People Who Make Their Cars Louder, Are They Inconsiderate [Profanity] ?

Since we pretty much all agreed that smokers are inconsiderate, I have another question:
What about people who intentionally make their cars/motorcycles louder? Are they inconsiderate a**holes too?

I recently was a witness to an episode where everyone in the cafe had to stop their conversations and wait until one such unit finished parking his thundering bike. Then he just strolled in with a smile and sat for a meal. You reckon he just doesn't give a damn about other people, or is he that oblivious how it affects everyone around him?

I know that there are legal limits to vehicle's noise, but police is clearly too busy to bother with it (at least here in Gold Coast), cause I see and hear them to often to be an exception. IIRC motorbike's allowed levels are even higher since "loud pipes save lives" or something, but then we all also heard the opposite: that there is no evidence to such claims and hi vis clothing would work better anyway.

So what do you think about such people?

    Obligatory South Park reference*

I honestly thought you were explaining the episode at first.

    • +9

I've been calling them fags ever since. Great episode.

I don’t scare easy but some prick’s bike started like a gunshot when I was about to order some food. Was not impressed.

    • +47

You mean every cafe that has an outside area somewhat close to the road?

    • +1

why do you insist on parking where people are dining?

  • +5

    Harleys are stock standard loud.

A Harley out of the factory is 80 decibels.

    • +7

I guess they technically have to comply with noise laws? But then none of their client will leave it stock, will they?

    • +19

If I can hear it across town, it's not 80 decibels.

    • 80db is not obnoxiously loud, especially if it's measured close to the motorcycle. I wonder what the distance is for those official figures.

      • +1

Lawn mowers are about 85 Db in comparison. Harleys sound louder than lawn mowers to me. Prolonged exposure to sound at that volume damages your inner ear. But the people who ride them are too moronic to care, and are sociopaths as well.

        • -3

The loudest Harley owners are definitely not moronic. They are wearing ear plugs to be able to make their exhaust even louder. Not sure if that makes them sociopathic.

      • +1

they measure 1 meter from the exhaust

    • +1

If they all owned a house then you wouldn’t be able to afford one

    • +1

      wtf?

  • +53

The best part is, they make it louder and then not re-tune it, so in most cases they just lose power and gain noise.

Lost count of the cars I have dyno’d in my life with a new $3,000+ exhaust system and a K&N pod filter that actually lost power due to stupid mods…

InB4: “Yeah, but mine makes heaps more power. A free flowing exhaust system is good for 15 to 30% hp gains…” Hahaha, no it isn’t.

Also InB4: “BuT LoUd PiPeZ dO sAvE LiVeZ!!1!1!” Hahaha, wrong again.

Like what we say about Harley Davidsons with obscenely loud exhausts… “Turns fuel directly into noise without the byproduct of power…”

    • +7

Turns fuel directly into noise without the byproduct of power…

      Vtech just kicked in yo

      • +2

And now it's only 3 secs slower than a type s.
        They're so cool, yo.

    • +12

I have a chuckle every time I see a K&N hot air intake pulling straight from the engine bay

    • +4

It certainly can make 20% hp gains. Particularly if the exhaust has become the restricting factor on your modded turbo charged cars. There are literally dyno graphs to show the improvement. There is a reason why motorsports cars have large exhausts. Obviously you still need some back pressure though. The guys with cat-back exhausts are doing it for wank factor and there is nothing worse than the bangs and pops crew.

    • +9

Also InB4: “BuT LoUd PiPeZ dO sAvE LiVeZ!!1!1!” Hahaha, wrong again.

You think you look smart every time you write like this, but you just look silly.

    • +9

agreed - from about 17-29yo I had a straight-through sausage exhaust on my car - as a musician I liked the rounded sound - for some years I was living in a farmhouse about a km off the main road - and a housemate told me he could hear when I turned the corner - I would probably blip the engine to change down - so yeah a km away - I liked it but did realize it was using more fuel that it was supposed to so yeah.

I'm sensitive to noise - I cannot think in a noisy environment - as an acoustic musician who grew up in a very quiet place I have dB meters to measure noise (e.g. I hate some Sydney bus engines that sound like gravel crushers - so offensively noisy I can't believe they are even allowed)

I also rode motorbikes for 10 years and experienced the sound of different pipes both 2 & 4-stroke from vintage to modern

as for Hardley Drivables, NSW Police had started to crack down on noisy motorbikes and were writing noise tickets for them, when Hardelys became popular ('potato potato') and since then I haven't seen anything about bikes getting tickets for noise

I remember in the US seeing some old guy standing straddling his Hardley - I think it had been bored out to like 1600cc - and had straight pipes (no muffler) as they do in the US - he glared at me fiercely while revving his engine - it was so loud I'd guess 100dB (like standing next to a jet engine)

now I think about it he may have been seeking to compensate for his concern about a small middle leg

now old and retired my dream car is a Lexus - I drove one that was so quiet I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

So - in summary - young people may like to make noise to get attention (e.g. skateboards with hard wheels); old people may prefer peace and quiet.

