  • Does this come in Ryzen?

      • This one has only 8Gb Ram

    • Yes it does available on Computer alliance ebay store https://www.ebay.com.au/p/27056634424 $1399 and you can save $69.95 with coupon OFFTOP5

      • wow ryzen model is up to 22hrs battery but missing TB4

        • The one on ebay store has TB4

        • +1

My apologies only the intel model had TB4, but apparently the same model is listed at $1699 on computer alliance ebay store https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175432793928 and you can save another $84.95 with coupon code OFFTOP5

@Davesharma: Thunderbolt is an Intel-owned technology, so no computer with AMD processor will have it (and any listing which has both is incorrect).

            • @Xonk: Well, AMD could always licence it, but has chosen not to I think.
Apple with its own Mx SOCs is heavily into Thunderbolt, in fact it has TB instead of USB-C.

              • @entropysbane: Intel isn't competing with Apple, though. The only products that will have Apple chips are Apple ones, and no Apple products are going to contain Intel chips, so about the only way for Intel to profit from them would be to license something like Thunderbolt (that way they can at least make a few bucks from each Macbook sold). Meanwhile, Intel would bargain hard if AMD tried to license TB, and AMD would be reluctant to put themselves in a situation where a) they're bearing a cost their competition isn't, and b) every sale they make gives risk-free profit to their competitor.

                • @Xonk: Yes that is all true. I was saying that it isn’t that AMD can’t use TB, but that it is a licensing barrier only.

You could buy 32gb ram for $140 and upgrade it yourself.

        • +1

          Probably soldered ram

      • Might be getting picky, but is there a model with a "Zen 3+" CPU available? (Ie: 6600u or better?).

      • +1

        not oled and touchscreen

  • i5 version $1449.99 on Amazon UK.

  • upgradeable RAM and Storage ?

    • You can upgrade storage and not the ram.

  • Good price but that RRP is outrageous.

    What? AutoCAD/BIM/3Dmodel ?
You'll need more Ram > GPU > CPU

This zenbook has very good displays in a sleek built , that's about it nothing more.

    • Depends on what branch of engineering they're doing. Most engineering disciplines don't use much 3D modelling and this laptop can easily cope with the workload required, especially considering the smaller scale of projects that would be completed in a uni degree. These specs are ideal for anything up to basic 3D CAD. Also, many universities now offer remote access to their own computers so the software isn't run from your own computer, meaning you can even use a chromebook if you wanted to.

      • Anything is OK for first year really. My daughter successfully used her old school MBP 4years old) in first year, and time has come for an updated machine. A lot of work is server based anyway and you just log in and use and use that for the grunt work.
UQ from second year you need to be running Seimens NX for 3D CAD work (mechanical , aerospace engineering etc).
This will run on anything, but the Mac version is a shockingly bad port and frankly rubbish compared with the windows version. So of course people don’t use it on macs and seimens doesn’t prioritise the Mac version. which means you miss out on that performance option combined with graphics and long battery life.

Ideally, as much RAM as possible 16GB is Ok but 32GB is better, and then as many cores as you can get on the processor, and next thought is GPU performance, but then also need to think about weight and battery life. RAM and CPU cores and speed the most important.
So i7 p series and 32GB Ram would be the pick IMHO. But likely to be around $2500-$3500 for decent portability and battery life. Options my daughter is looking at are a higher spec Zenbook, Lenovo Thinkpad P series, HP zbook firefly, Dell XPS or more likely Dell Precision (if you can afford it).

And then there are delivery times….

    • First 2 semesters are just core subjects
Programming for Engineers ,Professional Engineering ,Thermodynamics ,Mathematical Foundations II
Intro to Electrical Systems , Statics and Materials, Calculus & Linear Algebra
but later on he wants to do aerospace engineering

  • oh so pretty i wish i have more spare $….

  • Newegg has the ASUS VivoBook S 14X OLED Laptop, 14.5" OLED Display 2.8K 16:10 120Hz HDR, Intel Evo Platform, Intel Core i7-12700H CPU, 12GB RAM, 512GB SSD for $1,284.28 . Has more power be better for 3d work. Also upgradeable.

    • Do you have a link for the above? cheers

      • https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/midnight-black-asus-vivo… There's $230 of shipping and duty fees because it's from USA, so not as good. 1 RAM and storage slot are upgradable, which is nice for a thin laptop

        • I think that price includes postage and duty

          • @ubcool: The grand total price for me is showing $1411 incl duty and postage, $1190 incl GST initial price.

            • @zachhambo: when I do it it says
              AUD$1,082.00
              Est. Duty & GST
              AUD$200.

              Total $1,282

              • @ubcool: You have to go to the 2nd tab for delivery and select the $130 option, the free delivery deal doesn't apply apparently.

                • @zachhambo: it seems to be working for me

                  • @ubcool: Ah, must be where I live. :) $130 extra is a bit rich just to go to regional areas

  • You’ll experience perfect visuals from the expansive 16:10 2.8K OLED HDR NanoEdge touchscreen, a color-accurate up to 550-nit screen that’s PANTONE® Validated and has a cinema-grade 100% DCI-P3 gamut.

    • +1

i just realised the JBHF has touchscreen all others people linked on comments are not

      • I would look for flip function and stylus support for engineering. Also not windows 11 pro. Apart from that this is close to perfect.

  • OLED evo, you say 🤔

  • These or surface laptop 4 anyone?
Use case - day to day browsing - should be able to do Citrix or similar wfh

    • +1

For full remoting WFH - most laptops should be decent unless somehow get an abomination of 4k resolution with a limited old gen integrated graphics cpu

Surface Laptop 4 has pen support

  • this or a metabox flo? (metabox has better specs, bar the oled screen)
