27817

****** EDIT: This app appears to have a few red flags. If you use it, don't link any services (Google Drive etc) or use their cloud services within the app. I've also emailed MobiSystems to verify if they have any connection with this app, will update here if/when they reply. ******

RRP $9.99

Seems to be decent, doesn't ask for any permissions except File Storage

Also their Smart PDF Scanner Pro also free (RRP $7.49)
Smart PDF Scanner Pro is a powerful cam scanner app that can easily scan documents, then converts the final output into pdf or JPG format. Special filters can be applied to each of your docs. It is also capable of extracting the text from the document.
If you need to scan more than one document then open your pdf cam scanner and scan docs free within one touch. Doc Scanner, CamScanner lets you quickly scan any kind of documents in your office, universities, college, and anything that needs to be there.

Some are not trusting this app, seems plausible.. see my post below which I'm adding here:

No reviews on AU store, but US store has plenty of reviews…
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.toolspadap…

When I tried to create an account within the app, it pointed me to: https://www.officesuite.com/, which is owned by MobiSystems
https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/mobisystems (101-250 staff, US based)

Once I signed in, I also tried logging into officesuite.com using the same details and it worked. It also gave me 5GB of online space.
The owner of these apps also created OfficeSuite which has 100M+ downloads / 1.35m reviews): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystem…
Officesuite cost $89.88/year. I'd imagine some of their tech/features made its way into these apps, and are priced lower/onetime (differentiate market segment).

      Someone must have.

      • +1

Yep my mate Joe… Or Bob, forgot his name I think

    • +3

There aren't even any reviews for it in the Google Play Store.

      • haha yeha lol

      • +9

        Gotta wonder:

        1. Distribute for free
        2. Accumulate reviews
        3. Charge $10
      • +3

Magically this app has many reviews now from today and in the past???

Most of the reviews are negative and the ones that are positive all appear to be fake if you ask me.

I would steer clear of this app.

        • Kinda proud of OzB for being able to sniff out the trashy ploy.

      • 4.4 star / 567 reviews/ 50k+ downloads?

No doubt better apps around and worth reading the comments.

Will give it a miss based on the comments here.

    • +8

Too many red flags. The word "sign" is misspelled as "sing" in all the images/screenshots of the app interface in Play Store.
Please report this app and I believe this listing should be deleted.
Many people are not tech savvy and this app or developer shouldn't be promoted.

Thanks for the ads, op. Unknown publisher so i will pass it.

  • +4

seems to be a whole lot of free apps by the developer https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Tools+Pad+Ap…

  • +37

I would never upload any document important enough to sign, to some dodgy unreviewed app with a false RRP that no one has ever paid.

    Buyer beware, especially when free.

    • +4

I would neg it if you feel this way

    • -2

Turn off internet when use the App?

      • Hard to turn internet off when you upload….

      • +2

Doesn't stop it from storing the document and uploading it later when you turn it back on

    • No permissions required for the app, in android turn off permissions is easy so no need to fear.

      • That doesn't mean the document you upload stays on your device. Permissions just stop the app seeing documents you haven't uploaded.

mobisystems is a legit company. they own aqua mail which is very well known. however, the developer of these apps is different (located in india) and i suspect not related to mobisystems

        • that's whats odd. when you signin, it goes to officesuite.com.
if you're in the app and click "Join PDF Editor Pro beta group", it goes to this page: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.mobisystems.mobisca…

"Hello, MobiSystems has invited you to a testing program for an unreleased version of the PDF Extra - Scan, Edit & Sign app. As a tester, you'll receive an update that includes a testing version of the PDF Extra - Scan, Edit & Sign app, which may also include unreleased versions of its instant app.
Note: testing versions may be unstable. Certain data on your use of the app will be collected and shared with the developer to help improve the app."

          • @noshopping: maybe the app is some sort of wrapper around the officesuite website

          • +4

@noshopping: This definitively confirms this Gmail account app dev is stealing Mobisystem's code for this app from PDF Extra.

