly I don't think even that can save it. If you are disconnected from phone pairing and using LTE it will just drain battery heavily, but yes on the beach probably even worse.
Technology is just not there yet to make LTE efficient.

                • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Its the battery technology that stuck with lithium since dinosaur age. Now company telling us this cpu 10% more efficient and people think amazing!. But then it get bogger screen, extra resolution, more features, ending up 15% worse than previous model lol…

                  • @CyberMurning: Yeah similar issue with smartphones, but it's basically "same battery life as before" instead of worse than previous model phone because of the efficiency gains minus the features they add. And also people wanting designs to be "thinner and thinner" with the screen "bigger and bigger" so that also makes it worse. But they have to try to give what the people want and most people just want "everything".

      • I had a Charge 4 that saved my wrist in a motocycle accident (rip homie). The i went to Mi band 6 and the heart rarte monitor was garbage, like I'll be doing deadlifts and my heartrate is most definitely over 150 but the Mi Band shows 60-70 or something. Got a Samsung Watch 4 Classic, GPS turned off, no LTE, would last 2 days max, so basically charging everyday. Currently using a Huawei Band 7 which I got for $90 and I like it, much better than Mi Bands imo
