I've been using Kaspersky Total Security now for about 10 years and am very happy with it. It's very light on, meaning it does what its meant to do but it's not popping up all the time with false warnings or suggestions etc. I usually buy it from eBay but just recently I bought 2x 2years directly from SaveonIT. It's very simple, they send you a code with a link to where you download the software and then you're up and running, the code arrives via email within 24 hours. I also bought "Kaspersky secure VPN" which is far better than CyberGhost or PureVPN, the speeds are excellent and connects first time, every time, well that's my 2c worth!
Oh BTW you can share the extra device connections with a family member as I don't need 5 connections for myself.

this reads like an advertisement 💀

      • -2

        It is. lol

      • +2

An advertisement for Kaspersky or Saveonit, or both? I can give you some negatives if that helps.
Here's an old comment of mine stating something similar and I now discovered that it was infact devicedeal not saveonIT that I purchased Kaspersky Total Security from. As stated above I did once buy Kaspersky Security from eBay and that was from savonIT eBay site, hence my error.
Sorry but I can't say too much negative about Kaspersky Security as I've found it to be excellent.
Oh here's something that a Kaspersky shill would never say, do not buy directly from the Kaspersky website as the prices
are about twice as much as buying from a reseller such as devicedeal, saveonIT or many eBay resellers.

Just windows defender. Plus if you really are that concerned why would you use a Russian AV right?

    • +6

Check out pc security channel on YouTube where he compares kaspersky and defender side by side. Some ransonware go past défender and the résults are not pretty.

I use kaspersky and can vouch for its effectiveness at keeping off nasties on my pc.

      • Not suggesting it’s a bad AV but that you shouldn’t be relying on solely 3rd party AV to protect you. Backups and user behaviour are first, Windows Defender is next. If you want to go to such lengths then install and pay for something that isn’t from Russia.

        • Agree. I tried this and it seemed to completely highjack my system and was very intrusive. When I decided to no longer use it, the un-install was more involved then it should have been.

          • @Ruprect: There’s a reason it’s banned on US Gov systems lol. They are involved with FSB

              @ShrewdBargin: https://au.pcmag.com/security/92960/should-you-buy-kaspersky…

The main reason not to use Kaspersky is Putin's war.

              • @Igaf: I already know this, why are you telling me, especially with that tone 😆 Preaching to the choir

                • @ShrewdBargin: The link - and plenty of other commentaries - gives the lie to, or at least puts doubts on the "unsecure" fears for most users.

                  • +1

@Igaf: Oh. I didn’t even bother opening it. An article in pcmag != a comprehensive cybersecurity audit that is peer reviewed and the entire article is pretty much fluff, no proper evidence shown.

                    • @ShrewdBargin: "peer reviewed"? Hilarious. There are plenty of discussions on the topic. The ones I've read in general say similar things. I'd quote you some of the pcmag link but to use a famous line - "frankly my dear I'd don't give a damn" in your case.

          • @Ruprect: then it should have been what? I think you just cut your sentence off there.

        • I agree with you about backups and user behaviour. On some computers Microsoft Defender causes noticeable slowdowns. In which case, it makes sense to replace it with something lighter. Regarding it being Russian, I can only presume that actions of the government have nothing to do with Kaspersky. Aside from that, Kaspersky arguably provides the best protection of any antivirus which is a good thing. Of course, if you are always careful about what files you open, you should be very well protected no matter what antivirus you use.

    • I guess it would be good against the Russian hackers hahaha

Be careful with this company. Recently bought Kaspersky Anti-virus product for 3 Devices 2 Years subscription from this company and they provided me a licence key which was activated almost one year ago by someone else. So, I lost one year of subscription out of two years. This implies that they sale the same or used product key to multiple customers. I sent them multiple emails to provide me a new licence key but no assistance and response to my Emails.

    • That’s not good. Maybe try messaging the rep via OzBargain?

    • +2

@umandal I'm more than a little skeptical. How did you manage to activate the licence the second year? Once a licence has been activated it can't be used elsewhere. If what you infer was correct there would be numerous credible complaints about SaveOnIT. I bought the wrong product licence from them a while back. Didn't activate but couldn't exchange because as SaveOnIT explained once the key has been sent it's public and they can't control its use. Completely understandable.

After reading your comments here I'm even more skeptical: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/2360440/redir

      • I agree that once the key is sent to public then it can't be control its use. BUT there is nothing stopping you to sell the same key to another customer.
Regarding activation - 'Once a licence has been activated it can't be used elsewhere' -> This statement is not true. You can uninstall from one PC and reinstall onto another PC using the same key. Also, when the key is for 3 devices then at time you can use the same key in 3 devices. If you want I can provide the invoice detail, from SaveOnIT which includes the date of purchase and product details. I also have the emails from Kaspersky which says when the key was first activated and the reason why my key is only valid for another one year instead of 2 years after my purchase.

        • Yes the licence owner can use the key however he/she wants but if someone has already activated it no-one else can so the question is how were you able to do so? Care to share those emails, including you original purchase order? If what you say is true then SaveOnIT has to refund you or make good. It's possible that someone has previously hacked your key randomly and is only using it on one device. If the key is active Kaspersky should be able to advise where and when any previous activation occurred. They shouldn't be re-using keys.

          • @Igaf: I think activation is not the right word. What I meant is after installing the software put the key to make the software valid. I have uploaded multiple files to make my claim is valid. I hope you can see them.

    Any deals on ESET?

  • They also have the total security for 1 device for 1 year at $10 on ebay. Easier for me as i don't need it for any other devices. Works out $20 for 2 years which is pretty good.

  • +1

I've used Kaspersky and it has a very small footprint with system resources and does a very good job.

Yes, Kaspersky is a Russian company but they do a damn good job. Here is an article from a cyber security news site

  • Being using kapersky too for a few years also, seems pretty good!

  • The thing is US firms are known for creating back doors in their software for security agencies and US security agencies are notorious for their surveillance activities. Kaspersky on the other hand has a clean record of 0 proven instance of helping Russia or anyone. Even if it would provide data to Russia, there isn’t much they could do with your data. Also, they don’t have crazy funds like US to expand their surveillance capabilities.

Happy user of Kaspersky, usually get it from overseas as its cheaper.

    • Maybe not intentionally, but ….

      The Verge Article Link

USA is our ally and won't use the data to attack us or the west. So what if Russia might use this as backdoor to attack Australian infrastructure/companies/government/citizens, USA is bad too right? lol

      • -2

Missed the Trump years did you? He and his cronies showed they have no morals when it comes to "partnerships" as long as power and money are forthcoming. Anything is possible with rogue states under sociopathic leadership, the question is how likely is that and where are the threats most likely to come from - ie state sponsored hacking of important systems and infrastructure or via a commercial antivirus program.

  • Do you trust a Russian owned company at this point? I don't.

    • +1

Most definitely. Why wouldn't I? It's the Russian government that started the war, not Kaspersky. As well as that, they moved all their datacentres to Switzerland.