As noted below, all their other apps look like stolen code too.

            Nothing genuine here.

          • @noshopping: This app's developer now has your credentials to the Mobisystems account. The app is just a passthrough. Change your password.

            • +1

              @notfrodo: Password to what?

              • @kimba88: Password to your Mobisystems account.

                • @notfrodo: Where would I have that from.. This app? I didn't sign up to anything within the app.
Sorry for my ignorance. I genuinely don't know.

                  • @kimba88: You are ok in that case. If you signed up for a Mobisystems account and you entered it via this app, then they probably have your password or access token.

            • +1

@notfrodo: Agreed. I've updated the post description!

      • +3

The developer account used for this is a Gmail account.

That alone indicates Mobisystems haven't anything to do with this.

The fact their login system is integrated, and the link within the app to the beta sign up to PDF Extra by Mobisystems would be definitive proof this is just poorly disguised stolen code from Mobisytems own 'PDF Extra' app, with whatever extra nasties baked in.

Based on their other apps, looks like all of them are stolen code.

I wouldn't put this onto my device, let alone use it for important documents.

    • the dev name Tools Pad Apps. Hard pass.

  • +10

I'll just put it this way…. After using the odd 'free' pdf utility or the like, I've found a few that have wound up for my email address on https://haveibeenpwned.com/

So. Yeah…. As some above mention. Wouldn't advise it.

  • When you're free, it's the product.

    • -3

I'm pretty sure you butcher your own meat too

  • +1

Where’s the Apple version that is free

    • +1

It’s APPLE won’t be free any time soon

    • +1

      Try Drawboard PDF instead.

  • +6

Samsung note 10+ came with a built-in app for signing PDFs

  • will this steal my identity and bank account details?

    • +1

Probably, but when Medibank, Optus, woolies/mydeal, TfNSW and a bunch of government agencies are giving your data away to hackers for free, is there really any point worrying?

      • +1

        Add PayPal to the list!

  • Had a quick look , it appears to be a reasonable App.

  • +2

I would strongly suggest against using this app. Just look at the permissions it requires to your phone.

Why does a PDF editor require all these?

    This app has access to:

    Identity
    - add or remove accounts

    Photos/Media/Files
    - read the contents of your USB storage
    - modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

    Storage
    - read the contents of your USB storage
    - modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

    Camera
    - take pictures and videos

    Wi-Fi connection information
    - view Wi-Fi connections

    Other
    - Access email provider data
    - view network connections
    - create accounts and set passwords
    - change network connectivity
    - full network access
    - run at startup
    - reorder running apps
    - use accounts on the device
    - control vibration
    - prevent device from sleeping
    - add words to user-defined dictionary

    • you sure, I only got asked 1 permission??

      • Please check on the following:

        Go to Google Store Link
Go to "About this app ->" and click the arrow.

Go Down to "Permissions - View details".

It clearly states - This app has access to above.

    • +1

turn off all permissions and it might still work

    • You haven't installed app, copy pasted from play store, they may be needed for other apps. its asking for no permissions, can optionally give permission to camera.

      • Agreed. I am not going to install the app if they are claiming that they are going to access the above. I can only suggest - Its a free country :)

  • Hey guys a dumb question - is it possible to buy/own a app on Google play without having a device to install it? I wish to buy for free just in case if I buy an android in future, ozbargain it while it is free

    • I think so. I uninstalled apps from an old mobile, when I prepared the new mobile, all the apps were there waiting for me. At some point, those apps were 'hanging' there in my Google account without a device.

      • You can buy from your computer and cancel the install, but to set up the account I think you need an Android phone.

    • +2

If you click on the link I think you can try installing it. But if not then you could use an Android emulator - like Bluestacks, and download it there to make sure it's on your account

    • click install on the phone, wait until it installs, don't open the app, immediately uninstall it. it will remain in your library.