I also have a theory when I hear a female laughing irritatingly loudly in public - loudness of laughter inversely correlated with beauty

if that relates, the most attractive guy I knew in my youth who was continually surrounded by women seeking his attention - drove a boring Holden station wagon - so make of that what you will.

      • +2

People don't put hard wheels on their skateboards to get attention or make noise

      • Thanks for putting the effort into writing this comment, it's was a great read! 😃

    • -1

And to think I could just spend $3k for a software update, avoid all the hassle and increase my Tesla's acceleration from 4.4 secs to 3.9 secs 0 to 100….LoL

      • +1

But what about when all your 3.9/4.4s runs are collected and analysed to see where they occurred in a sub-100km/h speed zone, and you get issued a fine for each one?

Will Elon really stop this happening to his customers, when law enforcement comes knocking?

      • +3

Fancy bragging about being locked out of features of your own car until you paying ongoing software unlock fees.

        • -5

LOL…ah the jealous types who can't afford like to chirp up in this forum…enjoy your backwards mindset and your backwards car along with it :D

  • +13

    I hate those people!

  • -1

If I can talk to them, I wave them down and give them a lot of support but ask them if they can increase it as it's amazing!

Later, I give thumbs up for how loud it is.

For some reason, eventually, they never seem to drive by any more. Hmmm, I guess they might have driven by some boys in blue who can't ignore it?

I am not a fan of motorbikes. I see a lot of the Harley groups in my area on the weekend.
Sometimes I hear them coming up the street and when they pass me they speed up to make it louder like they’re trying to impress me. I don’t even look at them. Just roll my eyes and keep walking. They seem oblivious to the fact they’re impressing nobody and completely miss the fact that many people are irritated by their stupidly loud bikes

Also my neighbour bought their grandkids?? a motorbike for Christmas.
I’m lucky I’m usually at work when they ride it. Not even sure the kids live there.
It’s not very loud, but it was a little annoying that they rode it every day of the holidays from 5-7pm when I just wanted to sit in the quiet. Don’t buy your kid a motorbike unless you live on acreage.
    .

      • +4

I don't give a crap what they do as long as they're not being a nuisance. Motorbikes are loud and annoying. As I said, if you're on acreage, go ahead. But in the more built up areas, find some other way to have fun.

      • +3

Or they could ride a push bike or BMX, go to a skate park or basketball court. Even kids playing Marco Polo in the pool is less annoying than them riding back and forth with motorcycles for hours. The thing about motorbikes is they don’t use as much energy so kids don’t self limit as much as they would if they were doing other outdoor noisy kid activities.

      • -3

Lol. The personal responsibility crowd are the worst.

        What do you expect?

        • Air filtration for smokers, cooking, other pollutants
        • Sound proofing for loud vehicles
        • Screening for nudity
        • Accepting a sun free life
    • 'Harley groups'

reminds me of driving west in Sydney and seeing a wedding parade full Leb - white stretch limo or three - preceded by a bunch of white sparkly custom chopper Harleys - the one in front had something like gold-plated mag wheels so was full Princess - as an ex-motorcyclist, I gave him the thumbs up which he loved - but hey man yo look like you should be wearing the frilly dress too man …

another point - Harleys are popular with short people, as the frame allows the seat to sit lower - in fact I think they even have models to suit shorter women which may be lower again - so when you see scary-looking biker dude straddling their scary-looking Harley you might also think - 'I see - you bought that because you're short in all three legs … ?'

    • Yeah, harley riders are cosplaying as badasses but are basically morons.

    • +50

So, if my hobby was screaming at you through a megaphone would that be ok?

        • +12

          Ok where do you live…

    • +66

      Nah screw this.

We need to stop saying people are Karen's for complaining.

Loud cars and motorbikes a really annoying and actually disturb people's ability to enjoy peace and quiet.

        • +9

          I'm a man so I'd be…ken?

But anyway, nice contribution to the conversation dumb dumb. Responses like that are the last bastion of someone who has nothing else to say, you do you.

