MSI GP66 15.6" QHD 240Hz 100% P3 OLED, i7-12700H, 16GB DDR5, RTX3070Ti, 1TB SSD $2599 Delivered + Surcharge @ Computer Alliance

Hi folks, hope everyone had a good xmas, just spotted this deal, not exactly ideal given how soon CES2023 is, but given the lack of any good 3070/ti lappy deals in recent times, this is a good deal if you want a capable machine that can also do colour accurate work with the beautiful 100% DCI-P3 (macbook level) OLED screen while also a killer in games with best in class response times (timestamped).

Compared to earlier GP66 12th gen skus, this also gets updated with DDR5 for a small gain. Only caveat with the GP66 is that for an intel rig it doesnt come with thunderbolt, there is Type C w/ DP, mini DP, HDMI 2.1, RJ45 and 3 USB A ports so apart from TB its well rounded at least. Oh and a combination of Intel cpu & 65wh battery means the battery is a UPS more than anything in real practice, but again its a gaming laptop so hopefully not a big deal to the most of you guys.

The GP66 have 150w 3070ti and as far as performance goes, it edges out the Legion 5 Pro with MSI's gpu overboost tech, which is simply a way to bypass the dynamic boost wattage (25w for both machines) so it can attain near 150w at all times ignoring cpu load, something the Legion 5 Pro can't. Albeit there is now a hack that can bypass dynamic boost 2.0 for most machines, I will just take the liberty of posting it here in case any one want to try it:

  • Make sure your Game Ready driver is updated to 527.56

  • Open up device manager and under 'Software Devices' disable 'NVIDIA Platform Controllers and Framework

  • Open up MSI Afterburner, the power limit slider should be unlocked, just drag it as far as you can, ignore whatever value it is and you are done, if your machine can handle it you should get your peak (so base + dynamic boost wattage) gpu wattage at all times no matter what power draw the cpu is at

Last note, same price for this machine avalible at Mwave, MSY, Umart if you are avalible for free C&C, otherwise Computer Alliance is (as far as I can see) the only store offering free delivery. If you have eBay Plus and can use the PLUSDEC1 for 5% off (potentially more with gift cards), you can get it for $2,526.05 delivered off Wireless1 eBay.

  • Waiting for CES2023.

    • Aren’t we all 🤧 Just worried about oz pricing for the new machines and if we can get any damn stock this year - so many SKUs from Lenovo, Asus and basically all the big guys apart from Dell are missing down here. Speaking of Dell they actually increased the sale price for the new G15 by like 300$ on the last two 20% Dell eBay sales which makes me wonder if there is a stock problem affecting all brands this year?

      • Could it do with chip shortages? Or has that been sorted out and supply is returning to the market?

        • +1

I dont really know, there just seems to be stock problems for the aussie market, say the legion 5 pro deals from US ebay? They have literally no shortage of 3060 & 3070/ti legion deals over there, we barely get any legion stocks-the ones we have are laughable 3050/ti ones. 2022 Acer Helios 300 & Nitro 5 with full powered 3060 are practically everywhere but here, TUFs with the 100% p3 QHD screen? Well we get a shoddy 144hz 62.5% srgb sku and have to pay extra $ with the oz tax. Its just we seem to get much less options nowadays which is really weird because while I understand we are not a big market considering how much people there are down here but it wasnt the case before.

          • +1

@Brrrrt: I think it's probably got more to do with the poor Aussie dollar. Less value for companies to sell here and retailers have had to raise prices in response. Double or triple whammy with Covid and chip shortages. And off course you have the oztax, where we get the reject cut down parts/laptops at extra cost.

            • @GardenGnome: Ah that certainly sounds like it :/ reckon aud can climb up a bit in time for the new gen laptop drops?

              • +1

@Brrrrt: Economic outlook is very uncertain. If Australia avoids a recession, then most likely it will rise to 75 or even low 80's if Europe and Usa go into recession. If the US and Europe go into recession and Australia follows it might drop even further. Australia could just scrape by with 1, 1.5% growth next year and that would be a major achievement.

                • +1

@GardenGnome: Yikes aint that no good. Heres hoping for the best then, thanks for educating this dumbass who dont know next to nothing about economics.

  • Isn't oled on a laptop a bad idea? It would be displaying hours and hours of static elements daily.

    • +1

I dont have personal experience with it, but reviews on this and the GE67HX are both very good, I might attribute it to these newer oled displays having anti burn-in tech built into them-for example I heard they undergo tiny winy constant, automatic pixel changes to prevent burn-ins. I am not a screen expert, so certainly dont quote me on that.