      • He said without android device.

    • Google play in browser on windows

But read the comments about dodgy app red flags first

  • Any suggestions for free PDF editor on windows PC? Thanks in advance.

    • You can now open your pdf in word and edit it on Windows now, stuffs up the formatting for most things though

    • +1

If you use Microsoft Edge, you can edit PDF document, I'd just discover that last night myself.

    • Pdf tools is good.

  • +1

    Reading the app description

"Edit & Sing any Document easily, annotate & manage all your PDFs in one place!"

The whole thing reads like an item for sale on AliExpress. The apparent link to mobisystems pointed out by noshopping is a red flag too. Notice the mobisystems page refers to "PDF Extra" - not the name of this app. Some sort of ripoff clone I suspect

  • +6

Dodgy AF. They dont even have a proper website. Privacy policy is hosted here https://toolpadapps.blogspot.com/p/privacy-policy-of-pdf-edi… and developer contact is a gmail address!

    • +9

Also no PDF editor should need all these permissions

      This app has access to:
      Identity
      add or remove accounts
      Photos/Media/Files
read the contents of your USB storage
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
      Storage

I have just uninstalled. No review indicate a possible red flag.

    • +1

      Garbage.

  • +2

I downloaded this app.. Then saw there were more and more negative comments regarding the credtials of the app.. So I uninstalled. Would love to have an app like this for free without ads.. But the comments to me are worrying.

    • Did the same

  • Yep, same, going to uninstall right now

  • +3

Adobe Fill and Sign is free. Works well for occasional pdf fill and sign emergencies.

  • +1

Yes. I will pass on this one.
Read some of the comments on the dodgy credentials and permissions….before you install the app.

  • +1

Has a bunch of 5+ dollar apps all at 1-10k downloads each, all on sale for 0 Bux. I don't see anything dodgy here 🤡

  • I tried linking my Google drive :/ Didn't work, what should I do to protect myself now

    • +1

if you never re-entered the Google drive pass within their app, should be fine. If it was direct Google linking/login, check in your Google Security Settings to see if the app has access, if so revoke/remove it.

      • +4

You gotta delete the deal bro. This is just advertising for a scammy app now.

        • +2

How to delete deal? Can a mod remove the link for me? I don't want to get penalized for posting a deal that people can't get access to. Right now there are red flags with this app but it still works, however I would be happier knowing that the deal gets pulled if the mods approve it/do it. I actually found this app on AppSales app (pretty popular Android discount app).

          • @noshopping: From the ozbargain FAQ

How do I remove my deal or can I have my deal deleted?
You can not remove the deal yourself. Please click the report button underneath your deal with an explanation and a moderator will assess your request. Please note that if the deal is popular or if the deal has important value regarding discussions, it may not be removed.

For further issues, please open a new thread on the Talk with a Moderator forum and discuss why you would want to have your deal removed, even after reading the above FAQ item. Moderators will access on case by case basis to determine whether the posted deal should be removed.

    Fake reviews galore, sus af

  • +3

I've reported to Google play as copycat

I can't believe there are so many people on ozbargain (259 so far) who fell for this

    • +4

Honestly the deal needs to be pulled to avoid more people potentially having passwords compromised.

  • -3

    Thank you so much

  • if you are not sure..just click install and then cancel..now the app should be in your library ..then decide later

  • +3

Scotty and co should have a process to unpublish/temp remove a deal for situatioms like this..massive red flag that could currently shows 6000+ clicks.

Something like power users who have the capacity to unpublish deals until further review

  • So many red flags! Please delete this scam app ASAP!
    As others have previously mentioned:

    @tight-ass
Magically this app has many reviews now from today and in the past???

Most of the reviews are negative and the ones that are positive all appear to be fake if you ask me.

Reading through the app reviews on the app store. They are all too good to be true. And most 5 stars reviews are like scripted description.

Please, please, please, do not install stuff like this. Good grief