      • +1

Humans evolved in an environment where loud sounds were very rare and generally signified immediate danger. In modern cities are are exposed to so many more noise sources than cro-magnon man: cars, planes, helicopters, wood chippers, vacuum blowers, toilets, desktop computers under load, mechanical keyboards, neighbours playing rock music, construction noise, etc.

There is nothing wrong with you if you find loud environments distressing.

      • -1

        Ok Karen cozzo.

    • I love doing burnouts. Tell me where you live so I can come over with my mates so we can enjoy ourselves knowing you wont call the police.

      • +1

Why can't we come to yours?

    • How about serial killers? Should they be free to enjoy their hobby too?

      • -4

        Hi karen.

      • Sadly Karens are free to enjoy their hobby.

        • My hobby is saying karen

I have a neighbour with a loud car. Every night at 10-10:15 pm he will turn on his car for 5-10mins before going. Once someone from the street approached him, to tell him that it was annoying as they have a baby waking up due to the noise. He told him to FO and called his friends and family (with loud cars), they made 10 times more noise for half-hour before leaving. What a hobby …!

    • +1

Don't stress Axel, most people on this post drives Camry or Corolla and their only hobby is complaining .

      • No stress here, lots of laughs though at how insane some of these people are that's commented.

Reading all these stupid comments makes me firmly believe there's going to be a lot of those insane forum posts online whenever they are older complaining about noisy kids outside or lawn mowers stuff like that.

  • +24

    Are they inconsiderate a**holes too?

Well, isn't that the whole point of having a loud engine? To show everyone you just don't GAF about them?
It is a display of dominance, by somebody who really does not have much to show.

    • +2

Tbh it's no more a display of dominance than a 3 year old flexing their arms

      • when someone shouts it shows they have already lost control

if you really DGAF you wouldn't bother to comment

to me loud exhausts is someone trying to be noticed - 'please please looka me - I'm over here … !'

my favourite was seeing a light-green Lambo stopped in traffic by an unmarked police car

while the policeman was standing on the road writing a ticket, the driver had got out and was standing on the road beside his car, obviously miffed about not being admired, and instead being publically called to account as a loser - he was looking frustrated like 'this is not what I wanted !!!'

        • Hahaha, would have loved to see that. But at least lambos have a right to be loud because they're actually fast and powerful, as opposed to the dumb dumbs in their 98 civic with a large hole for an exhaust.

        • +1

          Lol. projection here.

  • -4

one of these tossers next door….40-something suburban dad trying to act like hes still in his 20s.
one of their cars is a brand spanking new EV….while the other is a turbo twin exhaust gas guzzler….caring for the environment! lol

    • +11

Most turbos actually improve fuel economy

      • +1

I mean, most people dont get turbos for fuel economy, they get it so they can floor it every corner.

      • True. My Golf R does 6.1L/100km down the highway, insane fuel economy.

      • you dont get twin turbos for fuel economy..they are performance cars

    • +4

One offsets the other, you could say. Like people not eating meat but jetting off for holidays.

      • -2

        or just call it hypocrisy
        lol….

        • If they do it for the virtue signalling then yeah.

        • +2

My main motivation, like many others, is to buy an EV for the money saving and I also like the drive and their tech.

        • Or they could be running two cars WiTh tWiN eXhAuSts!

      • +1

Yah vegetarianz shouldn't catch planes derp derp

    • Downvoting cause it's frank cozzo.

It's out of control in London. You watch those walking London videos are Lambos etc, crackling and farting.

    • Lambos sound great, but Hyundai hot hatches?? lol C'mon

      • -1

Lambos crackling and popping sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen in the wank stratosphere

once in Japan we saw about 10 Lambos on the highway on a group outing - meh - not my cup of tea

we went to a park and later heard them returning on the highway probably 500m away - bang pop crackle

I'm sure they totally impressed themselves …

  • -7

Old man or President Karen thread….

    • +4

A little from column A, a little from column B.

    • +5

Are the old men the ones who love their loud cars? Because it always seems to be someone living through a mid/late life crisis who need loud car noises to get noticed instead of having actually achieved something in life.

They should do it the top gear way, go find a tunnel to make lots of loud noises via echoing rather than just annoying the shit out of everyone everywhere.

      • LOL… yea no p-platers have loud cars… or 20somethings or 30somethings…. or those drivin 'hot hatches' that fart each gear change… yep… only the oldies…

        • +1

Where did I say young people don’t drive them too? Just trying to clarify what you meant by old men.

        • +2

BMW fake farts are the worst. God they are horrible. Hyundai i30n etc not far behind. BTW I love a nice exhaust note so far from against an awesome exhaust and induction sounds.

        • +1

Man all these comments sound like they're from people stuck in the 1990s…
