This fast charger will charge the 4.0Ah battery from empty in 80 minutes, while the standard charger is double at 160 minutes.

OzBargainers should have a boxful of these by now :)

Maybe clearing out since the compact fast charger has been around a while, though I don't see them for separate sale on Bunnings site.

the $20 for 2.0a battery PLUS charger was the best value of the year

    • Boxful of slow chargers. They're price matching Aldi at the moment.

      • +2

slow chargers are better for battery longevity

        • Not sure about this but that's not true for phone chargers. People seem to think something like PD60W will charge at 60W constantly when that's not true.

          • @Clear:

but that's not true for phone chargers

            Yes it is .
At a minimum fast charging generates more heat which is bad for batteries and constant exposure to higher temperatures will degrade the battery faster.

@spaceflight: Except the newer protocols are smart enough not to cause overheating. Hence why they're not running at max wattage the whole time. Plus when they reach 80% or so they slow down anyway.

I never said it caused overheating.

I did say fast charging generates more heat which is bad for batteries and constant exposure to higher temperatures will degrade the battery faster.

Hence why they're not running at max wattage the whole time.

That's done because lithium batteries are more efficient at absorbing charge when they are flatter.
Once they hit 70-80% or so of capacity they are much less efficient at absorbing charge.

Plus when they reach 80% or so they slow down anyway.

                Yes.

          • @Clear: heat shortens battery life ….the faster you charge the hotter they get as you are trying to get more energy in in a shorter time ….. its why some cordless tools have air forced air by the charger that blows over the battery to cool it down during fast charge.

            • @garage sale: Even some wireless phone chargers have fans in them.

              • @spaceflight: Wireless chargers tend to generate significantly more heat than USB Power Delivery does. No wonder that'll degrade.

Wireless chargers tend to generate significantly more heat than USB Power Delivery does.

                  I know

                  No wonder that'll degrade.

Fast charging generates more heat which is bad for batteries and constant exposure to higher temperatures will degrade the battery faster.

                  That's wired or wireless charging.

            • @garage sale: Time to upgrade to a GaN

        • back in the day this was correct. this no longer applies with lithium batteries.

          • @Hugh G Rection:

back in the day this was correct

            And it's still correct today.

this no longer applies with lithium batteries.

So lithium batteries don't degrade with heat?

No need to answer incorrectly, I'll give you the correct answer

            Lithium batteries degrade with heat

            Want to read more?

increasing the operating temperature increases the degradation rates of all components in the LiB which include maximum charge storage capacity

@spaceflight: it is less susceptible to heat and cold unlike old batteries.

fast charging lithium doesn't degrade the battery.

i would only agree with you if you are fast charging in a hot car in summer with all the windows up.

fast charging at home will not degrade the battery any more then a slow charger you silly goose. lol

      • Plenty of those in the collection too :D
2 of these wall mounted in the garage, a bunch of the clip on slow chargers, and a few of the compact fast chargers more recently from various promo bundles (good to take camping)

      • The fast chargers (3A) were $20 with 2Ah battery, and in all the bundle deals.

The slow chargers (1.5A) were selling for $10 each. I gutted mine for parts :)

Was just thinking that. Surely OzB's would have a few of these already from buying discounted kits.

I have 3 spare fast chargers, 2 compact and 1 regular, all brand new. If you donate $10 to a secular charity and show me proof, I'll send you one for free

Its a Seinfeld reference, he may be entirely joking

        • +1

Sorry, was a classic Seinfeld reference attempting humour, like "yadda yadda yadda" . I guess getting a bit dated, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Thanks for your generosity, I'd take you up but have plenty.

    • @rosebank - list ‘em in the Classifieds forum as freebies. I’ve given away three so far for just the cost of postage.

      • Too much effort. Have to list, and give out my paypal or bank deetz, which I'd rather not. This way people can post a screeshot of the donation and pm me address
