Probably unlikely that Carlos Alcaraz is still playing given his AO withdrawal.

Ridiculous to punish athletes due to a governments actions. You're asking them to bring massive heat on themselves by speaking out against their homeland. Most people don't want to put their neck on the line for political purposes.

          Why ?

Most pro-Ukraine efforts so far have just been money laundering scams.

The country is literally run by a dictator.

          • +7

@infinite: Any proof to back you up on both allegations?

            • +1

@arcticmonkey: Plenty, but how many people here are willing to be open minded.

Not saying Ukraine, it's people and it's government are bad, but it's not all above board and by the books, not by a long shot.

@ozbking: It is not fringe nor a conspiracy to claim that Ukraine is massively corrupt. Ukraine is ranked second most corrupt country in Europe, Russia being the most corrupt. Even supporters of war aid to Ukraine acknowledge there will be a lot of "leakage", just like in Iraq and Afghanistan.
                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_in_Ukraine#:~:text=….

Zelenski and his inner circle were revealed to have millions in secret bank accounts in the Pandora Papers.
                  https://www.occrp.org/en/the-pandora-papers/pandora-papers-r…

BTW, I support Ukraine, but I would like there to be stronger oversight of war aid.

                  • @rokufan: I agree Ukraine has a very high level of corruption. This has always been one major issue for Ukraine to try and get into the EU.

It still doesn’t justify the statement, “ Most pro-Ukraine efforts so far have just been money laundering scams.”

should we have banned American players too?

I loved the FU mouth covered sendoff for the Germans by the Qatar media.

Why does every western country have some compulsive behaviour where they need to come up with smartarse way to politicise sports. The usual brainwash in the western media is enough, dont dish it into sports as well. The athletes have trained for years to compete on the big stage. Shut your big mouths and just watch sport for the actual sport.

If they condemn Putin/Russia they immediately put all of their family and friends still in Russia at risk of retaliation. Putin has already said that the nation needs to be purged of the unpatriotic. I'm constantly amazed at people who demand athletes to publicly condemn their authoritarian countries haven't given this a thought.

In addition, 98-year-old Leonid Stanislavskyi from Ukraine’s Kharkiv region will arrive in Australia early next week as an honoured guest. He has laid down a challenge to fellow nonagenarian, 98-year-old Henry Young from Adelaide, and the two will take to Rod Laver Arena for the Battle of the Centurions.

Damn.. I want to watch two 98 year olds play

A local tennis club would have a group of 80-90 year olds playing a social game of mixed doubles every so often.. it was actually quite impressive and interesting, even if they weren't all that spritely.

I watched a bunch of 70 year olds play basketball, but instead of running, they were all walking. Was pretty funny, but also quite cool to see

  • I support this post!

    Most Serbs actually support Russia.

Nole I doubt is much different.

Better off just donating the 25 bucks and skipping the event. These charity/testimonial events in any sport are always pretty rubbish to watch.

Not all of them. The 2020 AO Bushfire Relief fundraising was pretty incredible - very well organised and we had a really good time.

Got to see many international stars for a fraction of the normal ticket price. Well worth the price I reckon if you're a tennis fan.

  • Seems like the decent seats are gone

This is advertising, not a bargain.

This isn't a deal, this is advertising.

      Agreed.

Love to go but with city circle train service out for while & buses replacing most trains services too lately I'm not going as coming from country Vic will be extra long time needed for journey before even getting to event that apparently only goes for two hours. Fingers crossed it's broadcast on TV.

    • FYI Flinders St and Southern Cross are unaffected so VLine services through the city should be fine. Can’t speak for bus replacements elsewhere though.

  • any ideas best places to park? The MPOT carpark is closed on that day.

  • Meanwhile the Australian Open have started charging for qualifying matches.

    • AO is too money hungry these days.

No wonder players earn $10s of millions
