  • Can anyone confirm if these are any good?

    • I have the Monro from last year, got it for $99. Outstanding machine, just as good as Ooni.

      • -1

I'm a bit gun shy on these cheap pizza ovens. I got a $120 gas fired from Big W and its garbage. It doesn't look like an Ooni as all these Coles ones do, but honestly, its total sh*te. It barely gets to 300deg C, and as soon as you open the door to put the pizza in, you can never get the temperature back up again, which I legit do not understand. I found the regular oven was better, and now it just sits around getting rusty

        I am still tempted tho…

        • -1

My Ooni ripoff Monro(same thing as this) gets to 500c easily

        • +1

There’s a world of difference, I have the contempo BIGW one and it’s a glorified bbq with a lid.
The ones that are an Ooni clone are entirely better.
This one looks almost the same as the BBQ galore Arrosto I have

          • @[Deactivated]: Not sure why I'm being negged here. I don't see how there's a "world of difference". Visually yes it looks like an Ooni, but that doesn't mean it functions like one. That's what i'm saying. An MG looks like a car, doesn't mean it's as good as a Mercedes.

Hey, i want to be wrong here, i am still considering buying one!

            • @jellykingdom: It’s more about the design.

An MG clone will still drive better than a lorry truck, right?

The truth is the ultra cheap ones below $200 aren’t really pizza ovens, they don’t get hot enough. They’re just BBQ with a lid and a plate

If it looks a lot like an Ooni, it should function reasonably close to one

            • +3

@jellykingdom: The Ooni is a VERY simple design and easy to clone. I don't think these things would cost that much to make, likely a very healthy profit in them. I am very happy with my Monro, it cooks Neapolitan pizzas to a restaurant standard.

            • @jellykingdom: just got one from Coles ……
scans as $229 though said $299 on the tag in Victoria …… so I'd say nationwide price drop.

it has a top and bottom burner at the back and downward deflector on the middle …. I think some of the oonies have L shaped burner so heats the back and side of the pizza, thee coles on would be back only, so need to turn a couple of more times.

Not sure if Ooni has a door to keep heat in …. the coles one doesn't, but then it's gas not pellets so easy to generate heat …….

Carry case is a nice extra …….

Not sure what the pizzas will be like but for $229, and it's gas, seems like a low risk into to these pizza makers and I can upgrade if it gets used a lot.

I currently have an electric one I have made 100's on pizzas in, but it does lack a bit in temperature dept, though great indoors on a rainy day.

        • LoL, exactly the same for me and the Big W garbage 😅

        • Get this one mate, you won't be disappointed. I too was hesitant last year with thoughts along the same line as you. I bought this (Monro as Coles branded it last year) and was not disappointed. You might be able to get it cheaper if you wait just a little longer too.

    • We got the BQQ Galore Version when it was 320ish on special. Always looked at the Ooni but never could justify spending that money for pizza oven.
I must say I couldn't be happier with the decision.
Works a perfectly and we now have pizza night every Saturday.
Similar as the Ooni and any other brand it takes some practice to get good results and I would think that even now after a couple of month our pizza get a little better every time.
It also depends A LOT on your dough how goods your pizza comes out and how good it tastes.

Be.very careful of Thompson from Coles, it's doggy!
Bought a air fryer which lasted 10mins and dead.
Contact them for warranty, they wanted videos but Gmail only allows 15mb per mail. Sent them 3 video and they asked more which were in other two emails.
After back and forth, they said I have to send it back at my own cost. Or they can pay me half to call it quit!
I returned to Coles, never bother with these bunch again!

  • Fyi at my local coles 4215 last night the still had qty 8 at $299 so only at some stores id say .

    • was same for me in Melbourne, was $299 yesterday … $229 today.

  • Also interested to know if it's similar to the generic/Ooni ripoffs that are around the $3-350 mark.

    • The leg design looks like the arrosto

    • +2

that are around the $3-350 mark.

Where can I get one for $3 ?

  • was this in last week's catalog or when?

    edited found https://www.catalogueau.com/coles/coles-catalogue-best-buys-…

also how to find which stores have stock as I missed this

    • my local coles looked up which stores had stock and how many ….

If you buy a good pizza stone and peel and cook in oven @210c fan forced/top grill, great results and easier.