    • I've had OLED in my laptops since 2018. there are several simple steps to give yourself a peace of mind:

      • pitch black wallpaper (but have a nice colourful lock screen)
      • auto hide task bar
      • remove/hide all desktop icons
      • set the screen to turn off after 3 min of inactivity

      done!

also, recent OLED equipped machines usually come with protection built in

  • Hoooooold

  • Good price. Not really sure what laptop to go for if I want it to be portable. This with 2.3 kg is a bit heavy for that.

Need something that is easy to carry overseas for some casual dota/mmo games. Would love any recommendations.

    • Its not the greatest and its from gerrys, but this zephyrus g14 with 6800HS and RX6700S is the best my quick search netted me that should give you a decent gaming performance with battery life and portability in mind at the same price.

      • I was eyeing the Razer Blade 14 as well. Could try and price match it for $2999 at JB.
Atm confused between RB14, RB15 and Asus G14.
Watched all the vids from Jarrods Tech and now I'm more undecided.

        • I am also eyeing the razer blade 14 and it is cheaper at officeworks. But you might be looking at a higher spec version.

Actually tossing up getting the OW razer 14 or this laptop. Both similar prices but trading portability for speed.

          • @serpserpserp: The one at OW is with 3060. The 3070Ti is on sale till 31st for $2999 at a few stores, and is much better value.

            • @ar7ist: $400 more tho. What else is different except GPU?

              • @serpserpserp: I ended up getting the RB15 3070Ti QHD 240 Hz.
Was able to price match it with Amazon down to $3161. I went for RB15 instead of the 14 purely because of RB14 not having any upgradeability. Plus it doesnt have TB4 ports as its AMD.

                • @ar7ist: Nice one! I ended up with the RB14. I was upgrading from a 8 year old XPS13. So the size and weight is pretty similar but everything else is a billion times better. Outputting to monitors or the OLED TV is great too. Such great machines.

                  • @serpserpserp: Sweet. Do you have a multiple external monitor setup?
I'm deciding if its worth getting the Razer Laptop Stand Chroma V2

                    • @ar7ist: Nar I just have an ultra wide and a LG OLED. Although now I am thinking about upgrading to a gaming ultra wide now

  • with CES just around the corner these should be priced in a more convincing way (looking at CPU and GPU)

however look at the screen! I say this is awesome value, and what Gigabyte Aero should have been: ultimate gaming and image/video processing machine

    also, per key RGB! sold

if I didn't decide it's time to abandon gaming laptop territory, I would have got one

    • Why abandon gaming laptop?

Im considering a move from desktop to gaming laptop setup which I can use on the move.

      • I changed around 15 gaming laptops since covid started. razers, Legion, gigabyte, Dell, HP Omen, Acer etc. during covid it was easier to get a gaming laptop than build a performing desktop due to shortage of GPUs and prices

I made an executive decision that I don't want to listen to helicopter noise of cooling system anymore, and want longer battery life. sold my L5P with 3070Ti and got an Xbox Series X and a good TV. I don't know how they do it, my favourite games look just as good and smooth, and there's no cooling noise

when I crave to game on the go, I have a laptop with Intel Xe card and 90hz OLED panel, perfect to run old optimized games if I so wish

also there's Xbox cloud gaming, and lag has been tolerable. I can play remotely a lot of super cool games, no gaming card required

  • I bought this from centrecom at the same price on Xmas eve. Comes with a free backpack thats already in the box. As far as i know this is a MSI promotion so all other stores selling these laptops should come with the backpack in the box.

  • Thanks for the "dynamic boost" trick! Works like a charm

    • Nice! Just for interests sake, may I know your model? It seems like this hack doesnt work for all machines.

  • I need a gaming laptop by late Feb, does CES in early Jan bring some sales or a trickle down effect in the following weeks?

Just weighing up if I jump on something like this or hold out to see what deals might pop up in the next 1-2 months.

$2k-2.5k is my range and full powered 3060ti or better (don't need the newest or greatest). Will be adding another 2tb ssd. Will mostly be setup at table/desk back in my accommodation as I am travelling most of 2023 (so will be replacing my desktop and Xbox series X).

Quality screen and keyboard are musts as I won't be taking externals (except mouse). Might connect to TVs to play movies though.

Any thoughts are appreciated (the more reviews I read/watch the more overwhelmed I get!).

    • +1

Not in the immediate weeks Im afraid, as stocks wont be coming in until late feb/early March at the earliest if if its the same as previous years and current pricings for last gen machines wont see an immediate dip. Sales will come and go of course.

  • Anyone who owns one of these already. What is the decibels like when the laptop is kicking into top performance?

    • +1

As per jarrods review timestamped here, 53.6db at extreme mode on auto fan speeds, and if you turn the slider all the way up its 58.5 db. Loud but on par for the course for a gaming laptop, the ozb favourite Legion 5 pro also gets ~53 db on performance mode (the highest setting in lenovo vantage software) per jarrod, and it doesnt get a max fan speed db measaurement because lenovo dont support custom fan control out of the box.

