  • wow That's a great Bargain Thanks for the post!

  • Excellent Bargain.
    Keep it up K-Mart. lol

  • I'm liking that 82 litre mini freezer for $100, it can keep things icy :P and it's the only thing there with a decent energy rating which makes me wonder if there are some legislation changes coming into effect soon relating to selling of low energy efficient appliances so they're getting rid of these…

  • That is an EXCELLENT find. Now while the bar fridge is extremely cheap there's several things to consider:

    1/ The compressor quality
    2/ The energy it consumes

But with regards to a $79 pricepoint, that's fantastic.

  • WOW WOW WOW Bought this afternoon a new washing machine, dryer and freezer for all together less than $370!! Thank you so much for this great find!

PS: regarding their reasons, now I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I've chatted with the k mart rep about this - he explained that there have been some management back & forth decisions about whether to stock white-good items or not. Apparently they re-ordered lots after a positive decision, but it has been revoked again and now they wanna get rid of the overstock.

  • I was in Kmart yesterday, (it is one of my favourite stores for finding a bargain), and I saw this lot of discounted equipment displayed prominantly.
What struck me that the energy ratings for most of them was quite low- for e.g two stars for Washing Machine.
The washing machine was advertised as being on Sale- ( 8 KG Homemaker top loader some 500 AUD off?? from 799 to 299? This is from memory, so figures might be wrong EDIT: Downloaded the voucher and this is indeed the case).

When you consider that you are going to keep a washing machine for at least two- maybe three years- and with the current rate of electricity and water - (I paid AUD 600 for Electricity for this quarter, I have energy saving globes, with all equipment rated 4 star and above for electricity.)- it makes sense to think through - as the cost is initial investment plus running cost.

I have not even started on the water rating for a washing machine (Sydney Water still gives 150 AUD rebate for at least 4½ star rated washing machines- they revised from 4 stars to 4½ star stars a few months back I think).

I am pretty sure that if I bought this washing machine, I would be spending more money on running this machine during its lifecycle than a more expensive equipment, which will give me better returns by saving money each month!

While the deals are pretty good-so I am giving +1, I would just caution any buyers "Think before you buy." If a deal is too good to be true- it usually is ;-)

    EDIT:
Some of the others like the freezer is quite good, since it has a high energy rating, and if you love to stock stuff, this can be your mini cold storage.

  • Excellent bargain mate. I'm going to get the 112 litres bar fridge today and hopefully they'll have stock left. Thanks.

Some good tips here but sometimes these need to be taken in perspective.

    1. A Dryer doesn't have a good energy rating for any model as they are all energy "inefficient". The ones recommended by the consumer magazine all had 2 stars (or close to that in the photo's on their report) For the cheapest it was $399 to buy. Use a clothes line if you want to save power

    2. This consumer magazine last rated bar fridges about 5 years ago. In that the energy difference between top and bottom for 10 years was $100, whereas the lowest price for a chinese made fridge was $267. So the math here is you would be a $100 ahead if their cheapest model was the most energy efficient. Their biggest gripe for bar fridges was the lack of ice-making on some models.

    3. In Sept 2008 8KG washing machines running costs varied at $700 over 10 years whereas cheapest to run cost $2000. But with washing machines there are many other factors like how good it washes etc. Likewise as you said rebates do have an impact but not all states offer these.

    • Ozpete,
You are right and thanks for clearing it up. I was specifically mentioning the washing machine. A good washing machine can be as less as 600 AUD after 150 AUD rebate. And they would recover the cost within three years- plus as you mentioned, wash quality is different, and some front loaders take better care of clothes etc.

  • Great Bargain, I just grabbed a 120L bar fridge for $79 !!!

Yes they are a little inefficient, but how long do you think it will take to offset around $140 in upfront capital saving.

I'd suggest a lifetime of electricity use.

    Love this website.

    • Considering the 120L fridge consumes 315kWh per year (on average) — if you are paying $0.20 per kWh, it will cost you $63 to run it every year. Also it probably comes with a 12 month warranty. If it stops working soon after that, are you going to add it to landfill?

Personally I'd prefer that bar fridges were illegal because they are a convenience thing (not a necessity like regular fridges).

      • You've obviously never been a uni student or lived on a uni campus, bar fridges are the only way to go unless you like having your meat pies stolen! :)

And do you really think a bar fridge is worse than a full sized family fridge? Even if people were using this just for beer, at least you're not warming up a massive fridge every time you open it.

  • Damn I've been to 2 Kmart stores (Indoor & Mt. Ommaney) but none left. Bad luck for me as I've saved $79 hehehe!!!

  • I ended up buying 6 bar fridges for a grand total of $450.30… That included a 5% staff discount saving me another $23.70! Just way too good an opportunity to pass up!
