Can I live in one of these

Customise with ensuite bathroom using https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/746809 and you can

    • In the USA they actually make "shed cities" for the homeless using this brand.

  • hmmmmm…plastic shed,wouldn't get hot would it?

    • Like all sheds in summer, they get hot. These have more insulation than a metal shed though plus in winter you dont have condensation issues on the roof.

    • For a while would leech VOC's, so inside the 'shed' with no ventilation I'm betting (but happy to be corrected) it'd be considered dangerous with the concentration of chemicals such as HCHO as they're unable to vent sufficiently.

These sheds are ventilated and you are totally incorrect, there is no dangerous concentration of chemicals.

        • So HDPE doesn't leach VOC's for a certain amount of time after manufacture?

  • What plastic is it?
Couldn't find any details on the material, they're ability to withstand dye bleaching with UV etc.

    • Hi, the product description for each shed contains a full writeup on the type of plastic used. Its fully UV resistant and very strong.
      Pasted below:

HDPE: Environmentally aware, Lifetime’s manufacturing process embraces recyclable High Density Polyethylene, using a resin that can be re-formed into alternative products when the time comes to replace.
Revolutionary, HDPE, an innovative polyethylene plastic that incorporates strengtheners to fortify the composition against cracking during winter’s freezing conditions with a UV stabilisation to defend against the heat of the suns rays fracturing & bleaching the surface.

Robustly designed to prevent dents appearing, the construction is formed by combining two walls or skins. The inner side comprises an arrangement of resin ridges to provide substantial bracing with the outer skin meanwhile giving the simulation of a wood paneled building embossed with ornate wood-grain details radiating a desert-sand tinge and is crafted by state-of-the-art blow molding procedures.
Each wall panel interlinks with adjoining panels and locks into the floor then abutting underneath the roof structure to eliminate rainwater leaks at the wall-roof connection. High grade steel screws secure the panels to the shed’s steel framework resulting in a sturdy overall construction.

High Density Polyethylene is impermeable to damp, icy conditions, rainfall and the effect of the sun. Unaffected by rot, this imperishable resin eliminates maintenance, it’s not designed for painting nor varnishing. Cleaning merely involves undertaking the odd wash, a pressure blaster makes short work of the job.

Good, well better than the cheap PVC some companies were selling.

Be aware (consumers) some people may not be able to have these plastic sheds in bushfire zones because of the toxins migrating from hdpe as it reaches melting point.

Have you measured the VOC's inside a new shed in normal ambient (now summer) temps? At what point in time is it safe for a human to spend a reasonable amount of time inside one of these enclosures?

        • +1

Im not sure what you mean by "At what point in time" but as we mentioned earlier, these are used int he USA as homeless shelters. The meet California requirements in that regard, people live in them. In Australia we use them as Garden Sheds only though….

          • @Landera: Plastic leaches VOC's for a while, when you have a certain amount of it in an enclosed space it's considered harmful.

There's information on what types and what levels of VOC's are deemed safe.

I'm not against your product, I just think more info could be good to help reduce confusion surrounding safety.

            • @[Deactivated]: This is a garden shed which is likely to house plastic garden appliances, fuels, pool chemicals and the like. So The off gassing from the shed will probably be the least harmful component of any gases inside. VOCs are a concern in places used for habitation. Of course, if you’re living in this shed I think you might have more immediately pressing issues that those posed by the VOCs. Seems to me you’re makinga big issue out of a completely moot point.

              • @roller: Some people like to work on sheds, use them as man caves and like to know if being in there is the equivalent to smoking.

  • Very tempting as I need to replace a rusty one soon. Just don't know if shipping is going to be the killer.

I have a few friends with Costco plastic sheds, and they rave about them over metal ones.