      • Yeah just wondering how it sounds to people. If it is overly distracting maybe not a lot of fun for peeps

  • @Brrrrt. Good find. A little correction the GPU mem. is mentioned as 6 Gigs.
Just wished it was a 17 inch (could compromise on the screen being non-oled). The 17 inch variant on their website (the top spec'd one) is too much out of my budget and also out of stock.
Do you have some good option in your knowledge? budget is +/- 2500$ for 3070 GPU based.

    • Ah the typo blame MSI again I straight up copied it from their site. Will have a look later as Im outside rn. Anything decent 17’ with a 3070 would do right?

      • Yes.
Not much brand conscious unless it's decent build quality and not extra bezels.

        • Hi mate, think I found what you are looking for, look up these two models:

          • Infinity M7-11R7N

          • Infinity M7-5R9R7N

The former is the intel 11800H +512gb storage option at 2299$ across retailers, the second is the ryzen 5900HX +1tb option at 2399$ across a few stores. They are otherwise identical at 17.3' packing a 1440p165hz panel, with full powered 140w 3070 with mux switch. This is a chinese tongfang chasis and like Clevo is used by many small brands across the world. They should be relatively solid built and have decent QC as its put together in small batches here in oz.

I personally dont feel the extra 100$ is worth it, I dont think battery life matters to you, given you are looking at a 17' rig. That out of the way, the 11800H goes head to toe with the 5900HX, and have better 1% lows due to larger L3 cache (24mb vs 16mb). Intel typically scales better on wall power & past 40w or so, which this solid 17' rig is easily capable of sustaining. Storage upgrades can be had later for cheaper and certainly the 512gb isnt that big of a issue, to me personally at least.

          • @Brrrrt: Trust me, while on a search online myself I found this on a retailer or two but didn't consider it due to its TV like appearance of its panel. I really really appreciate you did the effort but I'll be looking at this screen which I am not liking so…..
This would be the desktop replacement system for me and personal/entertainment use . I do have a Dell Precision for my official work.

            • @nasir55: Man you got me beaten here, I really dont think there is any good laptop that fits your description, best I can do is the GP66 and you get an monitor to go, if thats an option? All the other 17' 3070 deals around the 2.5k mark (and ive upped it to 2.8k) nets me crap and as you said the GP76 is OOS everywhere.

              • @Brrrrt: That 2.5k wasn't the dead end (hence the +/- thing), the orange mark you can say with further 100 or 200 as the the Red mark.

I am thinking to not spend this much and get a lower spec until the 4000 series comes in full-bloom. And rather get a lower tier like:
                https://www.umart.com.au/product/gigabyte-g7-ke-17-3in-fhd-1…

Didn't find the 11th gen available with a 3060. Otherwise have saved the money further :)

Waiting for the 40 gen is an option but these gigabyte ones have real shoddy build quality, thats a 2 year old clevo chasis you are looking at here and the 11th gen sku uses a 4 year old clevo chasis which I really dont think belongs in 2022. The price is not bad but I really would just go for a better built 15' at this price if I have to be honest.

I have already took the liberty of increasing the 2.5k to 2.7/2.8k but still nothing good at this price range I can recommend. Theres the tufs which is the only one with a mux switch and full powered gpu but that have a dogshite screen. low end gf/gl msi are no go and other gigabyte aorus models just arent worth their price esp when they are not on sale.

      • +1

Tried to find a review for that G7 but didn't find anywhere. Today I just did an overall search for vector GP76 and found it on wireless1 and got excited for like a couple of seconds until i saw the OOS status :) Still checking further. BTW any chances of finding it on the physical stores? Really want to pull the trigger within this year on one (as don't want to use the official machine for personal use).
Thanks a lot for all the help @brrrrt

        • You might, say maybe they will have like a display unit or something, would hurt to try haha.

  • I'm personally waiting for news on the upcoming laptops from CES but this looks like a decent deal given that I haven't looked at reviews for this. It would definitely be one pretty screen.

  • Pulled the trigger because I can't wait for a better deal anymore (been since August for me and I am desperate now to get some gaming in before my first born arrives mid year). My thinking is that if we didn't see any amazing deals for black friday or boxing day than this is the one. CES in a few days but I don't think we will see many deals for a couple of months due to supply and I need to replace my dodgy old laptop.

I have been waiting for a Legion 5i Pro deal and hadn't really thought about GP66 till I saw it on MWave. This screen on the GP66 has sold me though. This has great reviews performance wise online so can't wait. No thunderbolt charging but won't bother me. Thanks Brrrrt.