    • +1

I confirm that's true for frozen chippies and pies.

Proper pizzas made from scratch require way more than 210 degrees.

    • +2

      No. Not at all.

You have obviously never tried good neapolitan pizza

      • +1

it's possible just watch Vito Iacopelli youtube channel but no doubt a decent pizza oven at a high temp is better & easier for best pizza

  • I got the Monroe last year for $50 this looks exactly the same. It struggles a bit getting all the way up to temperature, a little flap door would fix this. I'm pretty sure the same sized ooni would struggle getting a 60 second pizza but this still cooks fast enough.

    • yes lack of doors on these type of pizza makers seems an oversight in design

  • -1

Bunnings has the 12" for $189

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/salter-wood-pellet-12-portable-s…

    Don't know if it's similar.

    • Apples and oranges - this requires wood pellets, can’t use gas with it.

    • +2

I bought this last year and it's a struggle trying to crank out pizzas as fast as I can with a hooded gas bbq and a pizza stone.

the first pizza usually comes out nice as the stone is at temp, but as it only comes with a thin stone it loses temp quickly and needs to heat up again which usually takes a 5+ minutes.

also, as it's a small pellet hopper, it does require some babying to keep on top of the temp

i've had some good success with cooking naan in them though.

    • I saw that oven in person. Looks like it was made out of leftover tinnies. Looks like a kids toy to be honest. If it was $20 I'd try it.

  • $70 off $300 is not reduced/priced to clear!
    Sharpen your pencils Coles!

    • +1

      I'll do $50, best I can offer!

    • +1

Wait for it to get to $99 like last time IMO. Although some store managers are super stingy and don't like to mark things down too much.. so you might have to visit a few stores.

    • depends how many are left …. Elsternwick had 1, I bought that now there is none ….. had been waiting for price drop for the past 2 weeks.

  • +4
  • having called coles to find stock any places they gave me with stock were down to their last 1 or 2 (so I had to call stores direct to check they still had them - which can be a pain) so you will be lucky to see them priced at $99. I picked one up to replace my larger pizza oven so I'm looking forward to see how it goes. First impressions is it's quite long compared to an ooni but looks quite well built for the money, comes with the new LPG fitting

  • This is reduced to clear for $$114.50 at Coles Springvale. Two left in stock.

    • send a picture, would try if I see stock for get one as a present at $114 ….mine scanned at $229,

      • -1

I can't upload an image. Not sure how.

  • Got it for $114 at Coles Burnisde, South Australia

  • Couldn't find any at Waterloo NSW

  • My locals are clearing them out at $169

  • +1

Just got it for $169 in WA..

  • +1

For those keen, spotted this for $169 at two Coles yesterday- Waverley gardens and Springvale

  • Also $169 in Chermside

    • many left?

    • do you know if they still have any

  • +1

Got it cranking on Sunday. Amazing for the price. Didn't take much mucking around hit the temp quickly and turned pizzas out in 1.34 to be exact. Very happy for $169

    • Sounds great. Did you do the dough from scratch? I've been told that the frozen dough balls from Costco work really well in this pizza oven too. I picked up the last one from Coles Oakleigh and someone walked up to me and said they have achieved amazing results with the Costco dough balls. I'll fire mine up this weekend.

  • +1

For anyone looking in Adelaide, there's two left @169 at St Clair store.
none at Churchill, Northpark, Prospect, Welland. Got an employee to do a stock check for me too, said there was 2 at Churchill (there wasn't) and none anywhere else (there was). So don't bother going by that!

  • Anyone knows which coles store in victoria that have it?

    • +1

There is one left at Coles Ivanhoe, Vic. Reduced to $169.

  • One left at Maroochydore Plaza $169.

  • Hi did anyone have trouble with the gas connection? The supplied gas connection doesn’t fit my gas bottle and is different to what is in the instruction manual. I got mine from Ryde for $169 yesterday.

    • It's the new lc227 (or something like that) connection. New law says everything has to be sold with it now. You should be able to swap out your bottle for the new style at bunnings etc

      • Just make sure to grab the black screw tap gas bottle and not the green one. Green's are slowly being phased out.

        • or you can swap over the connector hose to the old style

        • How does this work for existing gear - do we need to buy an adaptor to use new gas bottles on our old equipment ?

EDIT : Turns out the new connectors on the gas bottles, are still compatible with the old fitting on your barbecue 👍
          https://freezetec.com.au/recreational/new-lpg-gas-fittings-a…
But you'll need a bottle with a new connector to use with a device that also has the new connector.

  • These were $299 on Thurs 5th, $229 on Thurs 12th. If the trend continues, these are due for a price drop tomorrow, Thurs 19th.

Wishful thinking, but you never know. Fingers crossed.

  • Can these be connected to mains gas or only a bottle ?

    • LPG bottle only

  • Anyone have trouble with the burner backlighting and making loud jet noises? Still works fine but not how it's meant to operate

    • mine did it the first time I lit it been fine since, check all the connections

  • Is this any good and can reach 500c easily?
Any ideas which victoria stores have the unit?

    • you are late to the party I doubt anywhere will still have stock as they were on clearance

    • +1

Coles Mernda Junction had one left for 169 when I went past this afternoon, if that’s close to you.

  • Not sure how you are going with yours. Mine started to backfire and make loud noises during first cook. Now it won't turn on, gas is not flowing. The gas bottle and regulator is working okay on the BBQ.

Will get a new bottle and see if it makes a difference. If someone has any tips on troubleshooting, will be much appreciated.

    • Mine started doing this too. Got to the point where it would self ignite when turning the dial on from being off.

Popped the back open noticed the flexible(ish) gas hose was looped towards the burner side, so disconnected and re looped it back towards the back side so in theory less warm and straighter path. Also made sure everything was done up tight back there. Couple hour long cooks later, issue gone.

If I paid top dollar I'd have taken it back but happy enough all things considered.

      • I had the thing opened to work out if something similar was at play. Return would have been last resort as there won't be a replacement. I too noticed the extra windy metal flex hose which is wired wastage of material and can also twist it self if not careful to block gas

Turns out the not relighting part was an user error. You have to keep the knob pushed in until it lights. Sort of a safety feature which isn't present on my BBQ.

The back burning part I have chalked down to low pressure in the bottle perhaps. Will see how next cook goes. Too windy tonight to give it a go

        • +1

Yeah see how you go. When it backfires it will be burning right back at a mesh part of the pipe, you'll be able to see it inside the burner unit vents. This is no good!
You'll want to turn it the unit asap if this happens as it'll warm up too much before the actual burner, likely causing the auto ignition I mentioned. Hopefully you'll be fine

          • @heineken016: Thanks for the tip(o-00) :D

Will get some dough going in next couple days for the weekend cook and see how we go with it. I am exceptionally poor at using the paddle too so do need the practice

            • +1

              @Swanson approved: zing!

my tips after not going so well the first time:

              • do initial dough ball stretch in a mound of semolina, works heaps better than flour. then main stretch on chopping board with flour.
              • keep the paddle clean. put a very light sprinkle of semolina on it too
              • jiggle the floured board, and then the paddle, when the pizza is on. if it's not moving freely, don't bother trying to transfer or launch.
              • try to keep excess flour or semolina out of oven by brushing what you can off the paddle. it burns easy
              • turn down the flame to minimum after launching, my tops burnt much quicker than the bottom. back up in between pizzas.

              Good luck!

              • @heineken016: My biggest tip is that it really does cook in less than 90 seconds and you really do need to turn it after 20 to 30 seconds - if you leave it alone for 45 seconds then your pizza becomes a fire.

                It's bonkers hot in there.

      • Hey mate how did you get access to the back? Looks like it's riveted on?

        • +2

There's a side or bottom panel that's just screwed on, pop that off.

      • Pulled the metal hose out, reshaped it and no back firing tonight! Thanks heaps!

      • Hi!, could you please send a picture of what you did?
I got one Thomson oven but the flame keeps stopping (first use). Plus now it turns off as soon as I release the knob…

        • Sorry, it's all back together now, and sounds like a different problem for you. If you take the cover off and snap a pic I could take a look though

  • +1

I’m very late to the party but picked one up for $129 at coles today , couldn’t walk past and not buy it . Just turned it on and gets very hot , cooked toast in 30 seconds

    • My toaster cost $10, takes 2 minutes
You are living the high life

  • My local just had one of these for $84.50

    • damn. that's an absolute steal
